1 St. Barnabas Episcopal Church Newsletter July 2014 Parish and Vestry News The Holy Spirit and tongues of fire arrived at St. Barnabas on Pentecost Sunday (June 8). Thanks to Deacon Laurel and a band of merry decorators, the church was adorned with red, yellow and orange balloons and streamers to welcome the Holy Spirit and to celebrate the baptism of Vivian Allard McNeely. The baptism was a bittersweet affair, as we also had to bid farewell to Vivian and her moms (Heather and Kim) due to their move to Boise. The same day we also said goodbye to John King, he also moved to Boise we re investigating several conspiracy theories regarding the Gem State stealing our people. The St. Barnabas family is sorry to lose all four of these great people and we wish them great success in their new homes. After the service, the congregation was treated to six different varieties of chili provided by Keith Enos, David Piacente, Shannon Reel, Susan Mahon, Kris Lunda, and Carolyn Nelson. The winner was determined by applause. In a close vote, our judge, Willy Hunnicutt, determined that Kris s chili received the most applause, she was rewarded with 12-months of bragging rights and the opportunity to choose the hymns for an upcoming Sunday service. Many thanks go out to the chili chefs and to Cathie Dainton Piacente and her helpers for getting everything set up and cleaned up. Congratulations to all for a job well done! Keith was the only chef who was willing to part with his recipe Keith s Easy Chili: Brown 2 lbs. ground beef over medium heat for 10 min. in 1 TB vegetable oil; drain off most of the fat. Add 2-3 TB Chili Powder, 1 tsp. garlic, 1 tsp. salt and ½ tsp pepper and cayenne pepper to taste, plus 1 chopped onion and 1 chopped red bell pepper. Cook, stirring, 5 minutes. Add 3 cups water, 1 26 oz. can tomato puree and 1 26-oz. can chopped tomatoes, plus 2 15 oz. cans kidney beans. Simmer over low heat for 2-3 hours at least!! ADOPT-A-BILL off to a great start! We have received almost $3,000 in pledges to cover several of our financial obligations, including landscaping, janitorial supplies, utilities, professional fees, advertising and website fees, nursery personnel costs and high priority expenses. As we continue our effort to balance the budget, such contributions are a vital component in our success it s not too late to adopt your own bill, hurry before supplies run out! When you submit a check for adopt-a-bill, please make a notation to that effect on your check so that it can be coded to the proper account thanks!

2 THANK YOU TO THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE ALREADY ADOPTED A BILL! Chris Battista, Eva and Jeff Calcagno, Erin Fogg, Mae and Gary Orendorff, Melissa and Sean Wall, Bert and Frank Wiggins, Betty Woerner, Maxine Selberg, Leslie Frewing, and Carolyn Williams. THANK YOU!!!!! Stump the Priest Question: What is a sacrament and what are the sacraments of the Episcopal Church? Answer: Another great question! According the Catechism in the Book of Common Prayer (p. 857), The sacraments are outward and visible signs of inward and spiritual grace, given by Christ as sure and certain means by which we receive that grace. In other words, we participate in the sacraments to publicly declare the reality of Christ s presence in our hearts, minds and souls. As for the particular sacraments of the church, there are two primary ones, Holy Baptism and The Holy Eucharist. The other sacramental rites (as the BCP refers to them) are Confirmation, Ordination, Holy Matrimony, Reconciliation of the Penitent, and Unction. While the first three are probably familiar to everyone, the last two may be less familiar. Reconciliation of the Penitent is an opportunity sit with a priest in private, confess one s sins and receive absolution and pardon. We share in the General Confession every Sunday (except during the Easter Season) and that is a full and sufficient form of confession and absolution, but some people may desire a more personal and intimate confession. Anyone who desires to make a private confession is invited to call Fr. Sean to schedule confession. The liturgy for Reconciliation of the Penitent begins on page 447 of the BCP. Unction is the rite of anointing the sick with oil, or the laying on of hands, by which God's grace is given for the healing of spirit, mind, and body (BCP p. 861). Unction is appropriate for anyone who desires the comfort of prayers due to ill health of mind or body, or spiritual discontent. The liturgy for Ministration to the Sick begins on page 453 of the BCP. In the Episcopal Church, we do not have a sacrament of Last Rites, however, Extreme Unction is available to a person who is near death, the liturgy for Ministration at the Time of Death begins on page 462. Fr. Sean is always available to visit the sick and dying, if your family is in crisis please call him. The liturgies in the Prayer Book can be used as much or as little as desired by the sick and dying, they are not required during a visit. If you want to stump the priest, new questions are always welcome, just send them to Fr Sean. The Grauer Back-To-School drive kicked off last week and will continue through July. While it seems early, now is the time to ensure underprivileged students in the area are outfitted for the first day of school. There is a box placed in the narthex for donations.

3 SAFE Church training (Safeguarding God s Children) to be offered September 14 at 12:30-5:00 PM in Grafe Hall. Per the Diocese of Oregon website, Safeguarding God s Children training is required for all members of the clergy, all paid employees, all wardens and vestry members, and all volunteers (age 16 and over) who work with children and youth. Volunteers age are welcome to attend it accompanied by a parent. We do not recommend this training for children under 12. Please call Cathie in the church office to sign-up. There is a $10 class fee, assistance is available for offsetting the cost, please see Fr. Sean for further details. Knitting classes are coming this fall to St. Barnabas! All parish men and women, girls and boys, over the age of 12 are invited to enroll. The classes will be taught by Cathy Stermer (Sandy Hunnicutt s sister-in-law) who has taught knitting professionally for many years. The classes can include students at any level of experience, absolute beginners and those working on a project or new stitch. Classes will be on Monday evenings. More detailed information and sign up will be available in early September. Contact Sandy for more information Buildings and Grounds: Much headway has been made in clipping back the overgrown bushes. Look and enjoy the progress. Now what to do? I suggest help trimming areas that contain branches that rest on the side of each of the buildings. The gap between the branches and walls should be 18 to 24 inches. Volunteers should prune no higher than 4 feet up the wall[s]; therefore, ladders are not required. Pile clippings in a manner where they can be removed after a 1 week drying period. Chris Battista, Junior Warden/Buildings and Grounds Second Sunday Yard Work. July 13 th, we will be focusing on trimming bushes away from the church in anticipation of future painting. If we trim, the paint will come. Thanks, Leslie Frewing Big Brothers Big Sisters and Stephen's Creek Crossing are collaborating on a project to bring positive adult mentors to the middle school youth. This will be a "site-based program" which means the Bigs and Littles will meet at the Stephen's Creek Crossing Opportunity Community Center weekly on Thursday evenings (6:00-7:00 pm) for a snack and activity. Activities will include swimming, climbing and open gym at the MJCC across the street, disc golf at the nearby course, board games and fun at the playground or gardens at Stephen's Creek Crossing. An informational meeting/training for people who want to be big brothers or big sisters is scheduled for Tuesday, July 8, 5:30-8:30 at Hillsdale Community Church. Anyone from St B s who might be interested is most welcome - there is no obligation to those who attend this meeting. Notes from the Women of St. Barnabas: The Women of St. Barnabas met on Monday June 23 rd and discussed the events we hosted the past two months and also upcoming events. In recapping the Rummage Sale, Leslie Coefield has graciously crowned herself "Queen of Rummage". She had such a great time chairing for the first time that she is charged and ready to go for next year to make it even bigger and better. A big thanks goes out to Leslie and her terrific team of helpers. Next year s rummage sale is schedule for May 1-2. If you hear of anyone spring-cleaning or moving let them know we want their stuff. Call Leslie with questions.

4 Graduation Sunday was a wonderful celebration honoring our members who graduated from 8th grade, high school, and college. Fr. Sean's blessing during the service and the laying on of hands at the peace moved all of us. What a wonderful community we share at St. Barnabas. The celebration continued at coffee hour hosted by the WoSB. The Father's Day breakfast was hosted by the women, giving the usual group of hard working men the day off. So many people stepped forward to lend a hand in preparation, serving, and clean up. We do food well at St. Barnabas and if anyone left hungry I really don t know what to say. We were lucky to have Jack help us prepare the meal. I think we have a chef in the works. Then at clean up I was lucky enough to have Joe for a helper. It was great one on one time. We have some great kids here with us. I know I forget in my business to take a moment to share with the children. This was special and reminded me we all need to take that moment. They are our future - lets help them all. Under new business we took a look at the adopt-a-bill items and voted to take on the nursery staffing budget. We are lucky to have a comfortable space for families with small children. Pray that we fill it with little angels. Kay Martin will deliver the cleaning and personal hygiene items to West Women's and Children s Shelter following 4th of July. There is still time to donate. Gift cards are always welcome as well, Target and Fred Meyer are preferred. Thank you to all who placed things under the tree. We will be collecting again in December. Each time Kay goes down their shelves are bare. They so appreciate our help. July is our annual Grauer Back-To-School drive. This is a project the women have participated in for many, many years. This organization helps to outfit 600 kids for a great start to a new school year. There is a box placed in the narthex for donations. Lists of items needed are in the manila envelope with the school bus on it on the outside of the donation box. Besides the basic school supplies they are also looking for athletic shoes, socks, warm coats, and underwear. Mae Orendorff and Sheila Dougherty are heading up this project so if you have any questions or would like to make a monetary donation please see them. Checks can be made out to Grauer Back To School Project. The deadline for donations is July 28 th. Distribution day is Saturday August 9 th from 8:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 6835 SW 46 th Avenue. If you are interested in volunteering that day please let either Mae or Sheila know. Thanking you all ahead of time for your support. Sunday September 7 th is our visit from the Bishop. This will also be our annual picnic. The women will host but will need everyone to help by signing up in Grafe Hall for a food item to bring. The sign up will be posted shortly.
