Brad Pelzel Date: 4 February 2019 Re: February 21 Clergy Day Brothers, We are having a special Clergy Day on February 21, 2019 at the Sacred Heart Church parish center in Ida Grove. We will gather beginning at 9:30 AM and the meeting will begin at 10:00 AM. It is imperative that all of our clergy attend. If you already have something scheduled/planned for that day, we would ask you to do your best to move that conflict so you can attend. If you have vacation or other plans, contact me personally to let me know why you cannot attend. DO NOT schedule a funeral for this day! Deacons, we realize that many of you work, but if possible, it would be very beneficial if you would find a way to be in attendance. Among the important topics that day will be what to preach about the weekend of February at all Masses. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

3 Office of the Vicar General To: All Priests, Deacons and Parish Staff From: Father Brad Pelzel Date: 6 February 2019 Re: Security We want to make you aware of a recent onslaught of phishing s, which seem to be targeting the accounts of our priests and clergy. These s appear to come from a priest or someone that we know, but on closer examination, the is not from them. Phishing is an online scam where a hacker or cyber-criminal, posing as a trusted company or person we know, using to attempt to gain access to our personal or sensitive information like passwords, credit card numbers, bank account information, etc., and then use it in a malicious way. By contrast, spam is unsolicited from a third party usually trying sell you something. Many of these unwanted spam s end up in your Junk folder or the Outlook Quarantine. Sometimes s that we do want from people or companies we know also end up getting filtered out as junk mail. If you are using your diocesan account, you can contact our information technology provider, Thompson Innovation, and ask that they approve the sender. Despite their efforts, because of how some s are sent, Thompson Innovation isn t always able keep them from being filtered or quarantined. Thompson Innovation works hard to keep spam and phishing s from reaching us through our diocesan accounts. However, keep in mind that hackers are very creative in finding new ways to trick you into gaining access. We must all be vigilant to keep our information safe. Here are some red flags to help you detect these types of malicious s: The communication you receive is unexpected or comes from someone you rarely if ever communicate with. The has a sense of urgency or asks you to act immediately.

4 Page 2 The content may be brief or vague, asking you to contact them or do something, like click on an attachment or link. It may play on your emotions by asking for your help. The contains grammatical and spelling errors, or just doesn t look right. Again, remember that the sender s address may look close to the person s that you know, or the hacker may have even cloned the senders address so that their message appears to legitimate. Hackers will often use a free account and tweak the address slightly, or sometimes the address contains random gibberish. Do not reply to the sender of a suspicious , and more importantly, do not click into any attachments or internet links. Also, do not call any phone numbers provided in the e- mail. If you are concerned and want to contact the person who supposedly sent the e- mail, use a phone number that you know. If you do reply or click into a link or attachment on and and suspect that your account has been compromised, change your password immediately. You can also contact your IT department, or in the case of your diocesan , contact Thompson Innovation at If you act quickly, you may be able to minimize the harm a malicious third-party can do.

Shane Deman Director, Office of Vocations Subject: First Communion Congratulations Cards from Bishop Nickless/ Teen Confession Guides New Year greetings from the Vocation Office! As we anticipate the arrival of springtime weather, so too are we looking forward to the sacramental celebrations that will be taking place in your parishes in the coming months. Every year Bishop Nickless gives a congratulatory card to the second-graders of the Diocese as they receive their First Holy Communion. To facilitate this, we are asking each parish to send to the Vocations Office the count of their second-graders (Catholic School and Religious Ed.) who will be receiving their First Holy Communion this spring. Pastors, if you oversee a cluster, please include all your parishes! Taking care of this now enables us to order and have the cards prepared for you so they can be included with your second-graders First Communion certificate. The cards are available in English or in Spanish. Please indicate how many you will need of each. Subject: A Practical Guide to Confession For a couple of years now, the Vocation Office has made available a new Confession Guide for Teenagers. We have replenished our supply and more guides are available as we near the Lenten Season. They are printed in English and Spanish. Let us know the amount you would like and we ll get them packaged up for you. We are planning on delivering both the Confession Guides and First Communion cards during our Presbyteral Meeting on Feb. 21, If you need your guides or cards prior to that day, please let me know. 8 Office of Worship To: Priests and Deacons From: Father Brent Lingle Date: 5 February 2019 Re: New Mandate and Commission for EMHC: Northeast and Southeast Deaneries According to the policy for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and Universal Law, the Bishop can grant a mandate of three years for someone to serve as an EMHC. At the end of the three-year term each EMHC needs to receive a new mandate and commissioning. Over the past several years we have done this by deanery on a rotational basis. This year it is time for the Northeast and Southeast deanery EMHCs to be recommissioned. Prior to commissioning it is recommended to offer continuing catechesis and training to these ministers. Please send the information to Grace Zavala for any current and new EMHC in your parishes that you want to receive the mandate and commissioning to gracez@scdiocese.org.
