2 Page 2 Sixth Sunday of Easter Deacon Bob Kelleher With gratitude to God our Father, the Kelleher Family is looking forward to celebrating the 20th anniversary of Deacon Bob s ordination by His Excellency Bishop Norman F. McFarland. On May 6, 1995, Bob was raised to the order of deacon; a disciple of the one who came to serve rather than be served. The deacon s role in the early church was to assist the Bishop, primarily in the area of service. They were a strong force in the Church until the 8th Century; however, there is only speculation for the decline of the diaconate. There are several notable deacons in our history, Many of the early popes were deacons, including Pope Saint Callistus I, Pope Innocent I and Pope Saint Leo I. Many scholars believe that St. Francis, who was training in the seminary, decided to stay a deacon. St. Lawrence, the Patron Saint of Cooks, was a deacon. In 1964, the Second Vatican Council re-instated the Diaconate. The Council stated that the church must act as an advocate and be the voice for all of our sisters and brothers, especially those who are poor or afflicted in any way. It is within this context that Pope Paul VI, by his own hand, later restored the diaconate as a means of ordained service on the feast of St. Ephren, the Deacon, on June 18, Since deacons work in many varied ministries and roles, it s almost impossible to define the work of a deacon. Their work does fall into three categories: Service of Charity, Service of the Word, and Service of the Altar. Nearly 150 children from St. Kilian will receive their 1st Holy Communion during the month of May. Thank you to our Catechists who helped prepare the children and everyone who donated, served, prayed, participated and volunteered at this special liturgical celebration! We were thrilled to see so many friends, family and children here to celebrate with us. We appreciate everyone s patience in the parking lot, waiting in line, with seating and beyond What a wonderful gift to our parish community! We are grateful for the opportunity to be a part of these children s faith journeys and welcome them to the Table of the Lord!

9 St. Kilian Catholic Church Page 9 Prayers and Appreciation As we come to the close of another year of Religious Education classes we would like to thank all who worked with our children this year to continue to develop their faith formation. Our RE Staff, Catechists and Volunteers know that working with our children is a privilege that we don t take lightly. Everything we do is in support of what our parents and families do every day in their homes. Your prayers and blessings and use of other sacramentals, weekly Mass attendance with your child and the conversations you share with your child about God and Jesus are very critical to forming your child s faith as a Catholic Christian. Although our RE program is coming to a close, religious formation in the home knows no season. Your child s faith will continue to grow strong through these summer months in your family prayer, play and service to others. Enjoy all the blessings of the season and we ll see you again soon! Beautiful roses will be available at all Masses for donations to Obria Medical Clinic (formerly called Birth Choice). In just the past eight years, the efforts of Birth Choice have saved the lives of 4,500 babies. Christians in Commerce is a thirty-year-old organization that encourages and equips its members to live the life of Christ in their workplaces. We hold weekly one-hour meetings with fellowship, prayer, teaching, and discussion. Both the men s and the NEWLY FORMED women s chapters meet every Monday at 7 PM in the parish center at St. Kilian. One in six couples will struggle with infertility at some point in their marriage. There are many different types and faces of infertility: primary infertility (no living children), secondary infertility (inability to conceive after having had one or more children), permanent infertility (biological inability to conceive), miscarriage, stillbirth, recurring pregnancy loss, and infant loss. The journey is a difficult one, and can be isolating and lonely. We hope to create a supportive atmosphere to allow those in the midst of infertility to pray, share, and explore church teaching together, as well as to serve and inform the parish as a whole. Please join us at our initial interest meeting on Wednesday, May 20, 2015, at 7:00 p.m., in Rooms 4 & 5 of the Parish Center. We welcome both men and women dealing with infertility, and invite couples to attend together. We do ask that children not attend, in order to be sensitive to all participants.
