In the next month we will start our nomination process for officers to serve in the year. The Council By-Law calls for the appointment of a committee of members. I have appointed Sylvester Ikpi as Nominating Committee Chair. Bob Worthington and John Murray will also serve as members of this group. We need committed members to serve as officers. If you are a 3 rd degree member, please give this some consideration. The first slate of nominees will be presented at the first meeting in April with elections scheduled for the second meeting in May. District Deputy Report Charles Pat Springmann, PGK, PFN April has arrived and as we celebrate Easter we thank the Lord for all of His gifts to us and our loved ones. During Lent we sacrificed material needs to prepare for Easter. Our Lord died for the forgiveness of our sins. We in turn should forgive our fellow man for any slight against us. Membership is very important for the growth of our Order. There are many who join the Knights and cannot serve for several years, but when they do have free time they commit their time and even run the chairs (e.g. your current Grand Knight). Do not prejudge any man who wants to the join the order. He may become a Grand Knight down the road. Every practical Catholic gentleman deserves to be asked to become a Knight. Your new slate of officers should be formulated and presented to the Council. Nominations must be announced at three separate meetings before elections are held. I am looking forward to the continued success of Mother Seton Council and its growth in membership and service to our Church and Order. Vivat Jesus 1

The family is active in parish and school activities. Emmanuel is a Catechist, who teaches religious education to 8 th grade and RCIA classes. He is a member of the Saint Matthias Church African choir. Emmanuel is also our council's Pro Life chairman. The family has two young children. Mother Seton Council of the Knights of Columbus takes this opportunity to recognize the ongoing service and the dedication of this family. We thank you for all you do for our parish and community. We look forward to and encourage full participation in the rituals and celebrations of the season. Common saints and feast days we commemorate in the month of April are: Saint George (23), Saint Mark (25), and Saint Catherine of Sienna (29). The Church will also celebrate the canonization of two new saints on Divine Mercy Sunday (27) Saint John Paul II and Saint John XXIII. 3 Council Activities Raymond Ihegbe, PGK Next month the Council members will be called upon to volunteer at Elizabeth Seton High School graduation. Please make yourself available for this activity which is usually held on the Tuesday after Memorial Day at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. We have participated as ushers for over 30 years. Specific details will be published in next month s newsletter edition. Thank you in advance for your support. Knight of the Month John Murray This award is for the month of February John Murray is the recipient of the February 2014 Knight of the Month Award. John currently serves the Council as Financial Secretary (FS). He is intimately involved in just about every activity or committee in the Council. He performs his duties as FS flawlessly, but makes himself available to serve in other capacities. Whether it is the Christmas Party, Shrove Tuesday Dinner or assembling a team for the Rosary or a degree, he finds the time to help. John, thank you for your tireless efforts and congratulations on a job well done. You are an exemplary Mother Seton Knight. May God continue to bless you and your family in all you do! 5 Supreme Council News U.S. Bishops Designate Washington D.C. Location as John Paul II National Shrine Decree signed by Archbishop Kurtz, USCCB president The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) designated the Washington-based facility dedicated to Pope John Paul II as a national shrine. Beginning on Sunday, April 27, the day set by Pope Francis for Pope John Paul II s canonization, the shrine will be known as the Saint John Paul II National Shrine. It will mark the occasion with liturgical celebrations, a reception, and a gathering of young people. The American bishops are pleased to reflect the love of Catholics in America for John Paul II by designating this location a national shrine, said Louisville Archbishop Joseph Kurtz, who signed the bishops decree today as USCCB president. This national shrine is truly America s fitting tribute and remembrance of his legacy. The Knights of Columbus took ownership of the facility in 2011 to create a shrine dedicated to John Paul II and his contributions to the Church and society. Currently known as the Blessed John Paul II Shrine, it is located on the site of the former John Paul II Cultural Center at 3900 Harewood Road in northeast Washington. Pope John Paul II shaped an entire generation of Catholics, and the shrine serves to remind people throughout this country of his saintly life, and of his call to holiness for each of us, said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. This shrine gives us the opportunity and privilege of continuing Pope John Paul II s mission of the new evangelization for future generations of Catholics and we gladly accept it. Cardinal Donald Wuerl, archbishop of Washington, blessed the Knights initiative and declared the site an archdiocesan shrine in

6 Pope John Paul visited Washington and was an important force for good in America, so we are particularly honored to have this saint s national shrine here and to be one of the first places of worship in the world to bear his name, said Cardinal Wuerl. In its three years as a local shrine, it has also become a place of pilgrimage and prayer, attracting people from far beyond this city. An inspiring centerpiece of the shrine will be a relic consisting of a vial of John Paul II s blood, entrusted to the Knights of Columbus by Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz, archbishop of Kraków and longtime personal secretary to John Paul II. The shrine s lower level will feature a 16,000-square-foot permanent exhibition on the pope s life and teaching slated to open later this year. The main floor will be converted into a church and the current chapel will serve as a reliquary chapel. Both will feature floor-to-ceiling mosaics. As the premier site dedicated to Pope John Paul II in the United States, we are grateful that the U.S. bishops have elevated our status to a national shrine and we look forward to welcoming pilgrims to this place of prayer, said shrine Executive Director Patrick Kelly.
