3 Brethren, The Great & Holy Pascha Epistle Reading The Reading is from Acts of the Apostles 1:1-8 In the first book, O Theophilos,I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. To them he presented himself alive after his passion by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days, and peaking of the kingdom of God. And while staying with them he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father., which, he said, you heard from me, for John batptized with water, but before many days you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit. So when they had come together, they asked him, Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom of Israel? He said to them, it is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth.. The Great and Holy Pascha Gospel Reading The Reading of the Holy Gospel according to John 1:1-17 Let us attend, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God; all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the lfie was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came for testimony, to bear witness to the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness to the light. The true light that enlightens every man was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world knew him not. He came to his own home, and his own people received him not. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God; who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father. (John bore witness to him and cried, This was he whom I said, He who comes after me ranks before me, for he was before me. ) And from his fullness have we all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through The angel exclaimed to her, Full of Grace, Rejoice O pure Virgin! Again I say Rejoice, your Son is risen from His three days in the tomb, And He has raised all the dead. Let all people rejoice! 3

4 Pascha=Easter The year was It was June, and a Camp Nazareth summer staff had been assembled. Pani Connie and I were directors of the facility at that time, and we quickly realized that there was a huge musical talent among the college students on staff. A firstever Staff Concert for each week of Diocesan Camp that year was organized, and the rehearsals began! There were solo dancers, instrumentalists and vocalists. A mixed choir completed the group, singing Carpatho-Russian folk songs and religious, folk and patriotic songs. We also came across a beautiful Resurrection Hymn called Easter Song composed by Keith Green. I remember our staff choir singing it with piano accompaniment, as though we had resurrected the Norman Luboff Choir for on Summer! Here are the lyrics: Here the bells ringing, they re singing Christ is risen from the dead. The Angel up on the tombstone said He has risen just as He said. Quickly now, go tell His disciples that Jesus Christ is no longer dead. Joy to the world! He is Risen! He is Risen! Alleluia! When I read the Passion Gospels during Holy Week. I can t help but think how disillusioned the Apostles must have been. How unlikely the prospect of Jesus Resurrection must have become during that last week of His earthly life. His followers knew they were in the minority. They were surrounded by powerful people of privilege-kings, political leaders, high-ranking religious officials. There was no such thing with the Apostles and their leader. He rode into Jerusalem on a donkey that was borrowed. He instituted the Eucharist in an upper room that was loaned to Him. Even the tomb that Jesus was buried in did not belong to Him. It was borrowed. By worldly standards, Jesus of Nazareth was a failure. He had no possessions, no fortune amassed, no privilege, no clout through friends high places. He had nothing, yet He was everything! The Resurrection proved it! That Resurrection message is alive and well today! It has survived the onslaught of all the devils of two-thousand years. And we happily gather in our churches today to celebrate it for what it meant then and for what it means for us today and every day. Today has opened the doors of Paradise to all who desire to live there with Him forever. Ho do we know? We know because CHRIST IS RISEN! INDEED HE IS RISEN! CHRISTOS VOSKRESE! VOISTINNU VOSKRESES! There is no minimum amount; please pray and with God s help decide what of your time, talents and treasures you can give back to our parish, our community and our Lord. Potluck & Pantry Next Week-Spring Cleaning As you bring something to share with our parish during our social hour, think of those who can t afford a meal and bring a donation for the Corning Community Food Pantry. This month, we are focusing on the wonderful feeling of being clean, so please bring supplies for personal and home cleaning, like soap and cleansers. Kissing of Icons In reverencing Holy Icons please do not kiss an Icon if you are wearing lipstick because lipstick stains are almost impossible to remove. 6 HE WAS LED AS A SHEEP He has no form nor comeliness; and we saw him, but he had no form nor beauty. But his form was ignoble, and inferior to that of the children of men; he was a man in suffering, and acquainted with the bearing of sickness, so that his face was turned away: he was dishonoured, and not esteemed. He bears our sins, and is pained for us: yet we accounted him to be in trouble, and in suffering, and in affliction. Father Dan healed. All we as sheep (ὡς πρόβατα) have gone astray; everyone has gone astray in his way; and the Lord gave him up for our sins. And he, because of his affliction, opens not his mouth: he was led as a sheep (ὡς πρόβατον) to the slaughter, and as a lamb before the shearer is voiceless, so he opens not his mouth. In his humility his judgment was taken away: who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken away from the earth: because of the iniquities of my people he was led to death. (Is 53: 2b-8, Septuagint-translation) Not just some of us, but all we have gone astray, as sheep. Not just Judas, or Pilate, or the Jews or Roman soldiers or riled-up crowds in the Gospel-narratives about Christ s passion. So today the God- Man, as one of us, as a sheep, paves the Way back for us, allowing Himself to be led in His humility along the Way of the Cross. Today, as we weep with the Church at the foot of our Lord s cross, I say thank You, Lord. Thank You for going through it all, through our darkness and death and hell, that we may have a Way out of there, into new life and light, in You. Let me embrace Your new Way today, once again, the Way of the Cross, in humility and gratitude for You. Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, the sinner. 6

Church Funerals are provided for practicing Orthodox Christians who are current in their Spiritual and Financial obligations to the parish otherwise burial is from the funeral home. 8 FAMILY DAY RAFFLE DRAWING SUNDAY JUNE 3, 2018 Camp Nazareth s Family Day Raffle Tickets have arrived and are now available for purchase. Tickets are still only $20 for a opportunity to win the Grand Prize of $10,000. Proceeds from the raffle help defray maintenance and upkeep expenses throughout the year. Camp Nazareth is truly the crown-jewel of our Diocese and each year children from within and outside the Diocese enjoy coming to camp, renewing old friendships and making new friends, enjoying ALL that the Camp offers and at the same time learning about God and His Holy Orthodox Church through praying together, worshiping together and just as important PLAYING together and enjoying each other s company forging friendships that can last a life-time! We were allotted 28 tickets! LET S SELL THEM ALL! See Pani Joan to purchase your ticket after Liturgy! THE NON-EVENT RAFFLE This year we will not be having a Spring Basket Raffle. Cancellation of two bake sales (sponsored by the Ladies Altar Society) and the Basket Raffle (sponsored by the church) has significantly impacted the ability to financially help our church. To partially defray financial losses, each parishioner is asked in the Spirit of Stewardship, to give a cash donation of what they would have spent on the Spring Raffle. Some parishioners donate baskets, others donate cash for expenses. Still others buy door prizes and others purchase tickets. Please search your heart and support our Non-Event. Envelopes will be distributed for you to use for this special donation. Please return it to Rodney Kerrick by May 6th. Thank you and God Bless! Let God arise and let His enemies be scattered.
