2 January 13, 2019 The Baptism of the Lord Date and Time Location Intention John answered them all, I baptize you with water; but he who is mightier than I is coming he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit... (Luke 3:16) The Catholic Catechism states that Jesus immersion in the water is a sign for all human beings of the need to die to themselves to do God s will. In other words, as baptized Catholics there is only one gift that we need to give to Jesus the gift of ourselves. Surrender yourself to God, place your trust in Him and allow the Holy Spirit to work through you for the greater glory of God. From the Pastor ORDINARY TIME Besides the time of the year that have their own distinctive character, there remains in the yearly cycle thirty-three or thirty-four weeks in which no particular aspect of the mystery of Christ is celebrated, but rather the mystery of Christ itself is honored in its fullness, especially on Sundays. This period is known as Ordinary Time (Universal Norms, 43). The word ordinary is used because we use ordinal numbers to count the Sundays and the weeks. This year, the first part of Ordinary Time begins Monday, January 14, and continues to Tuesday, March 5, the day before Ash Wednesday. It resumes on Monday, June 9, the day after Pentecost. WARM WELCOME to seminarians Nathan Hansen, Tanner Thooft, Joshua Bot and James Herzog who will be observing in the Holy Cross Area Faith Community and getting acquainted with other parishes in the diocese until January 18. Please continue to pray for vocations. WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY is January 18-25, to coincide with the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul. Next Sunday everyone is invited to join Bishop LeVoir for the Ecumenical Prayer Service for Christian Unity at 3:00 P.M. in Willmar. A reception will follow. See the posters for full details. ROE V WADE Tuesday, January 22, marks the 46th anniversary of the Roe V Wade decision legalizing abortion in our country. Since the 1973 decision, over 60 million babies have been killed in the womb in our country. The U.S. Bishops have designated this day as a Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children. Scripture reminds us to seek God s help, and as people of faith, we believe our prayers are heard. As individuals we are called to observe this day through prayer, fasting and/or giving alms. We continue to speak out and pray for the protection and safeguarding of all human life from the moment of conception to natural death. There is an opportunity to stand up, work and pray for the protection of the unborn by participating in the annual March for Life at the State Capitol in St. Paul. To reserve a seat on the coach bus, please call the Cathedral office ( ) today. For full information see the AFC section of the bulletin.
