2 Dear friends in Christ, As we enter into Holy Week today, let us resolve to walk with Jesus step by step and remember all God has done for us through his Son. Let us reflect upon these words of a Homily given by Pope Benedict: Dear brothers and sisters, may these days call forth two sentiments in particular: praise, after the example of those who welcomed Jesus into Jerusalem with their Hosanna!, and thanksgiving, because in this Holy Week the Lord Jesus will renew the greatest gift we could possibly imagine: he will give us his life, his body and his blood, his love. But we must respond worthily to so great a gift, that is to say, with the gift of ourselves, our time, our prayer, our entering into a profound communion of love with Christ who suffered, died and rose for us. The early Church Fathers saw a symbol of all this in the gesture of the people who followed Jesus on his entry into Jerusalem, the gesture of spreading out their coats before the Lord. Before Christ the Fathers said we must spread out our lives, ourselves, in an attitude of gratitude and adoration. As we conclude, let us listen once again to the words of one of these early Fathers, Saint Andrew, Bishop of Crete: So it is ourselves that we must spread under Christ s feet, not coats or lifeless branches or shoots of trees, matter which wastes away and delights the eye only for a few brief hours. But we have clothed ourselves with Christ s grace, or with the whole Christ... so let us spread ourselves like coats under his feet... let us offer not palm branches but the prizes of victory to the conqueror of death. Today let us, too, give voice with the children to that sacred chant, as we wave the spiritual branches of our soul: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, the King of Israel. Amen! POPE BENEDICT My prayer for us all this week is that our celebration of the Triduum may help us grow in Faith, Hope and Love! May God bless you and your families always! Fr. Johnson P.S. I am so grateful to welcome Fr. Heric back for Holy Week. It is really generous of him to take time out of his sabbatical to be with us at Holy Innocents for these celebrations. Please join me in expressing our appreciation for him. Have you looked at the back of the bulletin? Did you know the parish does not have to pay for the printing of this weekly bulletin? It is because of the generosity of our advertisers that this bulletin is printed by Catholic Printery at no cost to the parish. Please patronize these advertisers when you can and tell them you saw their ad in our bulletin! 3 Holy Innocents Food Pantry When you do your shopping, please remember the pantry and pick up one (or more) items to bring on Sunday. Especially needed this week are: canned chili, stews, meats, canned fruit, peanut butter, jams. We always need toilet paper and shampoo and tooth paste. Pantry Pig this week: $ Thanks!! What is that bell ringing at the end of Mass? If you forgot to bring something for the Food Pantry on Sunday, you can give some money for our shoppers to purchase needed items for the Pantry. Thanks! HI TIP: Together In Prayer Each month we focus on a local community concern and ask parishioners to commit to praying for 2 minutes each day specifically for that concern as well as for our church community. You can pray whenever and wherever you want. Ask and you will receive, said Jesus. Together we can do great things. March Let us pray for local City & County Government: for our elected & appointed officials, employees, and Council members; that they work with honesty for justice for everyone in our community, that they work for the common good, and that they plan well for the future of our cities & counties. St. Thomas More, patron of politicians, pray for us. Baptisms The celebration of the Sacrament of Baptism for infants is scheduled after the baptismal preparation for the parents are completed. Baptisms are normally celebrated at a Sunday Mass in the parish where the parents live. Adults (7-years or older) seeking baptism or confirmation are invited to inquire at the parish office for information about adult preparation. Marriage Couples seeking marriage in the Church are asked to contact the parish at least four months in advance of their proposed wedding date. For those with prior marriages, additional time may be required. Marriages are celebrated in the parish in which one of the Catholic parties lives. Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) Private confession is available on the 1st Sunday of the month between the 8 am and 10:30 am Masses. Confession is available on Saturdays at St. Jude s in Redmond from 4 to 4:30 pm. There are also communal reconciliation services with private confession during Advent and Lent. Fr. Heric is also available by appointment. Pastoral Care for the Sick & Dyin g In the case of serious illness or failing health due to old age, parishioners should ask the church for the Sacrament of Anointing. This sacrament is administered by a priest and is best celebrated communally at a Sunday Mass, but may be offered individually by appointment as necessary. When a parishioner is near death, they should receive Holy Communion, called the Sacrament of Viaticum (food for the journey). This sacrament can be administered by a priest, deacon, or a eucharistic minister. Bring Back Your Palms We will be burning last years palms in the Easter Fire, so bring yours back to be added to the others as we celebrate Easter. A Few Good (Old) Men - Young Men Needed Everyone at Holy Innocents is familiar with the quarterly Knights of Columbus pancake breakfasts. A few more know of their fish fries during lent, and their barbeque at the parish picnic. And many parishioners enjoy the Knight's annual crab feed seafood dinner. The proceeds from all these events find their way to assist various parish activities, and other worthy needs such as Project Rachel, seminarian expenses, wounded warriors, and the US military ordinate. But did you know that the Knights do more than scramble eggs and serve seafood to help fund good causes. Pictured above is George Doty, doing his best 'Ax Man' impression. George and five other Knights, four of whom now in their seventies, were busy splitting and loading enough timber last Saturday to fill two 10,000 lbs trailers for the St Vincent de Paul firewood program. The only thing missing on Saturday was a few more YOUNG men. So, if anyone is willing to skip the gym and do a little cross-training with an ax, or help man a power washer during a Springtime spruce up event, or who knows what Gail will think up, the Knights are ready to welcome both your help and ideas. There are lots of Knights in and around Holy Innocents, so give any one of us a holler if you want to learn more. (Ed O'Malley) DO YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THE ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY AND WHAT YOU WOULD DO AS A MEM- BER? If anyone is interested in learning what a member of St. Vincent de Paul does, or is interested in possibly joining our Holy Innocents Conference, please consider attending the next Ozanam Orientation. It is scheduled for Saturday, April 7, 2018 at Holy Family Parish in Kirkland from 8:30 am - 12:30 pm. The address is th Ave. NE, Kirkland. It's a perfect opportunity to ask questions and learn about this world-wide organization. The orientation will cover the key elements of the Vincentian Ministry including our heritage, organization, spirituality and engaging those we serve. Check Out the Display in the Narthex There are a number of pamphlets and CD s about our Catholic faith available in the narthex. Consider choosing one to purchase and put your donation in the box.. LENT: There are also various Lenten materials for you to take if you wish: free to a good home!
4 Stewardship is a Way of Life Stewardship Bulletin Reflection March 25 Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion IS 50: 4-7; PS 22: 8-9, 17-20, 23-24; PHIL 2: 6-11, MK 14: 1 15: 47 In his letter to the Philippians, our Second Reading on this Palm Sunday, St. Paul writes, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Everything we hear today and during Holy Week relates to this statement. For some 2,000 years scholars and theologians have debated what the phrase emptied himself means. As is sometimes the case, in the midst of these debates and discussions they lose focus of what is really Paul s point and teaching perhaps. One of the things Paul might be trying to get us to think about is emptying ourselves to a certain extent. If you have ever been on a retreat or been part of a spiritual exercise, you may be encouraged to empty yourself so you are prepared to in reality add something. Jesus gave much up to be the Son of Man. At this point in our Lenten journey, we need to grasp that He gave up His life so that we might have life. That is what should be on our minds as we hear the Passion today and as we continue and complete our own preparation for Christ s resurrection on Easter. Have you ever heard someone say about someone else He (or she) is so full of himself (or herself)? Jesus was not full of Himself. He emptied Himself, and that is something we, too, must strive to do to be His disciple. From: Rice Bowls Reflection PALM SUNDAY ENCOUNTER OUR NEIGHBORS We encounter Jesus this week in Jerusalem, a community he knew well. We prayerfully enter our own communities too, encountering those who are hungry and thirsty, those who need our help. How does our Lenten journey motivate us to serve those we meet in our daily lives? Visit crsricebowl.org for more **A special way to return your Rice Bowl this year We invite you to consider returning your Rice Bowl at the this week s Holy Thursday Liturgy. Our CRS Ambassadors will be organizing the Rice Bowls to be included in our offertory procession during this very special Liturgy. Divine Mercy Chaplet Sunday April 8, 2018, at 3:00 pm There will be the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, 15 minutes of quiet reflection, praying of the chaplet, and a litany of special blessings. The chaplet is the culmination of the 9-day Divine Mercy Novena which starts on Good Friday. This is a special way to celebrate the octave of Easter by coming together in a moment of spiritfilled, powerful prayer. If you have any questions please call the parish office at (425) , or Norita Barroga- Hulett at musicmin@holyinn.org. 4 Things for Kids to Look for today on Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord Holy Week kicks off with Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord. First we hear about Jesus king-like entry into the holy city of Jerusalem... on a donkey? Not a very kingly way to ride, but that s Jesus point: he is a new kind of king, the King of Peace foretold by the prophets. Then we hear a long reading about the Last Supper, and Jesus Passion. Look for: 1. Red vestments. Because we hear the Passion today, the priest wears red vestments. Red is the symbol of martyrs, of whom Christ is the prototype. 2. Procession before Mass. In most places, people will gather before Mass to bless palm branches and hear the story of Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem from the Gospel of Matthew. Then that triumphant entry is re-enacted as the people process into the church singing a song of praise and waving palm branches. 3. Palms, a symbol of victory. In most places, palm branches are distributed to the assembly before Mass. In the ancient world, palms were symbols of victory, given to athletes, military leaders, and kings. If we are waving palm branches, what role do we assume from the Gospel reading? 4. We hear the Passion from the Gospel of Matthew. We hear a very long Gospel reading of the Passion that is, the suffering and death of Jesus Christ. Usually, the Passion is read by several different readers; the assembly may assume the role of the crowd demanding Jesus death. How does it make you feel to shout, Crucify him!? What is the Church saying by casting us in the role of Jesus persecutors? From: Check out more ways to engage your children during the Holy Week Liturgies by going to Peanut Butter and Grace at Littlest Disciples and the F.U.T.U.R.E Group No gatherings next Sunday April 1st Happy Easter No gatherings Sunday April 8th Spring Break See you back on Sunday April 15th!
