August 2018 What a fabulous week we had at Vacation Bible School! We went back to ancient Babylon where Daniel lived in captivity. And we learned from him that God is with us no matter what even when things change, when we need help, when we re afraid or lonely, and when we re thankful. And we sang and danced about the fact that God is watching over us 24/7. The week wouldn t have been possible without all our dedicated volunteers. Thanks to everyone who worked so hard! Those who organized the meals, donated the food, and prepared and served it: Freyah Batten Ree Batten Jayci Blanton Dawn Bridges Robin Childers Niccie Dearing Hope Greene Cynthia Glidden Jennie Hamrick Jackie Hoffman Pam Pingitore Cathy Roberts Ann Torres Carla Winter Those who donated supplies: Bobbi Albert Freyah Batten Dawn Bridges Robin Childers Scott and Cynthia Glidden Jennie Hamrick Jackie and Ed Hoffman Mike Johnson Ginnie Kidd Renée McFalls The estate of Emmy Morris Pam Pingitore Cathy Roberts Mary Roberts David and Julie Taylor Hal Tyson Carla Winter Those who participated in our work days: Dawn Bridges Owen Dearing Zoe Dearing Jennie Hamrick Ginnie Kidd Taylor Mabry Pam Pingitore Carla Winter Those who led marketplace shops: Freyah Batten Ree Batten Sarah Batten The Incarnation Word 1

The Incarnation Kids thank you all so much! The start of school is just around the corner, and with that comes the start of all our fabulous Sunday School classes. Have you thought about being part of a team of teachers for our little ones? Teachers serve about once a month and you ll be given a complete, easy-to-use curriculum. If you re interested, talk to Jenny and plan on coming to the Teachers Meeting for that class. All our Christian Education offerings will begin on Sunday, September 9. Godly Play Teachers Meeting Sunday, September 19 at 9:30am This class is for the children age three through third grade. Each week you ll tell a Bible story using wooden figures to act it out you ll be given complete scripts, don t worry! Then you ll help the children think more deeply about the story by asking I wonder questions. Children will then respond to the story through artwork, share a feast, and pray together before leaving. The goal is to create a space in which the children can hear and respond to God rather than 2 The Incarnation Word
attempting to explain God to them. Children s Chapel Teachers Meeting Sunday, September 19 at 11:45 am Chapel happens during the sermon and prayers at the 10:30 service. It offer children age three through third grade a chance to hear and respond to the day s gospel lesson at their own level. You ll be given a complete curriculum which engages the children body and soul. And don t worry you ll only serve once a month, so you won t miss the sermon every week! Brick by Brick Teachers Meeting Sunday, September 26 at 10:30 am This class, like Godly Play, lets the kids in grades 4-6 hear and then respond to some of the stories of our faith. Each week you ll present the story and then ask open-ended questions (which you ll be given) to help them dig more deeply. They ll then respond to the story by creating something from it out of Legos. TeenText Teachers Meeting Sunday, September 26 at 11:45 am The teens in grades 7-12 will focus each week on the day s gospel lesson and what God is saying to them through it. The curriculum for this class includes links to videos, music, artwork all kinds of things to engage the senses as you explore the lessons together. Adult Education God Has a Dream: A Vision of Hope for our Time Begins Sunday, September 9 We ll begin the year reading God Has a Dream, an inspiring and timely book by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who won the Nobel Peace Prize for his antiapartheid work in South Africa. In his introduction to the book Tutu write, We all experience sadness, we all come at times to despair, and we all lose hop that the suffering in our lives and in our world will ever end. I want to share with you my faith and my understanding that this suffering can be transformed and redeemed. Like Martin Luther King, Jr. before him, Tutu eschews violence and seeks peaceful means to bring The Incarnation Word 3
about God s dream for this world. His words offer hope that even when the leaders of our nation seem intent on advancing themselves and ignoring the needs of their people, God brings good. Praise for the book comes from such notables as Nelson Mandela, Jimmy Carter, and the Dalai Lama. It s a must-read! Want to be part of the class? Sign up on the bulletin board in the hallway and Jenny+ will order you a copy of the book for $ Nursery With little Gabe and Callie among us, it s more important than ever that we have nursery care available each week during the 10:30 service. Want to spend time with these cuties and get your fill of giggles and cuddles? Sign up on the bulletin board in the hallway to be part of the rotation. You ll serve no more than once a month. Mowing the Church Lawn It s going to take all hands on deck to keep our grounds looking clean and welcoming this summer. But with our riding mower, it s easier than ever! Sign up on the bulletin board in the hallway to take responsibility for a week (or more) of mowing. Come by the church any time that week to get the keys to the mower and its padlock - they re hanging on the file cabinet in Jenny s office. Mow at your convenience, and drop the keys in the mail slot on the front door when you re done. We don t have other tools, so you ll need a trimmer/edger of your own - and a blower really makes it look nice. You may have noticed the weeds in our flower beds, too. With the weather so unpredictable, we aren t scheduling a specific work day, but please come by any time you have a moment to spare and spruce up one of our beds. Let s make sure passersby think to themselves, what a pretty church - I need to come one Sunday. 4 The Incarnation Word
Gaffney Night Out Tuesday, August 7 We re taking a much-needed break from festivals for a few months, letting our church display catch its breath. But in August we plan to join with folks all over the nation as part of the National Night Out event to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness and foster community spirit. Gaffney s event will feature booths for local community organizations like Incarnation as well as inflatables, games, and basketball for kids and plenty of food. Plan to join us as we tell Gaffney about our wonderful church and make connections with our community. Neighborhood Service and Cookout Sunday, September 9 We had such great response to our neighborhood Palm Sunday event and to our outdoor service in April that we ve decided to reach out to the area again. The Sunday after Labor Day weekend we ll invite our whole neighborhood to join us for casual worship under the trees. And afterward we ll treat them to freshly grilled burgers, hot dogs, and all the fixins. It should be a wonderful day, and a great way to get to know neighbors who may be looking for a church home. Mark your calendar now, and be thinking about whom you d like us to invite. On the weeks that the altar flowers are not going home with the person who paid for them, they are taken to either the hospital or a nursing home to be shared with people there. Want to help? We need donations of old vases that can be given away. They ll help us spread cheer! June Totals Income: $16, Expenses: $27, Year-to-Date Totals through May Income: $88, Expenses: $91, Thank you for giving! The Incarnation Word 5
