4 Triduum Schedule 2017 Join us as we celebrate our Three Most Sacred Days The Easter liturgy is the high-point of the entire liturgical year and the reason for our joy as Christians. The Sacred Triduum reflects the fact that the joy of Easter came about through Jesus suffering and death. The Mass of the Lord s Supper on Holy Thursday sets the context for the Triduum. Jesus Passover begins in love: the love he has for his disciples as well as the love he has for the Father. By celebrating these three days, the Church offers us the big picture in which the suffering, death and resurrection of Christ are not isolated from one another, but form one continuous act of love for us. Holy Thursday - April 13th 7:40 a.m. Morning Prayer 8:15 a.m. Rosary No Morning Mass 7:00 p.m. - Mass of the Lord s Supper 8:30 p.m. Night Prayer Because this is a special night you are asked to leave in silence as many will wish to remain and pray. The Blessed Sacrament will be reserved in the Altar of Repose located in the St. Augustine Room. Bring Your Bells! On Holy Thursday for the singing of the Gloria, all children and adults alike are invited to bring bells and ring them joyously! As the Triduum begins with the Mass of the Lord s Supper, Jesus shows us the meaning of loving service. The symbol of washing the disciples feet is following by real self-giving, first in the Eucharist, then on the Cross. This mass also celebrated the Gifts of the Priesthood and the Eucharist. Good Friday - April 14th 8:00 a.m. Rosary 8:15 a.m. Office of Readings & Morning Prayer 9:00 a.m. Divine Mercy Novena 3:00 p.m. Good Friday Solemn Service Paschal Fast - The church fasts to honour the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare to share more deeply in the joy of his resurrection. Good Friday is a universal day of fasting and abstinence from meat. Holy Saturday - April 15th 8:00 a.m. Rosary 8:30 a.m. Office of Readings & Morning Prayer 9:00 a.m. Divine Mercy Novena 10:30 a.m. Blessing of Easter Baskets 8:00 p.m. Easter Vigil Mass Collection for the Holy Land The Good Friday Collection has traditionally been taken up in our Diocese for the support and maintenance of the Holy Places of Jerusalem under the care of the Franciscans. The Canadian Commissariat of the Holy Land, along with those in other countries, is responsible for a number of good works, including the upkeep of the Holy Sites and the formation of future priests. Lighting of the Easter fire, Procession with the Paschal Candle to the Church for the Solemn Easter Vigil. The first Mass of Easter. The church gathers in the darkness and lights a new fire and a great candle that will make this night bright for us. We listen to scripture, then we pray to all our saints to stand with us. We renew our baptismal promises. For us these are the moments when death and life meet, when we reject evil and give our promises to God. So together we go to the table and celebrate the Easter Eucharist. Easter day begins and we are ready for 50 days of rejoicing.

5 Easter Sunday, April 16th 7:40 a.m. Morning Prayer 8:00 a.m. Divine Mercy Novena 8:30 a.m. Easter Sunday Mass 10:30 a.m. Easter Sunday Mass There will be an Easter Egg Hunt for the children of the parish following the 10:30 a.m. Mass. Resurrection from the Dead Jesus was raised to new life in a glorified body. When Christians become suddenly aware of God s action in their lives, a strengthening of purpose, a renewed sense of hope, they experience a taste of the Resurrection. Perhaps it comes in the form of health after a long illness, the return of joy after a period of mourning or the ability to trust again after failure. Such new life is part of the Paschal Mystery and well worth celebrating throughout the 50 days of the Easter Season. 4:15 p.m. Easter Mass on Hornby Island Divine Mercy Novena Jesus asked St. Faustina that this Feast of the Divine Mercy be proceeded by a Novena to the Divine Mercy which would begin on Good Friday. He gave St. Faustina an intention to pray for on each day of the Novena, saving for the last day the most difficult intention of all, the lukewarm and indifferent of whom He said: These souls cause Me more suffering than any others; it was from such souls that My soul felt the most revulsion in the Garden of Olives. It was on their account that I said: My Father, if it possible, let this cup pass Me by. The last hope of salvation for them is to flee to My Mercy. In her diary, St. Faustina wrote that Jesus told her: On each day of the Novena you will bring to My heart a different group of souls and you will immerse them in this ocean of My mercy...on each day you will beg My Father, on the strength of My passion, for the graces for these souls. The Divine Mercy Novena will continue to be prayed throughout the upcoming week: April 17-21, Monday to Friday at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 22nd at 9:00 a.m. Divine Mercy Sunday, April 23rd at 3 p.m. Why do we cover the Statues? You may notice purple cloths draped over crucifixes, statues, and images of saints in church this weekend. The veiling of crosses and images is a sort of fasting from sacred depictions which represent the paschal glory of our salvation. Just as the Lenten fast concludes with the Paschal feast, so too, our fasting from the cross culminates in an adoration of the holy wood on which the sacrifice of Calvary was offered for our sins. Likewise, a fasting from the glorious images of the mysteries of fatih and the saints in glory, culminates on the Easter night with a renewed appreciation of the glorious victory won by Christ, risen from the tomb to win for us eternal life. The tradition is often practiced during the last two weeks before Easter, starting on the 5th Sunday (the Sunday prior to Palm Sunday) called Passiontide. Even though it is no longer called by this name as often, the tradition is still practiced in many places. Then, as in a dramatic unveiling, the images are again revealed to mark the end of the penitential season and the beginning of the joy of the Easter season and the hope that the Resurrection brings. It is a beautiful custom that teaches us about the meaning of the liturgical seasons.
