2 EPISTLE READING Reading from St. Paul s Letter to the Philippians 4:4-9 Brethren, Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let all men know your forbearance. The Lord is at hand. Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, do; and the God of peace will be with you. GOSPEL READING Reading is from St. John 12:1-18 Let us attend, Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 THE THEOTOKIAN There they made him a supper; Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at the table with him. Mary took a pound of costly ointment of pure nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was to betray him), said Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor? This he said, not that he cared for the poor but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box he used to take what was put into it. Jesus said, Let her alone, let her keep it for the day of my burial. The poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me. When the great crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, they came, not only on account of Jesus but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. So the chief priests planned to put Lazarus also to death, because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus. The next day a great crowd who had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying, Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel! And Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it; as it is written, Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey s colt! His disciples did not understand this at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that this had been written of him and had been done to him. The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead bore witness. The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign.

4 REMEMBERING DEATH As for man, his days are like grass; as a flower of the field, so he flourishes. For the wind passes over it, and it shall not be, and it shall know its place no more. But the mercy of the Lord is from generation to generation on those who fear him ) (Ps 102: 15-17a, LXX) To remember that you will die (memento mori) has been considered a healthy sort of reflection, since ancient times. It s not a morbid thought, in light of the New Life we look toward, in Christ. But it s also both liberating and sobering for our here and now, as the reality of death helps us to cherish/prioritize what really matters to us, at the end of the day, and to take a step back from unnecessary concerns and battles, if we ve become entangled in them. Let me take some time to re-focus today, and hand things over to God, in gratitude and humility, because He knows the day and the hour of each of us. As the final part of Lent draws near, I say Thank You, God, for relieving us of unnecessary entanglements, by Your grace. My soul, arise! Why are you sleeping? The end is drawing near, and you will be confounded. Awake, then, and, be watchful, that Christ our God may spare you, Who is everywhere present and fills all things. (Kontakion- Hymn, Great Canon of St. Andrew) HOW WE SPEAK A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. (Prov 15:1) Does this verse mean I should lie, rather than tell the truth, when the truthful answer might disagree with my interlocutor? No, that s not what Holy Wisdom tells us in this passage. He is talking, rather, of how we speak, rather than of what we say. As the very-next verse of Proverbs says, The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly, but the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness. (Prov 15:2) So if we re to be wise with His Wisdom, our tongue is to use knowledge rightly. rather than pour forth foolishness. This is very hard, as most of us will know. But with God, all things are possible! So let me be reminded today, insofar as I have any knowledge, the Source of which is God, to use it rightly, seasoning it with the salt of His grace, in a soft answer, in indeed I am called to answer anyone who is tempting me to pour forth foolishness. Lord and Master of my life, grant me not the spirt of idleness, despondency, love of power, and idle talk! 4

6 LAZARUS SATURDAY Today we celebrate Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. Jesus came to Bethany and raised up Lazarus un-embalmed corpse which had been deteriorating already for four days. The dead man s sisters, Martha and Mary, witnessed it. You will remember that Jesus was a friend of Lazarus and his sisters. A previous visit to their home (Luke 10:38-42 and 11:27-28) turned into a unique encounter. Mary sat and listened to the Lord s advice. On the other hand Martha was busy with hospitality. Martha was a worry-wort! At one point, Jesus stopped talking with Mary and went right into the kitchen! Verse 41 quotes Jesus exactly: Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. I remember our Cathedral Seniors Group in 2011 enjoying a play at the Mountain Playhouse in nearby Jennerstown entitled Church Basement Ladies. Four women in a rural Minnesota parish ran the church kitchen. They were the Martha s of the church who were constantly worrying about parish problems. In the sanctuary above the basement kitchen were the Mary s. They were concerned too about a lot of things, but they also prayed, and God took care of them, comforted them, and transferred their worries to Himself. Do you know about Leo Buscaglia? He was a dynamic motivational speaker who died in For 35 years he motivated audiences with his talks which were featured on PBS programs. Here is one of the finest things he ever said: Worrying does not take away tomorrow s troubles. It takes away today s peace.. How true it is! Now think about it. Where are you right now? In the basement, or in the sanctuary? Forty-eight Days to the GREAT DAY Book #8 Very Rev. Protopresbyter Frank Miloro, Chancellor 6

7 PALM SUNDAY Today the question on my mind is: Who is this Man?. The same question was on St. Matthew s mind too. All four Gospels tell the Palm Sunday story, but Matthew is the only one of the Gospel writers who asks the question: Who is this Man?. Let s answer by determining who He is NOT. He was not a revolutionary. He had no weapons, no artillery. His army consisted of twelve men dressed in street clothes and sandals. He was no revolutionary. Would He have been a teacher? The people knew what a teacher looked like. A teacher was a Pharisee in the Temple. Pharisees wore beautiful, expensive robes. Their hands were not dirty. They occupied the best seats everywhere. No this Man was not a teacher. Could He have been a king or at least a general? Not this either. Such men ride on stallionspure-bred stately animals. What animal is this Man on? You say a donkey? What? This Man is riding o the least of animals? No king or general here. So who is this Man who comes in peace and humility and rides a donkey? This Man is the example for our own humility, seen in the Scripture readings this week. Palm Sunday I the story of His humility. But tomorrow things will begin to change. In their opinion, the Temple leaders needed to free themselves of the 3-year dark night of loving your enemies, merciful forgiveness of sins, and incredible miracles. The hatred they had for Jesus was a white-hot seething hate-rage of 10,000 suns. This week it would escalate into a frenzy. Who is this Man? To really find out, enter now into Holy Week. Con now to the heavylifting part of Lent. Forty0eight Days to the GREAT DAY Book #8 Very Rev. Protopresbyter Frank Miloro, Chancellor 7
