Priests on one side and Deacons & Spouses on the other. Please grab your name card and place it on your table. 3 To: Pastors, Priests and Deacons From: Patty Lansink Date: May 2, 2018 Re: Bishop s Dinner for Catholic Schools Awards Each year, the Bishop s Dinner for Catholic Schools serves not only as the single largest fundraiser for all sixteen Catholic school systems in our diocese but also as an opportunity to honor and recognize those teachers and school support staff who are going above and beyond their regular call of duty. The two awards and their nomination criteria include: Excellence in Education Award (Specifically For Teachers) A teacher who emphasizes Catholic identity in the classroom regardless of subject matter. Faith remains the cornerstone of the classroom and ongoing faith formation is emphasized. A teacher who strives endlessly for academic excellence and achievement while incorporating new & innovative teaching strategies in the classroom. A teacher who has earned the respect of peers, students and/or parents by fostering an atmosphere of collaboration and teamwork. Serves as a role model to fellow teachers as well as students. A teacher who is a witness of his or her faith in his or her professional and personal life. A teacher who promotes the mission of the school both on and off the job. contributes time, talent and treasure and exhibits a true passion for the school. A teacher in a Catholic school of the Diocese of Sioux City for at least 5 consecutive years at the time of nomination and remains employed at the time of the Bishop s Dinner when award is given. The Good Shepherd Award (For school administrators & all other school employees) A school employee who is admired, respected and held in high regard by fellow peers, students and parents. Routinely goes above and beyond the call of duty enthusiastically promoting the mission of the school. A school employee who demonstrates a true passion for the job. Ready and willing to help at a moment s notice. Any employee in a Catholic school of the Diocese of Sioux City for at least five consecutive years at the time of nomination and remains employed at the time of the Bishop s Dinner when award is given. I would like to invite you to nominate those outstanding individuals in your school that are doing exceptional work and having a positive impact on those around them. 7 DIOCESE OF SIOUX CITY Committee for the Continuing Formation of Priests 1 May 2018 Dear Brother Priests, Our triennial priests' retreat which is schedule for Monday Thursday, October 15-18, at The Benedict Center, Schuyler, NE, will be here before we know it. Our retreat master will be Abbot Benedict Neenan of Conception Abbey; I have attached his bio from Conception's webpage. All active priests are expected to attend. If an active priest is unable to attend, he is to contact one of our VGs or Bishop Nickless. After the new fiscal year begins, parishes will be invoiced for the annual $400 retreat stipend to cover the expenses of this retreat. Retired priests are welcome to attend. To inform me of your plan to attend, please me, t.a.friedrichsen@gmail.com or call/text me on my cell ( ); please do not burden my staff with that. I will submit your names to Grace Zavala so that she can create a purchase order for your retreat stipend from the funds for continuing formation of priests. A few final items: Overflow: there are 58 rooms available at the Benedict Center itself. Please let me know if you would be willing to stay in Schuyler at a local hotel. Physical Needs: if you have any physical needs in terms of the room, please let me know; I will see what accommodations are available. 8 Above is the link on Catholicglobe.org for information on World Youth Day. It will be here before you know it! The Catholic Globe is collaborating with Canterbury Pilgrimages on this trip. Posters and brochures should be on display in our churches. Here is the direct link for reservations: Those of you who have participated in agency tours may be aware that for every 10 pilgrims signed up, one complimentary tour is offered. You may see that as a perk to be involved in this. COST: The initial deposit of $450 is due with registration. The balance is due Nov. 7. A $3,000-plus price tag might be a lot for a young person, so fundraising may be needed. Also, consider asking the local Knights of Columbus or Catholic Daughters or other service group to assist with offsetting the cost. Grandparents might see value in this and could help. WHY GO: According to Father Patrick Behm of Fort Dodge, who attended World Youth Day in Poland in 2016, the best part of attending World Youth Day has been seeing the universality of the Catholic Church. It always amazes me that people from all over the world can be brought together by the common bond of being united in the Body of Christ. WHO CAN GO: Anyone, but to attend WYD activities, the recommended ages are CHAPERONES: Father David Esquiliano is the chaplain for the trip but not a chaperone. Additionally, the tour company provides a guide, but not a chaperone. Anyone under the age of 18 will need a chaperone. We will have those in place once registrations start to come in. INFORMATION MEETING: I would be willing to host an informational meeting in the next two months at a convenient site to answer questions. Just let me know. Janette s talk will be recorded, more information will be available at the event. Since the day is designed to speak to the hearts of women, free of distractions, it is respectfully requested that young children not be in attendance. Although a cradle Catholic, Janette Howe drifted from the Faith for several years. She and her husband, Jeff, found themselves in the Protestant world for ten years and raised their family in this setting. She had a powerful experience in front of the Blessed Sacrament in 1998 and Our Lord wooed her Home to the Faith. Then with grace upon grace, each one in the family found their way to the Church. Her son is now a Catholic priest. She is known to often say with great zeal, "As Catholics we truly live the richest life!" Janette has a great love of the sacramental life, and an ever-deepening love of the holy Mass and the holy priesthood
