Most of us know of leprosy only from periodic references to the disease in the Bible, or from movies like Ben Hur. Most folks assume that leprosy no longer exists, but about 200 cases are reported in the United states each year. In the 1980 s over 5 million people were afflicted with the disease, mostly in impoverished countries. With the development of modern medicine, we know that the disease is curable, and that it is not as contagious as once thought. At the time of Christ, having leprosy was a death sentence. Tragically, people diagnosed with leprosy were forced to move away from family and friends and live a meager existence, relying on the charity of friends and family for food and supplies. As awful as the disease was, this social isolation was probably more painful than the disease itself. Are the biblical stories about leprosy still relevant today? They are if we consider the way these people were treated by society and the emotional pain they endured. I m not sure when the phrase was coined, but the term Social Leper refers to people who are so unpopular that associating with them can result in being shunned by others. While there are many wonderful things about Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and other social media, they can also be a source of great pain for teenagers and adults alike. As if adolescent bullying was not bad enough, it seems that it has become much more virulent than ever before with the advent of Cyber Bulling. It is not uncommon for high school and middle school children to post pictures and comments on social media with the intent of sharing with friends. It s also very common and very easy for an individual or a group to unleash anonymous criticism and vicious verbal attacks on unsuspecting young people, ruining self-esteem and often leading to depression or self-destructive behavior. If your children or grandchildren are active on Facebook or other social media, I encourage you to talk with them about it. Ask if they ve experienced bullying or similar behaviors toward themselves or their friends. It can present an invaluable teachable moment with respect to bullying, as well as the need to sometimes rally behind those who are less popular, even if it means risking our own popularity. Today s world is infinitely more complex than the world I grew up in, but the Bible still speaks to us about core values and the need to do what is right. In a society where we have allowed television and the internet to become babysitters for a whole generation, we need to be ever more vigilant and attentive, recognizing that the devil stills prowls about the world seeking the souls of our loved ones. We need to stay involved in their lives. Men & Women Needed To Serve as Greeters/Ushers We are looking for a handful of men and women who regularly attend Mass to assist in serving as Ushers/ Greeters at Good Samaritan. If you are interested, please call Rose Curcio at extension 12. We will schedule an informational meeting to explain what is involved
2 LENTEN REGULATIONS 1. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of Fast & Abstinence. The Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence in the United States 2. The obligation of abstinence (refraining from eating meat) begins at the age of 14. The law of fasting (limiting oneself to one full meal and two lighter meals) obliges all between the ages of No one should consider this obligation lightly. 3. Those individuals who have a medical condition in which fasting may be considered harmful are not obliged to fast, but should perform some other act of penance or charity. 4. Pastors and parents are to see to it that minors, though not bound by the law of fast and abstinence, are educated in the authentic sense of penance and encouraged to do acts of penance suitable to their age. 5. All members of the Christian Faithful are encouraged to do acts of penance and charity during the Lenten season beyond what is prescribed by the law. 6. As a general rule, a request for a dispensation from the obligation of abstinence on Fridays of Lent will not be considered unless some serious reason is present. The attendance at social events, banquets, wedding rehearsals or receptions, or funeral wakes are not considered sufficient reason to request a dispensation.
