2 EPISTLE READING The Reading is from Saint Paul to the Hebrews 13:7-16 Brethren, remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God; consider the outcome of their lives, and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today, and for ever. Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings; for it is well that the heart be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not benefited their adherents. We have an altar from which those who serve the tent have no right to eat. For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest as a sacrifice for sin are burned outside the camp. So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood. Therefore let us go forth to him outside the camp and bear the abuse he endured. For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city which is to come. Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. The Reading is from Saint Paul s First Letter to the Corinthians 8:8-13; 9:1-2 Brethren, food will not commend us to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. Only take care lest this liberty of yours somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. For if any one sees you, a man of knowledge, at table in an idol temple, might he not be encouraged, if his conscience is weak, to eat food offered to idols? And so by your knowledge this weak man is destroyed, the brother for whom Christ died. Thus, sinning against your brethren and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food is a cause of my brother s falling, I will never eat meat, lest I cause my brother to fall. 2

A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. Let us attend, Judgment Sunday Meatfare Sunday The Reading is from St. Matthew 25:31-46 The Lord said, When the Son of man comes in his glory and all the holy angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he will place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left. Then the king will say to those at his right hand, Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcome me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me. Then the righteous will answer him, Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you? And the King will answer them, Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me. Then he will say to those at his left hand, Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me. Then they also will answer, Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you? Then he will answer them, Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me. And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life. 3

4 Judgment Sunday (Mea are Sunday) The foregoing two parables especially that of the Prodigal Son have presented to us God s extreme goodness and love for man. But lest certain persons, pu ng their confidence in this alone, live carelessly, squandering upon sin the me given them to work out their salva on, and death suddenly snatch them away, the most divine Fathers have appointed this day s feast commemora ng Christ s impar al Second Coming, through which we bring to mind that God is not only the Friend of man, but also the most righteous Judge. Who recompenses to each according to his deeds. It is the aim of the holy Fathers, through bringing to mind that fearful day, to rouse us from the slumber of carelessness unto the work of virtue, and to move us to love and compassion for our brethren. Besides this, even as on the coming Sunday of Cheese-fare we commemorate Adam s exile from the Paradise of delight which exile is the beginning of life as we know it now it is clear that today s is reckoned the last of all feasts, because on the day of judgment, truly, everything of this world will come to an end. All foods, except meat and meat products are allowed during the week that follows this Sunday. Feast of the Three Hierarchs: Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, & John Chrysostom This common feast of these three teachers was ins tuted a li le before the year 1100, during the reign of the Emperor Alexis I Comnenus, because of a dispute and strife that arose among the notable and virtuous men of that me. Some of them preferred Basil, while others preferred Gregory, and yet others preferred John Chrysostom,. Quarreling among themselves over which of the tree was the greatest. Furthermore, each party, in order to dis nguish itself from the others, assumed the name of its preferred Saint; hence, they called themselves Basilians, Gregorians, or Johannites. Desiring to bring an end to the conten on, the three Saints appeared together to the saintly John Mavropous, a monk who had been ordained Bishop of Euchaita, a city of Asia Minor, they revealed to him that the glory they have at the throne of God is equal, and told him to compose a common service for the three of them, which he did with skill and beauty. Saint John of Euchaita (celebrated Oct 5/18) is also the composer of the Canon to the Guardian Angel, the Protector of Man s Life. In his old age, he re red from his Episcopal See and again took up the monas c life in a monastery in Constan nople. He reposed during the reign of the aforemen oned Emperor Alexis Comnenus ( ). 4

7 Annual Mee ng Business Discussion Annual Mee ng Business Discussion There was not a quorum of the parish at last week s Annual Mee ng. Therefore, as has been done in previous years, the mee ng was duly held and a two week comment period is now in effect. Any person wishing to comment on the business ac on taken may do so not later than February 18th. There were two pieces of business undertaken and unanimously approved by those in a endance. They are: 1. Approval of the 2018 Budget. Mo on from the Finance Commi ee to approve the proposed 2018 budget, second by Nancy Gabel. All in Favor. 2. Appointment by the Council President of Dan and Katerina Hulme as Auditors for the 2018 fiscal year. There were no objec ons to this appointment. ELECTIONS Chuck Coons, Rodney Kerrick and Carol Telehany agreed to remain as president, treasurer and secretary respec vely. All in favor. Chuck, Rodney and Carol abstained from vo ng. Jill Mertus was elected as a Trustee. Since there were no other nominees for the second vacant trustee posi on, Chuck asked Nancy Gabel to stay on the Council for another term. She agreed. There were no objec ons to this appointment. A Note From Father Vesperal Liturgy: We will institute a Vesperal Liturgy for some of our Feast Days beginning with the Feast of the Meeting of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February 14, This services combines the Vespers for the Feast with the Divine Liturgy. Holy Eucharist (Communion) will be distributed to those who wish to receive. This service is being implemented with the hope of allowing those who would like to attend the Holy Day Divine Liturgy but are unable to do so on the morning of the Feast to come and participate. Fasting rules for receiving Holy Communion of at least 3 hours before Vesperal Liturgy (same as for Liturgy of Presanctified Gifts) apply. 9 Parish and Ladies Altar Society Announcements. GO RED FOR WOMEN Heart disease is the No. 1killer of women causing 1 in 3 deaths each year. That s approximately one woman every minute! Studies show that healthy choices have resulted in 330 fewer women dying from heart disease per day. On Sunday February 18, all parishioners are encouraged to wear red in support of Heart Disease educa on. Please bring a hearthealthy dish to pass for our monthly potluck. Remember those at the Food Pantry and bring a heart-healthy food item such as tuna fish or peanut bu er, as well. 9

Marriages are solemnized on Saturdays. Consult Father at least six months in advance and before plans have been made for the wedding reception. Marriages cannot be celebrated during the fasting seasons of the Church. Baptisms are normally scheduled on Saturday or Sunday. Consult Father for scheduling. Two God-parents are required, at least one of whom must be Orthodox by faith and the other a practicing Christian. Ques ons on The Orthodox Church KINGDOM ON EARTH Q: Isn t it true that God, through Jesus Christ, has already established His Kingodom on earth and His Second Coming will be the consuma on? A:Yes, indeed. The Father does all in this created world through His Son Jesus Christ. In Christ the Kingdom of God has been established. The kingdom is realized there where God is acknowledged as Lord, where His people share in the divine life, and where His will is obeyed. The most obvious place where the kingdom is realized is in the Church. But this realiza on is always in process. That is why Christ taught us to pray Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. The kingdom is here. In the last judgment, when Christ will return, the kingdom will be established in its fullness and glory.
