2 ST. ANTHONY S CHURCH 8 th Sunday in Ordinary Time A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good, but an evil person out of the store of evil produces evil (Jesus Christ) My dear brothers and sisters, this Sunday, Jesus reminds us of the necessity to be good. We must always produce good fruit by doing good words. He instructs us that before we notice the splinter in our brother s eye, we must first focus on the wooden beam in our own eyes. What does Jesus want us to do? Jesus continues to remind us that we must love everyone around us. Remember last Sunday, Jesus commanded us to love our enemies, to do good to those who hate us and to pray for those who persecute us. He tells us to live in peace with everyone. We cannot just be selective when it comes to the people whom we should love or be good to. My dear brothers and sisters I truly believe, that Jesus is preparing us for the Season of Lent. How many of us are ready for Lent? (This coming Wednesday, March 6 is Ash Wednesday. It marks the beginning of our Lenten journey. I would like to share with you the schedule of our masses: 7 and 8am, 12 noon and 7pm. We will be having a Prayer Service with Distribution of Ashes at 4 pm. I remind you also of a special collection on Ash Wednesday for the Holy Land. Let us begin our Lenten journey by truly observing the disciplines of Fasting, Almsgiving and Prayer. We always asked ourselves, What will I give up for Lent? I like what Dennis Londono said in his Facebook account. He said, I do not think of what I will give up for Lent, rather I think of what I can do to grow in my holiness and my relationship with God. He shared that he will devote more time for prayer and reading Spiritual books. We can do same thing. Let us not only think of what we are sacrificing but also, what can we do to grow in holiness. Let us reflect on how we can show our love for God and for others daily. Our Responsorial Psalm is a reminder for us to give thanks to God. We truly have a lot of reasons to give thanks to God. We need to thank God for the gift of our life, for our family, friends and parish family for our good health, our job, our homes, our car, our bank account I am sure we can add more to this list. Let use this time for Lent as a time to offer God our thanksgiving for all He has given to us. St. Paul in his 1 st Letter to the Corinthians says, The sting of death is sin and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Let us thank God for the death and resurrection of Jesus that destroyed the power of sin and death. We must also continue to live in God s grace rather than sin. This week, the 1 st Reading is from the Book of Sirach, and it talks about the gift of wisdom to be able to do what is good and right. I truly believe we need to ask God to grant us the gift of wisdom so that we may always do what is good and right. Let us strive to be good examples to others especially to the children in our care. I asked you to keep in your prayers our children in CCD, especially our Confirmation class who just had their Retreat yesterday (3/2/19). Please also offer your prayers for our Communion class who will have their Retreat this coming Saturday (3/9/19). I would encourage the women in our parish to attend the Women s Conference at Seton Hall University this coming Saturday, March 9 from 8 am to 4 pm. Then, I encourage the men in our parish to attend the Men s Conference at Seton Hall University on March 16, (Saturday) from 8 am to 4 pm. Both conferences will end with Mass at 4 pm that is good for your Sunday obligation. Please mark your calendar also on March 21, Thursday at 7 pm at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, our Archbishop, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin is leading again another night of Prayer for Healing for the Clergy Abuse in our Archdiocese. PRAYER God our Father, we thank you for your reminder and call for us to be your good and faithful disciples. Give us your wisdom so that we may do always what is good and right. This we pray in Jesus Name. Amen. Fr. Dave BELLEVILLE, NEW JERSEY Parish Registrations New parishioners are most welcome at Saint Anthony s. In order to serve you better it is important that you register. Please make us your official parish home by taking a few moments to register. Our regular parishioners, if you are not registered, please take a registration form and fill it out. Registration forms will be found in the front and in the back of the church. Please take the form home or fill out in church and place in the collection basket. The reason for registering is a very important one, if you are asked to become a godparent, a sponsor or a witness for a marriage, or confirmation, we cannot give you a letter of eligibility unless you are registered. St. Peter s Food Pantry St. Peter s is asking for cereal, peanut butter, jelly and macaroni & cheese. They really need anything that you can donate. They also want to thank all of our parishioners for all that you do for their Food bank. ARCHDIOCESE OF NEWARK 2018 LENTEN REGULATIONS 1. The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence. On a day of Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of Abstinence. 2. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast & Abstinence Substantially, or as a whole, is a serious obligation. 3. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance. 4. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty*) extends from the First Sunday of Lent, March 10 th, 2019 to the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity, June 16, *Canon 920, 1. All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. 2-#644

(Luke 6:43) Are you using your God-given gifts in the way God intended? Do you compare yourself to others and complain about what you don t have instead of being thankful for what you do have? God gives each of us unique gifts and a unique plan. Listen to how God is calling you to use your gifts, to bear good fruit, for the glory of His name. 4 Baptism of Infants Second Sunday of the month-1:00pm. Baptisms are arranged by appointment. Please call the rectory for information. Baptismal instruction for first time parents will be held on the third Monday of each month at 7:30pm in Ferraro Hall First Eucharist Baptized children enrolled in our Religious Education Program are invited, with the help of their parents, to prepare for the First Reconciliation & First Eucharist. First Eucharist follows completion of the 2 nd grade. Christian Initiation R.C.I.A. (Adult Initiation) Every Thursday Evening in the Lake Street House at 7:30pm. Adults who seek information about the Catholic faith are asked to call the Rectory. Baptized Catholic adults who have not yet received First Eucharist or Confirmation are also invited to call and speak to Fr. Wilson Paculan. Confirmation of Young People The Sacrament follows completion of 8 th grade Religious instruction and must be part of the Religious Education Program. Religious Education Program Grades1-8. Classes have started. Classes start at 8:45am. For all children not enrolled in Catholic School. We offer instruction in our faith, service opportunities and time for prayer. All children must be baptized before They can start our CCD program. Anointing of the Sick. Please consider this sacrament of Healing at times of serious illness. We will also gladly bring Communion to the homebound upon request. Marriage Couples contemplating marriage must participate in preparation sessions with a Priest/Deacon and in a Pre-Cana program. Please allow ample time, at least one year, before desired date. Food Pantry Collection We will be collecting food for the Food Pantry at St. Peter s Church every day. Please bring non-perishables to the church or to the rectory. VOCATIONS Women and men who feel called to the religious life, and men called to Holy Orders, should contact the Vocations Office at Regular Weekly Meetings Rod Soriano s Bible Study Bible Study will be every Monday, at 7pm until 9pm in Ferraro hall. Everyone is welcome to come and learn about the bible. Eucharistic Adoration Adoration is the 1st, 2 nd & 4 th Tuesday of the month at 8:30am till 7PM with Benediction. Choir Sunday Mornings: 9:15AM Main Church Regular Monthly Meetings Holy Name Society The regular meeting of the Holy Name will be on 1st Saturday of the month at 6:30pm in the Lake St. House. Rosary Altar Society Regular meetings are the 2 nd Monday of the month. Rosary & Benediction in church. Meeting follows in Ferraro Hall. Filipino-American Mass 3 rd Sunday of each month at 5:00PM in the Main Church with fellowship following in Ferraro Hall. Parish Advisory Board Meeting The Parish Advisory Board (Parish Council) The next meeting will be held on (date to be announced) in Ferraro Hall at 8:00pm. Youth Group The Youth Group usually meets on the 3 rd or 4 th Sunday of the month,. Come and join our Youth group.
