2 2 St. John the Evangelist Church, Greece, New York March 25, 2018 A Standing Ovation for God s Word Between the second reading and the Gospel, we all rise to our feet and sing ALLELUIA! This ancient word is a word of celebration. We cheer hooray! in our day. ALLELUIA is the ancient hooray and we stand and sing because we are awaiting the Good News (the Gospel) of Jesus. Following the singing of the Alleluia, if the deacon is present, he proclaims the Gospel. Before the deacon or priest proclaims the Gospel, the presider prays this prayer, May Almighty God be in your (my) lips so that you (I) may worthily proclaim the Gospel. At the end of the Gospel reading, the Alleluia may also be sung. This takes place when the deacon may process with the Book of Gospels to a special book stand if one is erected in the sanctuary. Traditionally when at a sporting event people jump to their feet and cheer. At the end of an excellent play or opera, the audience jumps to its feet to give a standing ovation to the players or singers. Our standing at the ALLELUIA is our standing ovation for God s Word. Peace and love to all. Rev. Peter EnyanBoadu Blessing of Food on Holy Saturday THIS Saturday, March 31 at 2:00 PM in Church Join in this wonderful Polish tradition that is also accepted in the Catholic Church. The food that is blessed on Holy Saturday will be part of the Easter Sunday meal. The Stations of the Cross take place every Wednesday morning during Lent following the 8:15 AM Mass and are followed by the Rosary. Annual Chrism Mass The annual Chrism Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Cathedral THIS Tuesday, March 27 at 7:00 PM by Bishop Salvatore Matano. This Eucharistic celebration involves the blessing of the Oil of Catechumens, the Oil of the Sick, and the Sacred Chrism. These oils are used throughout the year in our Diocese of Rochester in the sacramental life of the Church. In addition, the priests at this Mass renew their commitment to their priestly ministry. It is a beautiful celebration and all are invited to attend. Excerpts from Our Sunday Visitor, Inc Holy Thursday Washing of Feet In John s Gospel account of the Last Super, Jesus models for us how to serve when he washes the disciples feet. It is our tradition to invite parishioners to participate in the Washing of Feet at Our Holy Thursday Mass of the Lord s Supper. Good Friday Celebration of the Passion of the Lord This is the most sober liturgy of the church year; the altar is completely bare. The Liturgy of the Word is followed by adoration of the cross and communion. However there is no Liturgy of the Eucharistthis is not a Mass. Meditate on the words of Pope Francis as he tells us something of his own experience of this moment of grace in his own life I am a sinner whom the Lord has looked upon. Good Friday Collection Pope Francis has asked our parish to support Christians in the Holy Land. Through the Annual Pontifical Good Friday Collection, you join with Catholics around the world to stand in solidarity with the Church in the Holy Land. When you contribute to the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, you become an instrument of peace in a troubled land. Easter Vigil The high point of the liturgical year, the Easter Vigil, immerses us in the mystery of death and resurrection, and engages all of our senses. We move from darkness to light, from a single voice chanting the Exultet to the triumphant symphony of instruments and voices proclaiming Glory to God and Alleluia! We watch as the catechumens are immersed in the waters of baptism, anointed with Sacred Chrism, and welcomed to the Eucharistic banquet. We share the sign of peace and embrace with those who have joined our church community.

4 4 St. John the Evangelist Church, Greece, New York March 25, 2018 Palm Sunday It was during the fourth century in Jerusalem that Christians first starting using palm branches in commemoration of Jesus entrance into Jerusalem. Today, we continue to use palms in most churches on this Sunday, Catholic and Protestant alike. It is one of those traditions of worship that, no matter how far apart we may seem at times, we continue to share due to our common heritage. But Palm Sunday is also known as Passion Sunday, because we hear an account of the passion of Jesus Christ during the liturgy. Most churches also share this reading in common. Many Catholic parishes use multiple lectors to proclaim the Gospel, while it is not uncommon for a similar reading or even a performance in many mainstream Protestant churches. The commonality found in the worship on this particular Sunday seems to highlight the fundamental truth in the observance: Jesus Christ died for everyone. He did not die on a cross for just Catholics, or just Orthodox, or just Protestants. Whether one acknowledges it or not, he was crucified for all those who are born of man. Today, we rejoice not just for what he has done for us but also for what he has done for all of creation. Lenten Fish Fry St. John the Evangelist Church and Knights of Columbus Council 3892 invite you to our Lenten Fish Fry. When: Fridays during Lent, 4:00 to 7:00 PM Where: St. John s Parish Center FISH FRY Menu Battered Fried $10 Skinless Baked $10 Fried Shrimp (7 Large Butterfly) $10 Half portion of any of the above $ 6 Cheese Pizza Slice $ 2.00 All meals come with a choice of: French Fries or Mashed Potatoes Salad or Cole Slaw Roll Children under 3 eat free! (choice of fish sticks, mac & cheese or half slice of pizza). Dear Music Ministry and Parish Family, Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord ~ Truly this man was the Son of God! Were You There is one of the most prominent and popular of the AfricanAmerican spirituals. A hymn that is meant to bring the past events of Christ s suffering and death into the present and transform us in its light. As we continue our journey through Lent and prepare for Good Friday where many of our faith communities will no doubt sing Were You There, anamnesis calls us not only to remember Christ s death but also the stories of all those who suffer from injustice, persecution, abuse and illness. Jesus endured so much for our salvation. I thought to share this with you again. Patience is a virtue. To be patient is to endure discomfort without Let us pray for more patience Easter Plant During the Easter Season remember a loved one (living or deceased) by donating an Easter Plant toward the beauty of our beloved St. John s Church. So, let us pray for more patience and let us start each day with a grateful and humble heart. Love and be kind to one another.
