1 November 2018 This stewardship season, Tyler Proctor challenged us to take a bigger picture look at how we use all our gifts and resources to make a difference for Christ in the world. Usually stewardship talks involve people asking for your money and making the case for why they need it, but I'm hoping to take a more holistic view of stewardship. Stewardship is about managing all of our resources well, making good use of what we've been given. Yes, money is a part of that, but we're not really being good stewards if all we're giving is money. As Christians, we are called to manage our whole lives wisely. One of the best ways we can be good stewards of ourselves and our lives is to be involved in the Church, Christ's body on Earth. The Church is, first and foremost, a community, and it requires the participation of all of its members in order to function. Church is not a hobby or a social club, but something essential to our spiritual well being, where we are transformed by receiving the Gospel in word and sacrament, and motivated to transform the wider community we are a part of. Being present in the Church, in a consistent and committed way, is the biggest thing we can do to build God's Kingdom here on Earth. And we must realize that just as you benefit from being a part of the Church, the Church benefits and becomes a better place by having you here! We live in a world of practical concerns, as well as spiritual ones, and part of participating in the Church includes all of us chipping in to make sure the bills are paid and the lights are staying on. But more importantly than that, we need to show up and make sure we're creating a place worth paying the bills for. Before filling out your pledge cards, I'd challenge you all to think and pray on three things: 1. What kind of community do I want Incarnation to be, and what kind of impact do I want it to have on the surrounding community? What kind of church do I want to be a committed The Incarnation Word 1
2 Episcopal Church of the Incarnation Financial Pledge for 2019 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Matthew 6:21 Name(s) Address City/Zip Phone In thanksgiving for all the gifts received from God and in support of God s work carried out by Church of the Incarnation, I/WE PLEDGE (check one): $ Per Week $ Per Month $ Per Quarter $ Per Year Signature(s) and consistent part of? 2. How can I be a good steward of what I have in order to make this beloved community a reality? How can I contribute my time and my presence to the church? How can I contribute to make Incarnation a more beautiful, functional, and welcoming place? Maybe this looks like serving at the altar, or volunteering at Bread From Heaven. Maybe it just looks like showing up more and just being a part of the community, even when you're not signed up to play a certain role. 3. What is my vocation, my passions, the work God has called me to do in the world, and how can I bring this work into the Church to make an impact? After spending time in thought and prayer about the kind of community you want to be a part of and discerning the ways God is calling you to make that beloved community a reality, I think you'll find it a lot easier to fill out your pledge card and see the vision God has for your time, talents, and treasures come to life. In Christ, -Tyler 2 The Incarnation Word
