It is used for cooking and baking, as a base for perfumes, and as a healing agent. When Our Lord told his disciples to journey forth healing and preaching repentance, he instructed them to anoint the sick with oil. Brother Andre Bessette of Montreal also had the power to heal, and often exercised this power by rubbing the disabled with olive oil. Andre was a modern miracle man, born 1845, died He was a member of a large and poor Quebec family. When he was old enough to work, he became a laboring man. In fact, he spent three years in Connecticut, working on a farm or in mills. Then in 1866, he returned to Canada for admission into the Congregation of the Holy Cross. His aim was not to become a Priest, but a lay-brother in vows. The calling of lay-brother is a humble one, but Brother Andre became notable in spite of himself. He had great devotion to St. Joseph; and he spent his whole religious life spreading that devotion and building the great basilica of St. Joseph that towers above Montreal. Meanwhile, he was daily increasing in holiness of life. Thousands of pilgrims came not only to honor St. Joseph, but to consult with The Brother, and he was always at the disposal of those in need. Countless Miracles were worked through his prayers. He would usually tell the sick to rub the diseased part with a medal of St. Joseph or with St. Joseph s oil (an olive oil blessed for the purpose). As he once explained It takes faith to rub oneself with a medal or with oil. St. Joseph was obviously honoring that faith; but the fact remains that it was the little Brother who was St. Joseph s agent. That is one reason why Pope Saint John Paul II proclaimed Brother Andre Blessed on May 23, 1982, and Pope Benedict XVI canonized him a Saint in St. Peter Square on October 17, As in Christ s day, oil was the symbol, but faith was the real medicine. LEARN ABOUT OUR PARISH HISTORY A petition signed by some one hundred Catholics, residing east of Black River in the city of Lorain, led by Most Reverend Bishop Joseph Shrembs of the Cleveland Diocese, to establish a parish on Lorain s East Side. Father Isadore Rafferty of the Franciscan providence (Our Lady of Consolation) was appointed the first pastor of the shrine of St. Anthony of Padua. In the early hours of Sunday morning, April 22, 1923, a temporary altar was set up in the dance hall at century Park and at 9:00 am the first mass was offered with 275 in attendance. The following Saturday night a fire of mysterious origin destroyed the dance hall. 5 JULY 15, 2018 MISSION COOPERATION APPEAL Fr. Tony Chakkungal V.C., a Vincentian Missionary Priest from India, will be in our parish on Saturday, July 21st & Sunday, July 22nd, to participate in our Annual Missionary Cooperation Plan. He will share his missionary experience at Masses and will make an appeal on behalf of the Vincentian Missions. The Vincentian Missionaries need our help to carry our their many missionary, educational and charitable activities. They need our special financial support for the training of your men studying for priesthood. There will be a second collection, next weekend, July 21st & 22nd, to help the Missionary work. We urge you to be generous in your mission offering and please keep Fr. Tony Chakkungal and all the Vincentian Missionaries in your prayers. Luncheon buffet at 11:30 am with Ms. Sirak speaking from 12:00-1:00 pm. Ms. Sirak received her undergraduate degree in Psychology from Baldwin Wallace College and her Master s degree in Social Work from Cases Western University. She is an independently licensed social worker with 10 years of experience working with the mental health population with specialization in corrections and prisoner re-entry. ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH LORAIN, OH VOLUNTEER NEEDED The We Care We Share food pantry located at 1888 E. 31st St., South Lorain, is in need of a volunteer, experienced bookkeeper to manage their books on your own schedule of hours at your own location. If interested or need more info, contact Bill at WCWS, SATURDAY NIGHT SUPPER AT ST. TERESA Please join us for a Saturday Night Supper at St. Teresa of Avila Church on July 21st from 5:30-7:00 pm. Volunteers are needed from 9 am to 8 pm each day, Monday through Thursday, either individually or as a group. Come out and help residents fish, swim, play cards/games or move around the camp; bring, cook or help serve a meal; visit one-onone. Join us for a morning, an afternoon, all day or all week!
