Sentence of the Day: Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labour for that which does not satisfy? Eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. Isaiah 55.2 Prayer of the Day Living God, whose Son Jesus fed the hungry with the bread of his life and the word of his kingdom: renew your people with your heavenly grace, and in all our weakness sustain us with your true and living bread, Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Readings 1 st Reading: 2 Samuel a OT p. 266 Today s reading is the sequel to the tale of David s predatory sexual behaviour towards Bathsheba and the murder of her husband, Uriah. This week is Judgement Day, when God sends the prophet Nathan to David who cleverly confronts David with his deceit and hubris. Nathan shows David that he must apply his ethics to his own behaviour. David s confession of sin ends his illusion of power and secrecy, but this mitigates only some of the tragic consequences which will flow from his actions.

4 Psalm: Psalm APBA p 274 This psalm of lament takes up the sentiment of David s confession, I have sinned against the Lord (2 Sam 12:13a). It is sometimes called the Miserere and is well-known through Gregorio Allegri s ( ) famous setting to music. Because the psalmist can do nothing to change the circumstances caused by sin, God s help is sought, for the one against whom they have sinned is none other than God (v. 4). So it is from God the psalmist seeks mercy and forgiveness. 2nd Reading: Ephesians NT p. 179 At this point in the letter, the mood changes from one of exultation in the blessings of salvation to exhortation about living the Christian life in all its fullness. To do this, we have the gift of the Spirit to bring unity to the church and the power to equip all members of the Church for their common ministry in the Body of Christ. Love not only embraces us; it also empowers and equips us for ministry to others. Gospel: John NT p. 91 Last week, Jesus miraculously fed five thousand people. For the author of John s Gospel, miracles mean much more than just seeing them happen and benefitting from them. These verses, then, are an in-depth study of Jesus as the bread of life, which will continue over the next few weeks. This bread is the offer from God, of a relationship of love and acceptance, the source of life, eternal life. Belief is involved, inasmuch as we need to believe that Jesus really does play that role. Faith is then acting on that belief in trust and becoming part of God s life in the world. Music Processional: 189 Alleluia! It is planned to re-launch the book to coincide with the upcoming 170 th Anniversary celebrations. To print the book professionally will cost around $400 for an initial print run of 200 copies. 8 In the Community Pleasant Sunday Afternoon: The next concert in the popular Walkerville Rotary series will be on Sunday August 19 in the Walkerville Town Hall at 2.15 pm when we will be entertained by In 2 the Music. Afternoon tea provided and gold coin to defray costs. If you require transport, please ring Rex Adams or John Pohl See notice at back of church. News from the Parish Council Parish Council has continued its important work in the parish over the past few months. Here is a summary of some of the more topical issues: The first of our revamped Market Days was held last month. Parish Council was pleased to support the efforts of Allan Edgar, who has been largely responsible for liaising with the new sellers and updating our branding of this event. More help for Allan in this venture would be greatly appreciated. The Parish Representatives to the St. Andrew s School Board for the period (inclusive) have been ratified by Parish Council. Angus Netting and Kristian Downing will fill these roles again, and we are grateful to them for their work in this important relationship. The paving around the tree in the Parish Centre Forecourt has been removed, as it was being lifted by the tree roots, and was a health and safety issue. This will also allow the tree to be more healthy, as its roots are no longer being encumbered by the paving. The Bell Tower project has reached its next stage, with a Development Application being submitted to Walkerville Council. The Council have sought initial approval from the State Heritage Department, prior to considering it themselves. 8

9 Thank-you It was lovely to receive the certificate of appreciation from Anglicare, in recognition of the generosity of the parish community in supporting the Anglicare Winter Appeal. The volunteer who came to pick up the donations said that he had never had to make three trips before in order to drop everything off!! Thanks again to Malcolm Allen for his energy and enthusiasm, and to all who assisted and donated. 9
