3 Lenten Day 42 When was the last time you had a eureka moment? I remember years ago when I was a boy living in Windber, PA, the was one big department store in town 3 floors packed full of merchandise. I remember going there with my father and mother, and buying just about anything we needed. The name of that store was Eureka Store. Every trip there was a eureka moment. A thousand nine-hundred eight-two years ago, people just outside the city gates of Jerusalem had a eureka moment. They witnessed the Lamb of God coming into their city! Today on Palm Sunday we are being ushered into Holy Week by the same Lamb of God. Palm Sunday is saying something very important to us today about the Lamb of God. It is this. We cannot be saved by Him unless we become like Him. Do not ever forget this. When we become like Him, He actually speaks through us! Listen to what Saint John Chrysostom said sixteen hundred years ago: Let us allow Christ to speak through us. For He made us an instrument, and He wouldn t want it to be useless and idle. It s those kinds of words that drive the devil crazy! Those kinds of words also make unbelievers real uncomfortable. All who stand for good must wage a constant battle with the forces of evil. Never mind that we try to live a good life. Demons still have power in the world, and they always will to some extent, that is, until Christ comes again in glory. For Holy Week to be truly holy, you need to keep your focus on Christ. Don t let others try to get you involved in gossip and foolish life dram. Repeat to yourself the old Polish saying, Not my circus, not my monkeys. You ll be surprised how often that saying will keep you out of trouble. Eureka! Today on this Palm Sunday, let the Lamb of God take you towards His glory. Very Rev. Protopresbyter Frank Miloro, Chancellor FORTY-EIGHT DAYS TO THE GREAT DAY Book #4

9 An Explana on of the la er part of Holy Week HOLY THURSDAY MORNING Ma hew 26:2-20, John 13:3-17,Ma hew 26:21-39, Luke 22:43-45, Ma hew 26:40-27:2 On Holy Thursday morning, we ascend Mt. Zion with Christ and the Twelve, and enter into the upper room. Once there, we witness the awesome moment when, at the Last Supper, Christ abolishes the ritual prac ce of the Old Covenant and establishes the ritual of the New Covenant, prophesied by Jeremiah, through the Sacrament of Holy Communion. The faithful receive Holy Communion at the Holiest of Liturgies. HOLY THURSDAY EVENING In this service, we commemorate the undeserved suffering of Jesus Christ, endured for our sake, so that we might be reconciled anew to God our Father. The Gospel readings witness for us the betrayal and arrest of Jesus, his trial and convic on, and finally his torture, crucifixion and eath at the hands of a sinful humanity. This evening s service also includes the procession represen ng Christ carrying His own cross along the Via Dolorosa, and ends when we see before us the King of Glory crucified. The Gospels are as follows: 1. John 13: Ma hew 27: John 18: Luke 23: Ma hew 26: John 19: John 18:28-19: Mark 15: Ma hew 27: John 19: Mark 15: Ma hew 27:62-66 HOLY FRIDAY AFTERNOON 1 Corinthians 1:18-2:2, Ma hew 27:1-38, Luke 23:39-43, Ma hew 27:39-54, John 19:31-37, Ma hew 27: In this service, we are once again reverent witnesses to the undeserved suffering of Christ, to his terrible passion and death. What is remembered in a special way through liturgical commemora on and procession, is the faithfulness and love of Joseph of Arimathea who tenderly removed Christ s body from the cross, wrapped it in clean linen, and carried it to his own unused tomb for burial. HOLY FRIDAY EVENING Ezekiel 37:1-14, 1 Corinthians 5:6-8, Gala ans 3:13-14, Ma hew 27: On Good Friday evening, the theme in Christ s descent into Hades during which the Gospel of repentance and reconcilia on with God is shared with those who died before Christ s saving dispensa on in the flesh. The service begins with lamenta ons sung as we stand before the tomb of Christ commemora ng His unjust punishment and the shedding of His innocent blood. But the service ends on a note of joy and hope, with the reading of the Prophet Ezekiel in which he describes his vision of our resurrec on yet to come; in the midst of despair, we are told there is hope, for not even death can separate us from the unfailing love and power of God. Death is about to be conquered and faithfulness rewarded. HOLY SATURDAY MORNING Romans 6:3-11, Ma hew 28:1-20. On Holy Saturday morning we celebrate the theme of faithfulness receiving its reward. The crucifixion is over, Christ is buried, the twelve apostles and other disciples are sca ered and defeated. And yet, three myrrh-bearing women come in faithfulness to perform the last act of love to anoint Jesus according to the Jewish burial custom. Their unwavering devo- on is rewarded they are the first to share in Christ s triumph over evil and death. They are the first
10 An Explana on of the la er part of Holy Week witnesses to the Resurrec on. This joy is commemorated through the sca ering of bay leaves and rose petals by the priest. HOLY SATURDAY EVENING-EASTER SUNDAY MORNING Mark 16:1-8. The lamenta ons of the previous night are repeated and the church is plunged into darkness to symbolize the despair and defeat experienced before the dawn of Christ s victory over the Enemy of our salva on. Precisely at midnight, a single light emerges from the altar represen ng the victory of Christ over death, the defeat of the Prince of Darkness by Jesus, the Light of the World. As the light is passed from person to person, it pushes back the darkness of the church and defeats it completely. The Resurrec on is proclaimed in song and triumphant procession, and a er the Liturgy, its light is carried into our homes so that they too might be filled with its light and warmth and triumph. EASTER SUNDAY MORNING John 20: Christ s Resurrec on and victory is affirmed in this morning s theme. The Gospel is read in several languages to illustrate the universality of the Good News of the Resurrec on and its proclama on to the very ends of the earth. Love, forgiveness, reconcilia on, triumph and joy these are the gi s we receive because Christ lived and died and triumphed for our sake. GLORY BE TO HIM FOR ALL THING, AND MAY YOUR PASCHA BE BLESSED Taken from the church bulle n of Saint John the Bap st Bridgeport, Connec cut
