Sat. 7:30AM 9 AM 7AM 9 AM 7AM 9AM 5 PM 9 AM 11 AM IN SYMPATHY Please pray for the repose of the souls of our dearly departed, especially Loretta Besong and Ellen McHugh, and Jack Montanile. May their souls & the souls of all the faithful departed, through the Mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen From Father Jay The Courage to Say Yes (to three identical brothers!) Naturally conceived - and truly by the grace of God- at 2:52, 2:53 and 2:54 AM on February 6, 2019, my dear cousin Elizabeth Rounding and her husband Tyler welcomed three brave identical baby boys to our family- Philip O Connell (5 lbs, 10 oz, 19 in), Emmett Jacob (5 lbs, 13 oz, 19 in), and Jameson Felix (5 lbs, 10 oz, 18 in). They were born at 34 weeks and 5 days. It is not unusual for there to be issues with breathing and heart rates-among other things-this early. Thankfully, they grew well in that time (17 lbs, 1 oz. of baby!), and all are being cared for closely in the NICU. The proud husband and father says, This comes at the end of a very complex and extremely rare pregnancy that Elizabeth managed so magnificently all the way through. I cannot say enough about her strength and resilience to give these boys every chance she could to be born healthy. Now she is recovering and resting for her next superhero adventure. I am so proud of my family and our parish family, for so many of you are superheroes in accepting the gift of life and have sent me letters, cards, and communications about your conviction for pre-born Life! Since Woe vs Wade, our country (and recently Ireland) has been mislead politically and legally into thinking that the ending of innocent preborn lives in the womb is a right. We need to continue to be brave and defend the most innocent lives in the tender spot of their mother s womb. Let us pray a daily Hail Mary (better yet an Angelus Prayer) asking that, just as Mary said yes to Jesus, our society will say yes to pre-born life in the womb (you never know...that yes could lead to three miracles named Phil, Emmet and Jameson)! Praying that we permit God s mercy to protect and bless us like Mary did, Fr. Jay Donohue (Lk 1:50)

What are the motivations of our thoughts, our words, our actions, our entire lives? Is it something in this life accomplishment, knowledge, wealth, power, prestige? Or is it something else, like heaven and our eternal reward? As Christians, there are countless references in Sacred Scripture and in the teachings from every generation of the Church that remind us that we were not made for this world. For instance, in the First Book of Chronicles, King David prays, For before you we are strangers and travelers, like all our ancestors. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without a future. (1 Chr 29:15) That means that we are made for something more, the greatest thing, life for ever with God in heaven. However, it does not mean that we can just sit back and enjoy the ride here, as if heaven is a given. Rather, as Jesus reminds us in the Beatitudes in today s Gospel, we must put ourselves and our wants aside and instead live for God and others. On Mission for The Church Alive! seeks to provide for the good of the Church so that, in building up the Kingdom of God here on earth, we can be welcomed home God s Kingdom in heaven. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed. SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST JOIN US FOR THE ROSARY ON SUNDAYS! Each Sunday morning, beginning at 9:20, the Rosary is recited. Even though the number of hungry people worldwide has fallen nearly 30% over the last 20 years, over 815 million people still go hungry every single day. Every 5 seconds a child under the age of 5 dies and nearly half of those deaths are from hunger related causes. Battling hunger isn t just about making sure that people have three meals a day it s also making sure they have access to clean water, good healthcare, education, and economic opportunities. It s about helping kids have the hope of a healthy, brighter future. It is through the generosity and courage of our youth to give up their weekend and food to help raise awareness for those kids that are suffering worldwide and learning ways that they can help beyond the famine. Please consider helping our teens reach their monetary goal by donating to our 30 hour famine. PREGNANCY LOSS & INFERTILITY SUPPORT You are not alone. Come join other women who have suffered the loss of a pregnancy through miscarriage or stillbirth or are struggling with infertility. Through friendship and compassionate support, we seek to navigate the grieving and healing process and grow with the Lord. 4 By Cindy Deschaine, & Rose Curcio, & The Road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35) is a well known story form the Gospel of Luke. But do people understand how the exchange between the two men and Jesus pertain to the Sacraments? Anyone can learn about Jesus in the Bible, in various books, from searching the internet, or even from watching movies. We can even be a theologian and know everything there is to know about Jesus but still not have him alive in our hearts. The two men walking on the road listened as the stranger taught them about Jesus. But it wasn t until they shared in a meal with him, that they knew who he truly was. A person can know all there is to know about Jesus, but without participating in a Sacramental life, they do not truly know who he is. It is through the Sacraments that we receive God s grace in our lives. This week, our Faith Formation families will be sharing this lesson with their children in lesson on the Mass. As the students in our Faith Formation reflect on the questions about Mass, I challenge each of you to reflect on the same questions. How does God speak to you at Mass? (Are you listening to what he wants you to hear or are you busy making your do to list for the week in your head?) How do you prepare yourself to hear his Word? (Do you read Scripture in advance of Mass and pray to be open to his Word?) Do you see Jesus around you in Mass? He is present in the Priest, the people around you, the words that are spoken, and he is in the Eucharist. Do you see him? Pray that you can be more open to his presence, not only during Mass, but in every aspect of your life. MARY S MANTLE The Apostolate Committee is once again collecting lap afghans or afghans to be distributed to shut ins and those in hospitals or nursing homes. We are asking those that can knit or crochet to consider donating a new afghan/lap afghan so that we can deliver these to a Veterans Hospital to be given to veterans that permanently live in the Veterans home or have no one to visit them. So far we have delivered about 200 afghans or lap afghans to shut ins and patients in different nursing homes and hospitals. A card is given stating that we at Our Lady of Peace Church remember you and are praying for you. If you can see how happy this small gesture makes people, you would know what a beautiful gift they feel they are receiving. Our goal this year is to take as many afghans to Veterans from our Great Grouping [ Our Lady of Peace, St. John and Paul's, St. John the Baptist, and Good Samaritan] to as many Veterans as we can deliver to between Veteran s Day and Christmas. We welcome anyone from our grouping to help us achieve this in any way. (continued in next column) Afghans may be delivered to the Our Lady of Peace Church office between 9:00-3:00 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. For more information or to help please call or contact anyone from the Apostolate Committee at Our Lady of Peace by calling the PROPHET TO THE NATIONS: Scott Hahn SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Readings: Jeremiah 17:5-8 Psalm 1:1, Corinthians 15:12, Luke 6:17, The blessings and woes we hear in today s Gospel mark the perfection of all the wisdom of the Old Testament. That wisdom is summed up with marvelous symmetry in today s First Reading and Psalm: Each declares that the righteous those who hope in the Lord and delight in His Law will prosper like a tree planted near living waters. The wicked, who put their trust in human beings, are cursed to wither and die. Jesus is saying the same thing in the Gospel. The rich and poor are, for Him, more than members of literal economic classes. Their material state symbolizes their spiritual state. The rich are the insolent of today s Psalm, boasting of their self-sufficiency, the strength of their flesh, as Jeremiah says in the First Reading. The poor are the humble, who put all their hope and trust in the Lord. We ve already seen today s dramatic imagery of reversal in Mary s Magnificat. There, too, the rich are cast down while the hungry are filled and the lowly exalted (see Luke 1:45 55 also 16:19 31). That s the upside-down world of the Gospel: in poverty we gain spiritual treasure unimaginable; in suffering and even dying on account of the Son of Man, we find everlasting life. The promises of the Old Testament were promises of power and prosperity in the here and now. The promise of the New Covenant is joy and true freedom even amid the misery and toil of this life. But not only that. As Paul says in today s Epistle, we re to be pitied if our hope is for this life only. The blessings of God mean that we ll laugh with the thanksgiving of captives released from exile (see Psalm 126:1 2), feast at the heavenly table of the Lord (see Psalm 107:3 9), leap for joy as John the Baptist leapt in his mother s womb (see Luke 6:23; 1:41, 44), and rise with Christ, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
