2 2 Learning to Pray Liturgically: Part II ( continued from June edition ) by Fr. Paul Schmidt Soon after the Second Vatican Council, when the liturgy was first translated into English, then began to change, a different expectation arose. Some people felt that if they were not making noise, they were not participating actively. Choirs were banished, because they stole the people's parts. The congregation did everything not done by the priest. Though this extreme did not last too long, some still feel that they are participating only when they are saying or singing something. They are not praying when a choir or soloist sings. Certainly there are times at Mass when it is more appropriate for the people to sing or pray. There are also times which call for a solo or a choral prayer or for instrumental music. If we go to Mass with the idea that we are being robbed every time the choir sings, we will not be able to worship very well. Active, full, and conscious participation of any kind must be internal as well as external. We must take care that, whether we make the sounds or whether others make them, they express a spirit within us. We need to learn how to keep praying when someone else is making the sounds. We also need to learn how to "do silence" better at Mass. Those who plan liturgies have to resist the temptation to fill up every moment with motion or sound. The priest who presides has to develop a sense of when to seize a period of silence which happens at random, perhaps after the homily or before a prayer. We need to be alert, so as not to miss a silent moment. Learning to pray liturgically, then, is partly a matter of learning what to expect. It is good to review our expectations, to see if they are realistic, to determine if they are helping us or getting in our way. (Article from

3 3 Our New ILP Credo Hymnal : One Year Later by Colton Martin We are well into our first year of using our new pew resources from International Liturgy Publications (ILP). The Credo Hymnal, Book of Divine Worship (weekend/red hardback missal), and the Word & Eucharist (weekday/brown hardback missal) books have been a worthy addition to our pews. We began using our new resources last fall and have since learned many new hymns, celebrated many memorials and feasts with suggested readings appropriate for each occasion, and learned a new sung Mass setting! Our resources have truly had a heavy first year of use. But perhaps our new books still hold more beautiful secrets to be explored. For example, how many times have you used the Prayers section at the back of the Credo Hymnal (p. 815)? did you even know it existed? There is a wealth of prayers included from pp , including prayers for before Mass, after Communion, traditional prayers, prayers to the Holy Spirit, and even popular devotions (to name but a few). The Prayers section begins with this quote from Blessed Teresa of Calcutta: If we pray, we will believe; if we believe, we will love; if we love, we will serve. In the spirit of her timely reminder, during this month filled with Scriptures dedicated to the Real Presence of Our Lord in the Holy Eucharist, I exhort you to flip through the pew resources and discover what other gems they may hold for you and your prayer. The prayer below is one of many beautiful prayers found in the Credo Hymnal : Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary (after Communion) O Mary, Virgin and Mother most holy, behold, I have received your most dear Son, whom you conceived in your immaculate womb, brought forth, nursed and embraced most tenderly. Behold him at whose sight you used to rejoice and be filled with all delight; him whom, humbly and lovingly, once again I present and offer him to you to be clasped in your arms, to be loved by your heart, and to be offered up to the Most Holy Trinity as the supreme worship of adoration, for your own honor and glory and for my needs and for those of the whole world. I ask you therefore, most loving Mother: entreat for me the forgiveness of all my sins and, in abundant measure, the grace of serving him in the future more faithfully, and at the last, final grace, so that with you I may praise him for all the ages of ages. Amen.
