Living Waters Tuesday Eucharist Tuesday 1 May Feast of St Philip & St James & Preacher: Bishop Helen-Ann

The Diocese of Oxford is the Church of England in Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes. Together, we are the Church, called and sent by God as disciples of Jesus Christ and filled with the Holy Spirit. We are a living, growing network of more than a thousand congregations, chaplaincies and schools. Together, we are called to be more Christ-like: to be the Church of the Beatitudes: contemplative, compassionate and courageous for the sake of God s world. Together, we work with God and with others for the common good in every place in one of the great crossroads of the world. Together, we are called to proclaim the Christian faith afresh in this generation with joy and hope and love. Together, we are called to dream dreams and see visions of what could be, and see those visions come to birth. God of our pilgrimage, we are a thirsty people in a dry and weary land. Strike our stony hearts afresh, restore your springs of life within us. Renew us by your Holy Spirit. Let streams of living water flow through all your Church for the healing of the nations, for the blessing of the earth and to the glory of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Clergy Conference Prayer

Please stand to sing. who would valiant be, gainst all disaster, let them in constancy follow their Master. There s no discouragement shall make them once relent, their first avowed intent to be a pilgrim. Those who beset them round with dismal stories, do but themselves confound their strength the more is. No foe shall stay their might though they with giants fight: They will make good the right to be a pilgrim. Since, Lord, thou dost defend us with thy Spirit, we know we at the end shall life inherit. Then fancies flee away, we ll fear not what they say, we ll labour night and day to be a pilgrim. The Gathering Opening Hymn Words: John Bunyan, Music: MONK S GATE, English traditional melody arr. Ralph Vaughan Williams,

The Greeting In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Peace be with you and also with you. Rejoice, children of God, praise the Lord! Let us keep the feast in honour of all God s saints, in whose victory the angels rejoice and glorify the Son of God! The president welcomes the congregation and introduces the service. eluia. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed. eluia! Thanksgiving for Holy Baptism Deacon In our baptism, God calls us to be Christ-like: let us recognise ourselves just as we are, fallen, yet remade in his image, and let us pray for his renewing and healing Spirit. A time of silent reflection is kept. Deacon Your Spirit in baptism brings freedom, but so often our lives are weighed down by burdens we carry within us. Forgive us, Lord, we pray. 4

Deacon Deacon Deacon Your Spirit in baptism brings courage, but so often our lives are ill at ease, full of fear for what the day may bring us. Forgive us, Lord, we pray. Your Spirit in baptism brings wisdom but we find it so hard to recognise your gentle whisper speaking to us. Forgive us, Lord, we pray. May we know the power that breaks these chains that bind our hearts and souls, and grace to live the life you give. Renew us, Lord, we pray. Water from the font is be sprinkled over the people, as a reminder of our baptism. Music is played. Almighty God, who in Jesus Christ has given us a kingdom that cannot be destroyed, forgive you your sins, open your eyes to God s truth, strengthen you to do God s will and give you the joy of his kingdom, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 5

The Collect Let us pray: Almighty God, whom truly to know is eternal life: teach us to know your Son Jesus Christ as the way, the truth and the life; that we may follow the steps of your holy apostles Philip and James, and walk steadfastly in the way that leads to your glory; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. 6 The Liturgy of the Word Old Testament Reading We sit for the first reading, Exodus 14: 10 14, 15: (NRSV). A reading from the book of Exodus. As Pharaoh drew near, the Israelites looked back, and there were the Egyptians advancing on them. In great fear the Israelites cried out to the Lord. They said to Moses, Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us, bringing us out of Egypt? Is this not the very thing we told you in Egypt, Let us alone and let us serve the Egyptians? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness. But Moses said to the people, Do not be afraid, stand firm, and see the deliverance that the Lord will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians whom you see today you shall never see again. The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to keep still. When the horses of Pharaoh with his chariots and his chariot

drivers went into the sea, the Lord brought back the waters of the sea upon them; but the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground. Then the prophet Miriam, Aaron s sister, took a tambourine in her hand; and all the women went out after her with tambourines and with dancing. And Miriam sang to them: Sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously; horse and rider he has thrown into the sea. Reader This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. We remain seated to sing the responsorial psalm. Gradual Psalm The cantor sings the response, all sing it back and then repeat it after each block of verses. Response As the deer longs for running streams, so I long, so I long, so I long for you. Athirst my soul for you, the God who is my life! When shall I see, when shall I see, see the face of God? Echoes meet as deep is calling unto deep, over my head, all your mighty waters, sweeping over me. 7

8 Continually the foe delights in taunting me; Where is God, where is your God? Where, O where are you? Defend me, God, send forth your light and your truth, they will lead me, to your holy mountain, to your dwelling place. Then I shall go unto the altar of my God. Praising you, O my joy and gladness, I shall praise your name. We stand for the Gospel, John 4: 5 42 (NRSV). Deacon Words & Music: Bob Hurd, based on Psalm Bob Hurd (OCP Publications) Laudate! 214 Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. Gospel Reading So Jesus came to a Samaritan city called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob s well was there, and Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon. A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, Give me a drink. (His disciples had gone to the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria? (Jews do not share things in common with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, Give me a drink, you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water. The woman said to him, Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well, and with his sons and his flocks drank from it? Jesus said to her, Everyone who drinks of this water

will be thirsty again, but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life. The woman said to him, Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water. Jesus said to her, Go, call your husband, and come back. The woman answered him, I have no husband. Jesus said to her, You are right in saying, I have no husband ; for you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true! The woman said to him, Sir, I see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshipped on this mountain, but you say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem. Jesus said to her, Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth. The woman said to him, I know that Messiah is coming (who is called Christ). When he comes, he will proclaim all things to us. Jesus said to her, I am he, the one who is speaking to you. Just then his disciples came. They were astonished that he was speaking with a woman, but no one said, What do you want? or, Why are you speaking with her? Then the woman left her waterjar and went back to the city. She said to the people, Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done! He cannot be the Messiah, can he? They left the city and were on their way to him. Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, Rabbi, eat something. But he said to them, I have food to eat that you do not know about. So the disciples said to one another, Surely no one has brought him something to eat? Jesus said to them, My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to complete his work. Do you not say, Four months more, then comes the harvest? But I tell you, look around 9

you, and see how the fields are ripe for harvesting. The reaper is already receiving wages and is gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. For here the saying holds true, One sows and another reaps. I sent you to reap that for which you did not labour. Others have laboured, and you have entered into their labour. Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman s testimony, He told me everything I have ever done. So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there for two days. And many more believed because of his word. They said to the woman, It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the Saviour of the world. Deacon This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. We sit for the sermon. The preacher is the Bishop of Ripon. The Sermon As we sit, we lift up the prayers of our hearts in song. who are thirsty, all who are weak, come to the fountain, dip your heart in the stream of life. Let the pain and the sorrow be washed away, in the waves of his mercy, as deep cries out to deep. Song of Prayer 10

(We sing) Come, Lord Jesus, come. Come, Lord Jesus, come. Come, Lord Jesus, come. Come, Lord Jesus, come. who are thirsty, all who are weak, come to the fountain, dip your heart in the stream of life. Let the pain and the sorrow, be washed away, in the waves of His mercy as deep cries out to deep. (We sing) Holy Spirit, come. Holy Spirit, come. Holy Spirit, come. Holy Spirit, come. Words & Music: Brenton Brown & Glenn Robertson 1998 Vineyard Songs (UK/Eire) Please stand. The Peace We are all one in Christ Jesus, we belong to him through faith, heirs of the promise of the Spirit of peace. cf. Galatians 3: 28 Deacon The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. Let us offer one another a sign of peace. 11

The Offertory Hymn For all the saints, who from their labours rest, who thee by faith before the world confest, thy Name, O Jesus, be forever blessed. eluia, alleluia! Thou wast their Rock, their Fortress and their Might; thou, Lord, their Captain in the well fought fight; thou, in the darkness drear, their one true Light. eluia, alleluia! And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long, steals on the ear the distant triumph song, and hearts are brave again and arms are strong. eluia, alleluia! But lo! there breaks a yet more glorious day; the saints triumphant rise in bright array; the King of glory passes on his way. eluia, alleluia! From earth s wide bounds, from ocean s farthest coast, through gates of pearl streams in the countless host, singing to Father, Son and Holy Ghost: eluia, alleluia! Words: William Walsham How, Music: SINE NOMINE, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Prayer over the Gifts Let us pray: To you we come, Father of lights, with angels and saints, where heaven and earth unite. May Jesus meet us in the breaking of the bread. Amen. 12

The Eucharistic Prayer (E) sing The Lord be with you and also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give you thanks, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. And now we give you thanks, most gracious God, surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses and glorified in the assembly of your saints. The glorious company of apostles praise you. The noble fellowship of prophets praise you. The white-robed army of martyrs praise you. We, your holy Church, acclaim you. In communion with angels and archangels and with all who served you on earth and worship you now in heaven, we raise our voice with the Church across the whole world to proclaim your glory, for ever praising you and singing: Holy, holy, Lord. Holy, holy, Lord. God of power and might. Holy, holy, Lord. Music: Brenton Brown & Glenn Robertson 1998 Vineyard Songs (UK/Eire) 13

Deacon We praise and bless you, loving Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; and as we obey his command, send your Holy Spirit, that broken bread and wine outpoured may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son. On the night before he died he had supper with his friends and, taking bread, he praised you. He broke the bread, gave it to them and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. When supper was ended he took the cup of wine. Again he praised you, gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did, in him we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross. Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation, we proclaim his death and resurrection until he comes in glory. Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come again. Lord of all life, help us to work together for that day when your kingdom comes and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth. 14

Look with favour on your people, gather us in your loving arms and bring us with Philip, James and all the saints to feast at your table in heaven. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, O loving Father, for ever and ever. Amen. The Lord s Prayer With saints and martyrs through the ages, as our Saviour taught us, with confidence we pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory for ever and ever. Amen. 15

The president breaks the consecrated bread. The Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread. eluia! Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast. eluia! Please make your way to the nearest Communion station, following the ushers directions as needed. A dedicated gluten-free station is located near the front of the hall. Agnus Dei The Choir sings: Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, grant us peace. Words: Traditional, based on John 1: 29 Music: William Byrd,

I heard the voice of Jesus say, Come unto me and rest; lay down, thou weary one, lay down thy head upon my breast : I came to Jesus as I was, weary and worn and sad; I found in him a resting-place, and he has made me glad. The Communion Hymn I heard the voice of Jesus say, Behold I freely give the living water, thirsty one; stoop down and drink and live : I came to Jesus, and I drank of that life-giving stream; my thirst was quenched, my soul revived, and now I live in him. I heard the voice of Jesus say I am this dark world s light; look unto me, thy morn shall rise, and all thy day be bright : I looked to Jesus, and I found in him my star, my sun; and in that light of life I ll walk till travelling days are done. Words: Horatius Bonar, Music: KINGSFOLD, melody from English County Songs, 1893 collected by John A. F. Maitland arr. Ralph Vaughan Williams,

The Post Communion Prayer After a period of silence, we stand with the president to pray: Almighty God, who poured out your Holy Spirit upon your apostles, filling them with joy and boldness to preach the gospel: by the power of the same Spirit strengthen us to witness to your truth and to draw everyone to the fire of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Blessing eluia. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed. eluia! The Lord be with you and also with you. May God the Father, who called the Israelites across the Red Sea, fill you with the courage of your calling. Amen. May God the Son, who met the Samaritan woman by the well, give you the water of eternal life. Amen. May God the Holy Spirit, who inspired Philip and James, pour out upon you the riches of his grace. Amen. 18

And the blessing of God almighty the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit be among you and remain with you always. Amen. The Dismissal Deacon Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen. The Recessional Hymn my hope on God is founded; he doth still my trust renew. Me through change and chance he guideth, only good and only true. God unknown, he alone calls my heart to be his own. Human pride and earthly glory, sword and crown betray God s trust; what our care and toil establish, tower and temple fall to dust but God s power, hour by hour, is my temple and my tower. 19

Still from earth to God eternal sacrifice of praise be done, high above all praises praising for the gift of Christ his Son. Christ doth call one and all: you who follow shall not fall. Words: Robert Bridges, Music: MICHAEL, Herbert Howells,
