There is need of only one thing." Martha was caught up in a whirlwind of her own making. She stressed herself out with all the tasks and chores she thought she had to do to host Jesus, but Jesus wasn't the one who expected all of that. He just wanted Martha's presence, her company and friendship. His only expectation was that Martha would prepare for him her heart, but she was fixated on preparing her home instead. How often do we create a similar whirlwind in our lives? How often do we fixate on external details, on making a good impression, on having all appearances looking just so, but forget what really matters? How often do we make ourselves "anxious and worried" about all we think we have to do? In today's Gospel Jesus calls us to stop the frenetic activity of our lives, to pause and listen, imitating Mary "who sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak." This can seem impossible. We look at our calendars and our to-do lists and cannot find a single slot in which to squeeze quiet prayer or silent spiritual listening. But Jesus asks us to reorganize our priorities. He tells us, "There is need of only one thing." Really, Jesus? Have you seen our lists!? What can we possibly eliminate? Don't we need to do all of this? The Lord says no. What we need to do is to make time to be with him. The same Lord who turned water into wine and fed five thousand men with five loaves of bread and two fish can also multiply our time. So instead of being like Martha who tried to tell Jesus what to do-"tell her to help me"-let's be like Mary who listened to what Jesus had to say.

3 SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 17, 2016 Happenings Volunteers Needed For Mercy Meals: As Father Michael spoke about, a parish family is called to offer prayer and comfort to our sick brothers and sisters. With that in mind, we would like to ask for volunteers to make meals for our sick parishioners. This can be a simple dish. This helps the caregiver and lightens their load. Those interested in helping with this ministry are asked to contact the parish office. Volunteers needed for Outreach Ministry: The Outreach Ministry are volunteers who visit nursing home residents and shut-ins from our parishes We are in need of more volunteers for this ministry. Volunteers need to sign up for one month per year. Please call the parish office for more information. Deacon s Closet. The purpose of this ministry is to assist those who cannot afford medically needed equipment to assist with in home care with items such as wheelchairs, hospital beds, canes, walkers, commodes, etc. If you have any of these items and are not using them, please consider donating them to the Deacon s Closet at Parish so that we can help out those in need. If you need the use of items or want to donate, please call There is no charge for the use of equipment. Every Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. the Mercedarian Third Order prays the Rosary for the end of abortion, world peace and for the sick or distressed of our parish. Everyone is invited to participate. The people we encounter in today s scripture readings all have something to teach us about hospitality. Sarah cooked and served while Abraham was attentive to every need of their guests. Martha gives of her energy to serve Jesus, while Mary listens attentively to him. Each expresses hospitality differently -- welcoming, listening, serving. Taken all together, these form the ultimate expression of hospitality...the demonstration of love that Jesus shows us. We see hospitality as a balance between action and contemplation. Martha's actions in serving meet a temporary need. Mary's contemplation of what Jesus has to say provides her with lasting enrichment. Sarah acts on the work that needs to be done while Abraham recognizes the presence of God in their guests. True hospitality is the genuine welcoming of others, and being attentive to others as Jesus taught us. Today's Faith Moment was provided by Christ the King Seminary.
