8 1) Word heed defined. lit., to hold to, signifies to turn to, turn one s attention to; hence, to give heed (Vine, p. 551). Thayer says, to turn the mind to, attend to, be attentive : to a person or thing, (p. 546). He should inquire of himself: Am I able to keep this congregation in the faith? Am I capable of performing my duties in the eldership in a manner to please God? Am I able to act impartially toward each member of this congregation? To answer these questions honestly will help him to perform his work in an acceptable manner (H.E. Philips, Scriptural Elders And Deacons, p. 192).

9 2) Each member is examine himself. Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?--unless indeed you are disqualified (2 Corinthians 13:5).

10 3) To take heed to his house. one who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence (for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?) (1 Timothy 3:4,5).

11 4) Must heed his beliefs & practices. For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves. Therefore watch, and remember that for three years I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with tears (Acts 20:29-31).

15 1) Requirement of an effective leader. Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct (Hebrews 13:7). that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises (Hebrews 6:12).

A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach (1 Timothy 3:2). holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict (Titus 1:9). These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so (Acts 17:11).

Ezek. 14:5); apostasy is at issue (TDNT). AMG says, perverted or perverse, corrupt, vicious.

23 3) Stop the mouths of false teachers. holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict. For there are many insubordinate, both idle talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole households, teaching things which they ought not, for the sake of dishonest gain (Titus 1:9-11).

24 4) Note & avoid teachers of error. Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them (Romans 16:17).

28 1) Are to admonish the church. And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you (1 Thessalonians 5:12). Admonish The verb means to impart understanding, to set right, to lay on the heart. The stress is on influencing not merely the intellect but the will and disposition. The word thus acquires such senses as to admonish, to warn, to remind, and to correct. It describes a basic means of education (TDNT).

29 2) To pray for the sick. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven (James 5:14,15).

30 3) To support the weak. Yes, you yourselves know that these hands have provided for my necessities, and for those who were with me. I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, It is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:34,35).

And when they had come to Jerusalem, they were received by the church and the apostles and the elders; and they reported all things that God had done with them Now the apostles and elders came together to consider this matter Then it pleased the apostles and elders, with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas, namely, Judas who was also named Barsabas, and Silas, leading men among the brethren (Acts 15:4,6,22).
