3 DIOCESE OF SIOUX CITY Office of Worship Memo To: All Priests From: Fr. Lingle Date: 3/6/2019 Re: Chrism Mass As we journey deeper into the Season of Lent, it is time again to think about our celebration of the Chrism Mass. It will be celebrated at the Cathedral of the Epiphany at 2:00pm on Thursday, April 11, The Chrism Mass is one of the principal expressions of the fullness of the Bishop s priesthood and signifies the close unity of the Priests with him (Roman Pontifical). I hope that all of you will make it a priority to attend. Bishop Nickless would like you to encourage your parish staff and parishioners that can attend to do so, but especially your confirmation students and RCIA participants. Please request only the amount of oil you think you will need for the celebration of the sacraments in your parishes for the year ahead. This helps us to eliminate excess oil that must then be properly disposed of at the end of the year. To avoid any confusion or problems with the holy oils, you will be responsible, as the priest, to pick up your oils after the Mass in the conference room in the basement of the Cathedral. If you are unable, or wish to designate someone else, please indicate this on the Oil Order Form. Otherwise, you are expected to pick them up. Priests will vest in the gym of the Epiphany Center and should bring an alb. Chasubles and stoles will be provided. We will line up at 1:45pm and be ready to begin the procession into the Cathedral at 2:00pm. I have included information regarding the disposal of old holy oil, as well as the texts for the presentation of the oils in the parish. If you have any questions about this liturgy, you may contact the Office of Worship at brentl@scdiocese.org or (712) Please RSVP your attendance and submit your oil orders to Grace Zavala by Monday, March 25, 2018, to gracez@scdiocese.org.

4 DIOCESE OF SIOUX CITY Office of Worship SACRED CHRISM MASS THURSDAY, APRIL 11, 2019, 2:00 PM CATHEDRAL OF THE EPIPHANY OIL REQUEST Please submit the number of bottles (1 oz. each) you will need for each type of oil to #1 Parish Name & City: #2 Parish Name & City: #3 Parish Name & City: #4 Parish Name & City: #5 Parish Name & City: #6 Parish Name & City: Oils will be given to the Pastor/Parochial Vicar of each parish. If you are unable to pick-up your sacred oils, please consider making arrangements with a brother priest or if you have a designated person to pick them up, please list their name here: Please be so kind to confirm your order has been submitted by Monday, March 25, If you have any questions, please contact Grace Zavala at gracez@scdiocese.org or

5 DISPOSING OF OLD HOLY OILS While the revised Code of Canon Law contains specifics on the use of the Holy Oils blessed by the diocesan bishop and distributed at the Chrism Mass, it does not contain explicit instructions for disposal of Holy Oils from the previous year which are being replaced. The Book of Blessings, Chapter 32, Order for the Blessing of a Repository for the Holy Oils, Introduction, paragraph 1127 states: Each year when the bishop blesses the oils and consecrates the chrism, the pastor should see that the old oils are properly disposed of by burning and that they are replaced by the newly blessed oils. Burning the old oils may be accomplished by burning them in the Easter Fire at the Easter Vigil Mass. It is not fitting that the Holy Oils be burned along with trash or other nonreligious refuse. An alternative to burning is burying the unused oils in a sacred place. A fitting place would be on the church grounds. This can be accomplished by digging an appropriate size trench along the foundation of the church. This trench should be at least 12 inches deep and of a size that the oils will not be evident on the surface after the trench is filled. There is no environmental concern as the oils and chrism essence are non petroleum base and will eventually be absorbed into the ground. If the quantity of oil is so large that burying them on the church ground is not feasible, then an alternative place to bury the oils is a Catholic cemetery near a statue which identifies the cemetery as Catholic or in the area where priests and religious people are buried. A corollary subject is the cleansing of the ambry vessels or other containers that contained the old oils before newly blessed oils are added. Ambry vessels and old containers should be cleansed with hot soapy water to dilute the olive oil and essence of chrism. This soapy water should be emptied into the sacrarium or emptied directly into the ground next to the church in a similar manner and location as recommended for burying old oils. After it appears that all traces of the old oils have been removed the ambry vessels and containers can be cleansed and dried in a normal fashion.

6 The Reception of the Holy Oils Blessed at the Chrism Mass Introduction 1. It is appropriate that the oil of the sick, the oil of catechumens, and the holy chrism, which are blessed by the bishop during the Chrism Mass, be presented to and received by the local parish community. The reception of the holy oils may take place at the Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday or on another day after the celebration of the Chrism Mass. 2. The oils should be reserved in a suitable repository in the sanctuary or near the baptismal font. 3. The oils, in suitable vessels, are carried in the procession of the gifts, before the bread and wine, by members of the assembly. 4. The oils are received by the priest and are then placed on a suitably prepared table in the sanctuary or in the repository where they will be reserved. 5. As each of the oils is presented, the following or other words may be used to explain the significance of the particular oil. 6. The people's response may be sung. At the beginning of the presentation of the gifts, the oils are carried forward one by one by a representative. Presenter of the Oil of the Sick: The oil of the sick. Priest: May the sick who are anointed with this oil experience the compassion of Christ and his saving love, in body and soul. The people may respond: Blessed be God forever. Presenter of the Oil of Catechumens: The oil of catechumens. Priest: Through anointing with this oil may our catechumens who are preparing to receive the savings waters of baptism be strengthened by Christ to resist the power of Satan and reject evil in all its forms. The people may respond: Blessed be God forever. Presenter of the Holy Chrism: The holy Chrism. Priest: Through anointing with this perfumed Chrism may children and adults, who are baptized and confirmed, and presbyters, who are ordained, experience the gracious gift of the Holy Spirit. The people may respond: Blessed be God forever. The bread and wine for the Eucharist are then received and the Mass continues in the usual way.
