He who receives communion in sin will increase in sin, for he has mocked Christ s gift of Himself. St. Paul constantly warns us against the unworthy reception of communion: A man should examine himself first; only then should he eat of the bread and drink of the cup. St. Cyprian, the great third-century bishop of Carthage repeated Paul s warning, on the basis of his own experience. In the year 250, the Roman emperor Decius commanded that all citizens, Christians included, offer sacrifice to the pagan gods, and then receive communion by eating the sacrificed meat and drinking the sacrificed wine. Frightened by the threat of death, hundreds of Christians hastened to commit the prescribed idolatry. Then, with equal haste, they tried to get back into the good graces of the Church. St. Cyprian tells us that one of those Christians who had received the idolatrous communion dared to mingle with the Christian faithful on the following Sunday and held out his hands to receive the body of Christ. But it didn t work. He could not eat or handle the holy of the Lord, says Cyprian, but found in his hands, when opened, that he had a cinder. God seldom shows his displeasure with an unworthy communicant in such a startling manner. He leaves it to the conscience of each guilty one to reproach himself for insulting the King of Love. But in the feast day Mass of Corpus Christi, the Church cautions us against this sacrilege in the profound poem of St. Thomas Aquinas, the Lauda Sion Salvatorem: The good and wicked alike receive, but with the unlike destiny of life or death. To the wicked it is death, but life to the good. See how different is the result, though each receives the same. ~Rev. Edward J Smith

4 ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH LORAIN, OH ADORATION CHAPEL It was a turbulent and trying time in Poland s history; many people fell victim to the dreaded Black Plague that stalked Europe. The population was depleted and religious standards changed. People were devastated by the loss of family and friends and the overall outlook was hopeless. A strange phenomenon arose from the swamps near Bawol. Nobody knew what to make of the rays of light and lightning bolts that ran across the sky. After the lights were seen, people visited the spot to see who or what was causing the amazing light that nightly lit up the sky. During the miraculous occurrence, news reached Bawol that someone had broken into a church in Krakow and stolen the pyx containing the Most Holy Eucharist. The bishop instructed the people to pray and fast for the safe return of the Sacred Host, but was fearful that the thief had desecrated the Real Presence of Jesus. Hearing of the mysterious lights emanating from the swamp, the Bishop led a procession to the site. The people dug into the marsh and found the pyx, which contained the Blessed Sacrament, perfectly preserved. After the Sacred Host was restored to the Krakow Church, the mysterious lights stopped. King Casimir the Great had the swamp drained and erected a magnificent church which he dedicated as Corpus Christi, the Body of Christ. PRO LIFE THOUGHT OF THE WEEK Continuation of more reasons why the Pro-Life Movement will win! THE MOST HOLY BODY & BLOOD OF CHRIST SUNDAY UPDATES FROM THE MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT ON THE CHURCH DOORS Unfortunately the new hinges we purchased from the Florida company did not work. After an extremely frustrating day of taking the door down, adjusting the hinges, and putting the door back up multiple times, we had to reinstall the original hinges. After visiting multiple machine shops we found Dave Fenik at DFI in Elyria, who was able to replace the bearings in the lower hinges. These have now been replaced on all three sets of the double wooden exterior doors. The top hinges have a thinner bearing and were more of a challenge. These bearings are not available, but Mr. Fenik was able to repack and reseal the bearings. The first set of upper hinges have been installed on the West side doors. These doors now open and close beautifully. One of the upper hinges on the South doors was completely missing, so Mr. Fenik is using the hinge from the East doors as a pattern to fabricate a new one for the South doors. Once we get the upper hinges back, all the doors will be fully functional in a couple of hours. We are thankful for Mr. Fenik s expertise, his willingness to help us, and his reasonable pricing. Some vendors would charge exorbitantly for a service they alone could provide, but Mr. Fenik is simply charging for his time. 50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY MASS There will be a 50th Wedding Celebration on Sunday, July 29th, 2:30 pm at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. Rhoda Wise was a mystic & stigmatic who received many miracles & visits from both Jesus & St. Theresa the Little Flower. She is currently in the process of being investigated for canonization.
