2 Palm Sunday WORSHIP - March 29, :30 A.M. WORDS OF WELCOME F. James Stayton VOLUNTARY / PROCESSION OF PALMS I. Allegro: Concerto for Two Violins and Orchestra, RV 522 Antonio Vivaldi Benjamin Thacher and Benjamin Hart, violin soloists INVITATION TO DISCIPLESHIP At this time please pass the friendship pad, the purpose of which is to know and greet others on your pew. You may also complete a prayer request card (in the pew rack) and place it in the offering plate. The pastoral and program staff will include your request in its weekly time of prayer. Anyone interested in joining the church is encouraged to speak to one of the pastors following the service. After the children's palm procession, children will proceed back to the narthex. Students 1st grade and younger will go from the narthex to extended session on the playground. Students 2nd grade and older will return to their seats with their parents. *CALL TO WORSHIP, (responsive) from Psalm 118: 26, 27, 29 Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. We bless you from the house of the Lord Bind the festal processions with branches, up to the horns of the altar. O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever. *HYMN (all) "Hosanna, Loud Hosanna" ellacombe 1) Hosanna, loud hosanna, the little children sang; through pillared court and temple the joyful anthem rang. To Jesus, who had blessed them, close folded to his breast, the children sang their praises, the simplest and the best. 2) From Olivet they followed 'mid an exultant crowd, the victor palm branch waving, and chanting clear and loud; the Lord of earth and heaven rode on in lowly state, nor scorned that little children should on his bidding wait. 3) "Hosanna in the highest!" That ancient song we sang, for Christ is our Redeemer; the Lord of heaven, our King. O may we ever praise him with heart and life and voice, and in his blissful presence eternally rejoice. SCRIPTURE READING Matthew 21:1-11 MEDITATION F. James Stayton Requiem - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ( ) I - Introitus - Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis. Te decet hymnus, Deus, in Sion, et tibi reddetur votum in Jerusalem. Exaudi orationem meam, ad te omnis caro veniet. Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis. Grant them eternal rest, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine on them. Thou, O God, art praised in Sion, and unto Thee shall the vow be performed in Jerusalem. Hear my prayer, unto Thee shall all flesh come. Grant them eternal rest, 0 Lord, and may perpetual light shine on them. JeAnne Swinley, soprano II - Kyrie - Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison. Lord have mercy upon us. Christ have mercy upon us. Lord have mercy upon us. III - Sequentia (1) - Dies irae, dies illa solvet saeclum in favilla, teste David cum Sibylla. Quantus tremor est futurus quando judex est venturus cuncta stricte discussurus. Day of wrath, that day will dissolve the earth in ashes as David and the Sibyl bear witness. What dread there will be, when the Judge shall come to judge all things strictly.

A trumpet, spreading a wondrous sound through the graves of all lands, will drive mankind before the throne. Death and Nature shall be astonished when all creation rises again to answer to the Judge. A book, written in, will be brought forth in which is contained everything that is, out of which the world shall be judged. When therefore the Judge takes His seat whatever is hidden will reveal itself. Nothing will remain unavenged. What then shall 1 say, wretch that I am? What advocate entreats to speak for me, when even the righteous may hardly be secure? JeAnne Swinley, soprano; Margaret Crain, mezzo-soprano; Tyler Smith, tenor; Taylor Miller, baritone (3) Rex tremendae majestatis, qui salvandos salvas gratis, salve me, fons pietatis. King of awful majesty, who freely savest the redeemed, save me, O fount of goodness. (4) Recordare, Jesu pie, quod sum causa tuae viae: ne me perdas ilia die. Quaerens me sedisti lassus: redemisti Crucem passus, tamus labor non sit cassus. Juste judex ultionis donum fac remissionis ante diem rationis. lngemisco tamquam reus: culpa rubet vultus meus: supplicanti parce, Deus. Remember, blessed Jesu, that I am the cause of Thy pilgrimage: Do not forsake me on that day. Seeking me Thou didst sit down weary, thou didst redeem me, suffering death on the cross. Let not such toil be in vain. Just and avenging Judge, grant remission before the day of reckoning. I groan like a guilty man. Guilt reddens my face. Spare a suppliant, O God. Thou who didst absolve Mary Magdalene and didst hearken to the thief, to me also hast Thou given hope. My prayers are not worthy, but Thou in Thy merciful goodness grant that I burn not in everlasting fire. Place me among Thy sheep and separate me from the goats, setting me on Thy right hand. Betsy Uschkrat, soprano; Margaret Crain, mezzo-soprano; Kameron Lopreore, tenor; Taylor Miller, baritone (5) Confutatis maledictis flammis acribus addictis: voca me cum benedictis. Oro supplex et acclinis, cor contritum quasi cinis: gere curam mei finis. When the accursed have been confounded and given over to the bitter flames, call me with the blessed. I pray in supplication on my knees. My heart contrite as the dust, safeguard my fate. (6) Lacrimosa dies illa qua resurget ex favilla judicandus homo reus. Huic ergo parce, Deus: Pie Jesu Domine, Dona eis requiem. Amen. Mournful that day when from the dust shall rise guilty man to be judged. Therefore spare him, O God. Merciful Jesu, Lord Grant them rest. Amen. IV - Offertorium (1) - Domine, Jesu Christe, Rex gloriae, libera animas omnium fidelium defunctorum de poenis inferni, et de profundo lacu: libera eas de ore leonis, ne absorbeat eas tartarus, ne cadant in obscurum: sed signifer sanctus Michael repraesentet eas in lucem sanctam, quam olim Abrahae promisisti et semini ejus. Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory, deliver the souls of all the faithful departed from the pains of hell and from the bottomless pit. Deliver them from the lion's mouth. Neither let them fall into darkness nor the black abyss swallow them up. And let St. Michael, Thy standard-bearer, lead them into the holy light which once Thou didst promise to Abraham and his seed. Betsy Uschkrat, soprano; Margaret Crain, mezzo-soprano; Kameron Lopreore, tenor; Taylor Miller, baritone (2) - Hostias et preces, tibi, Domine, laudis offerimus: tu suscipe pro animabus illis, quarum hodie memoriam facimus: fac eas, Domine, de morte transire ad vitam, quam olim Abrahae promisisti et semini ejus. We offer unto Thee this sacrifice of prayer and praise. Receive it for those souls whom today we commemorate. Allow them, O Lord, to cross from death into the life which once Thou didst promise to Abraham and his seed. V - Sanctus - Sanctus. Sanctus, Sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth! Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. Osanna in excelsis.

4 Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Sabaoth. Heaven and earth are full of Thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. VI - Benedictus - Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Osanna in excelsis. Blessed is He who cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Betsy Uschkrat, soprano; Margaret Crain, mezzo-soprano; Tyler Smith, tenor; Taylor Miller, baritone VII - Agnus Dei - Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona eis requiem. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona eis requiem sempiternam. Lamb of God, who takest away the sins of the world, grant them rest. Lamb of God, who takest away the sins of the world, grant them everlasting rest. VIII - Communio - Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine, cum sanctis tuis in aeternum, quia pius es. Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis. Cum sanctis tuis in aeternum, quia pius es. May eternal light shine on them, O Lord, With Thy saints for ever, because Thou art merciful. Grant the dead eternal rest, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine on them, with Thy saints for ever, because Thou are merciful. JeAnne Swinley, soprano THE OFFERING II. Larghetto e spirituoso: Concerto for Two Violins and Orchestra, RV 522 Vivaldi *HYMN (all) "Jesus, Lover of My Soul" aberystwyth 1) Jesus, lover of my soul, let me to thy bosom fly, while the nearer waters roll, while the tempest still is high. Hide me, O my Savior, hide, till the storm of life is past. Safe into they haven guide. O receive my soul at last! 2) Other refuge have I none; hangs my helpless soul on thee. Leave, ah! leave me not alone; still support and comfort me. All my trust on thee is stayed; all my help from thee I bring. Cover my defenseless head with the shadow of thy wing. 3) Thou, O Christ, art all I want; more than all in thee I find. Raise the fallen, cheer the faint, heal the sick, and lead the blind. Just and holy is thy name; I am all unrighteousness. False and full of sin I am; thou art full of truth and grace. 4) Plenteous grace with thee is found, grace to cover all my sin. Let the healing streams abound; make and keep me pure within. Thou of life the fountain art; freely let me take of thee. Spring thou up within my heart. Rise to all eternity. BENEDICTION VOLUNTARY (congregation seated) III. 5 Holy Week Join us this Holy Week, as we participate in the Passion of Jesus Christ, and reflect on God's generous love and plan of salvation. Holy Week is a marvelous opportunity for Christian growth. It offers incredible potential for satisfying spiritual hunger. It does this by exposing those who attend its services to God's Word and Sacrament. In other words, we grow in Holy Week not by imitating Christ's last days. We grow as the Holy Spirit works through the Gospel and Sacrament that we hear and receive during these days. This Holy Week, taste and see that the Lord is good! Palm/Passion Sunday (Communion Service, 8:30 a.m.; Musical Program of Worship, 10:30 a.m.) Palm Sunday is the commemoration of our Lord's triumphant entry into Jerusalem five days before His crucifixion. This day takes its name from the fact that as Jesus approached Jerusalem on a donkey (in fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9), the huge crowd that followed carried palm branches as they praised Him. The people hailed Him as the long awaited "Son of David," that is, the Messiah. Maundy Thursday (Worship at 7:30 p.m., Sanctuary) On Thursday of Holy Week we remember Jesus Last Supper when at the Passover celebration he broke bread and gave the cup to his disciples, initiating the Sacrament of the Lord s Supper or Holy Communion (Luke 22:7-38). The Gospel of John (13:1-17) tells of Jesus washing the disciples feet and giving them a new commandment, to love each other as Christ had loved them. The name Maundy Thursday is from the Latin word for commandment, 'mandatium.' Following the Lord s Supper or Communion on Holy Thursday, we enact a stripping of the church, in which Jesus sufferings are recalled through the words of Psalm 22, candles are extinguished and all banners are removed, one by one until the room is dark and the service concludes. Worshippers quietly leave the church and gather again, as the service continues on Good Friday. Good Friday (Worship at Noon, Sanctuary) We remember the crucifixion of Jesus, as our worship continues. The name Good Friday may be a derivation of what was originally called God s Friday, because Jesus death shows God s love and salvation offered to all people. The name Good Friday reminds us of our hope that God is present even in the midst of tragedy. Not even death can overshadow the love of God. Easter Sunday (Worship Services, 8:30 & 10:30 a.m. Identical Services - We encourage members to attend the 8:30 Easter service in the Sanctuary, so that the 10:30 will not be so overcrowded and visitors can worship comfortably. All aspects of the services will be the same.) The earliest word for the annual celebration of Christ's resurrection was probably Pascha. Easter was not always celebrated on Sunday, but by the time of the Council of Nicea in 325, it was decided that Easter would occur on the Sunday following the first full moon after the spring equinox, which occurs between March 22 and April 25. Easter celebrates Christ's victory over sin, death, and the devil, as well as the promise of our justification and everlasting life. SCAPC's Mission Statement We at St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church are called by God s grace to be a community of faith in Jesus Christ, supporting one another in love, and trusting in the transformative power of the Holy Spirit to enable us to bring hope and healing to a broken world.

For anyone wondering if the Christian faith is still relevant in a postmodern culture. For anyone thirsting for a genuine encounter with a God who is real. For anyone yearning for a renewed sense of passion in life. Blue Like Jazz is a fresh and original perspective on life, love, and redemption. Books provided. Led by Stephanie Haniford 3rd Floor Youth Room Feasting on the Word Join us each week for a deeper exploration of the biblical texts of that day s service. Our understanding of the Scriptures, read and proclaimed in worship, will be reinforced and expanded during this discussion. Led by: Michael O Keefe, Bob Smith, and Amy Morriss Land Building, Riverside Archaeology of Easter We see representations of both the Crucifixion and the Resurrection in art throughout the Christian era, but a lot of our understanding is based on modern, Western analogies for capital punishment, death, and burial. The class will explore some background information that can help us understand the context of Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection in 1st Century Levant. Through this context, we will develop a richer understanding of the Crucifixion and the Resurrection, and how they offer Christians a starting point for the new covenant. Led by: Crorey Lawton Sundays, through April 5 Library Why does God Let Bad Things Happen to Good People? This class will examine the perennial question of suffering and why God allows it. For atheists, suffering proves that God does not exist, but Christianity provides an answer. Geoff Snodgrass will lead the class and moderate discussion based on C.S. Lewis' The Problem of Pain. Led by: Geoff Snodgrass Sundays, through April 12 Land Building Lakeside
