Living Waters Morning Prayer Tuesday 1 May Thursday 3 May

The Diocese of Oxford is the Church of England in Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes. Together, we are the Church, called and sent by God as disciples of Jesus Christ and filled with the Holy Spirit. We are a living, growing network of more than a thousand congregations, chaplaincies and schools. Together, we are called to be more Christ-like: to be the Church of the Beatitudes: contemplative, compassionate and courageous for the sake of God s world. Together, we work with God and with others for the common good in every place in one of the great crossroads of the world. Together, we are called to proclaim the Christian faith afresh in this generation with joy and hope and love. Together, we are called to dream dreams and see visions of what could be, and see those visions come to birth. God of our pilgrimage, we are a thirsty people in a dry and weary land. Strike our stony hearts afresh, restore your springs of life within us. Renew us by your Holy Spirit. Let streams of living water flow through all your Church for the healing of the nations, for the blessing of the earth and to the glory of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Clergy Conference Prayer

Morning Prayer Tuesday St Philip & St James Preparation O Lord, open our lips and our mouth shall proclaim your praise. Your faithful servants bless you. They make known the glory of your kingdom. Thou art the Way: by thee alone from sin and death we flee; and they who would the Father seek must seek him, Lord, by thee. Thou art the Truth: thy word alone true wisdom can impart; thou only canst inform the mind and purify the heart. Thou art the Life: the rending tomb proclaims thy conquering arm; and those who put their trust in thee nor death nor hell shall harm. Thou art the Way, the Truth, the Life: grant us that Way to know, that Truth to keep, that Life to win, whose joys eternal flow. Words: George Washington Doane, Music: ST JAMES, Raphael Courteville, c

The night has passed, and the day lies open before us; let us pray with one heart and mind. Silence is kept. As we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you; now and for ever. Amen. The Word of God Psalmody Metrical Setting of Psalm 139 O God, you search me and you know me. my thoughts lie open to your gaze. When I walk or lie down you are before me: ever the maker and keeper of my days. You know my resting and my rising. You discern my purpose from afar, and with love everlasting you besiege me: in every moment of life or death, you are. Before a word is on my tongue, Lord, you have known its meaning through and through. You are with me beyond my understanding: God of my present, my past and future, too. Although your Spirit is upon me, still I search for shelter from your light. There is nowhere on earth I can escape you: even the darkness is radiant in your sight. 4

For you created me and shaped me, gave me life within my mother s womb. For the wonder of who I am, I praise you: safe in your hands, all creation is made new. Words: Bernadette Farrell, b based on Psalm 139 Music: B. Farrell 1992 Bernadette Farrell (OCP) Scripture Reading Colossians 1: 1 23 A contemplative Church: setting Christ at the centre of our identity. The reading will be followed by a short period of silence. Responsory Death is swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your sting? Christ is risen from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. Death is swallowed up in victory. The trumpet will sound and the dead shall be raised. Where, O death, is your sting? We shall not all sleep, but we shall be changed. Death is swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your sting? from 1 Corinthians 15 5

Gospel Canticle The Gospel Canticle is the climax of the morning or evening praise for the work of God in Christ. Incense, the smell of which is a tangible reminder of the presence of God in worship, is offered to honour the Benedictus, just as it can be used to honour the Gospel at the Eucharist. The Benedictus (The Song of Zechariah) The underlined syllables in the text denote the two crotchets (black notes) in the chant above. On the foundation stones of the heav nly city are written the names of the apostles of the Lamb. Al-lelu-ia. 1 Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel, who has come to his people and set them free. 2 He has raised up for us a mighty Saviour, born of the house of his servant David. 3 Through his holy prophets God promised of old to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all that hate us, 4 To show mercy to our ancestors, and to remember his holy covenant. 5 This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham: to set us free from the hands of our enemies, 6 Free to worship him without fear, holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. 6

7 And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to pre-pare his way, 8 To give his people knowledge of sal-vation by the forgiveness of all their sins. 9 In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break up-on us, 10 To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the be-ginning is now and shall be for ever. A-men. On the foundation stones of the heav nly city are written the names of the apostles of the Lamb. Al-lelu-ia. Luke 1: Intercessions are offered. Prayers The Collect of the day is said. Almighty Father, whom truly to know is eternal life: teach us to know your Son Jesus Christ as the way, the truth, and the life; that we may follow the steps of your holy apostles Philip and James, and walk steadfastly in the way that leads to your glory; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Amen. 7

The Lord s Prayer is said. Rejoicing in God s new creation, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray Our Father in heaven The Conclusion May the risen Christ grant us with Philip and James the joys of eternal life. Amen. Let us bless the Lord. eluia, alleluia. Thanks be to God. eluia, alleluia. 8

Morning Prayer Wednesday Easter Season (St Athanasius) Preparation O Lord, open our lips and our mouth shall proclaim your praise. In your resurrection, O Christ, let heaven and earth rejoice. eluia. The night has passed, and the day lies open before us; let us pray with one heart and mind. Silence is kept. As we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you; now and for ever. Amen. 9

10 The Word of God Psalmody Plainsong Psalm 30 I will sing your praise, O my Lord, * for you have ex-alt-ed me. 1 I will exalt you, O Lord, because you have lifted me up and have not let my enemies triumph o-ver^me. O Lord my God, I cried out to you, and you re-stored me to health. 2 You brought me up, O Lord, from the^dead; you restored my life as I was going down to the grave. 3 Sing to the Lord, you servants of his; give thanks for the remembrance of his ho-li^ness. For his wrath endures but the twinkling of an eye, his favour for a life-time. 4 Weeping may spend the^night, but joy comes in the morn-ing. Tone VIIIg 5 While I felt secure, I said, I shall never be dis^turbed. You, Lord, with your favour made me as strong as the moun-tains. 6 Then you hid your^face, and I was filled with^fear. 7 I cried to you, O^Lord; I pleaded with the Lörd, say-ing, 8 What profit is there in my blood, if I go down to the^pit? will the dust praise you or de-clare your faith-ful^ness?

9 Hear, O Lord, and have mercy up-on me; O Lord, be my hel-per. 10 You have turned my wailing into dan-cing; you have put off my sack-cloth and clothed me with joy; 11 Therefore my heart sings to you without ceas-ing; O Lord my God, I will give you thanks for ev-er. Glory to the Father and to the^son and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ev-er. A-men. I will sing your praise, O my Lord, * for you have ex-alt-ed me. Scripture Reading Colossians 1: 24 2: 15 A courageous Church: seeking to present everyone mature in Christ. Short Reading from the Writings of St Athanasius The Word of God himself became human that we might become divine. He manifested himself by means of a body so that we might perceive the mind of the unseen Father. He endured shame from human beings, so that we might inherit immortality. He himself was unhurt by this, for he is impassible and incorruptible; but by his own impassibility he preserved and healed the suffering humanity for whose sake he suffered such things. In short, the achievements of the Saviour that result from his incarnation are so many and so special, that to try to number them is like gazing at the open sea and trying to count the waves. No one 11

can see all the waves with their eyes, for whenever someone tries to do so, the waves that follow behind overwhelm their senses. So too, when we want to take in all the achievements of Christ in the body, we cannot do so, even by totting them all up; for the things that surpass our thoughts are always more than those we think we have grasped. Athanasius, On the Incarnation 54 Gospel Canticle The Song of Christ s Glory The underlined syllables in the text denote the two crotchets (black notes) in the chant above. At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow. 1 Christ Jesus was in the form of God, but he did not cling to equali-ty with God. 2 He emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, and was born in our human likeness. 3 Being found in human form he humbled him-self, and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross. 4 Therefore God has highly ex-alted him, and bestowed on him the name above every name, 5 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth; 12

6 And every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the be-ginning is now and shall be for ever. A-men. At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow. Philippians 2: 5 11 Intercessions are offered. Prayers Ever-living God, whose servant Athanasius testified to the mystery of the Word made flesh for our salvation: help us, with all your saints, to contend for the truth and to grow into the likeness of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen. Rejoicing in God s new creation, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray Our Father in heaven The Conclusion May the risen Christ grant us the joys of eternal life. Amen. Let us bless the Lord. eluia, alleluia. Thanks be to God. eluia, alleluia. 13

14 Morning Prayer Thursday Easter Season Preparation O Lord, open our lips and our mouth shall proclaim your praise. In your resurrection, O Christ, let heaven and earth rejoice. eluia. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, early in the morning our song shall rise to thee. Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity. In the name of the Father, in the name of the Son, in the name of the Spirit, Lord, we come. We re gather d together to lift up your name, to call on our Saviour, to fall on your grace. Hear the joyful sound of our offering, as your saints bow down, as your people sing. We will rise with you lifted on your wings and the world will see that: Our God saves, our God saves. There is hope in your name; mourning turns to songs of praise. Our God saves, our God saves. Words & Music: Brenton Brown & Paul Baloche 2007 Integrity s Hosanna! Music (Admin. by Integrity Music)

Holy, holy, holy, all the saints adore thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea. Cherubim and seraphim, falling down before thee, which wert and art and evermore shalt be. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, all thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea. Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity. Words: Reginald Heber, Music: NICAEA, John Bacchus Dykes, The Word of God Psalmody Metrical Setting of Psalm 23 The Lord s my Shepherd, I ll not want. He makes me lie in pastures green. He leads me by the still still waters. His goodness restores my soul. And I will trust in you alone, and I will trust in you alone; for your endless mercy follows me, your goodness will lead me home. 15

He guides my ways in righteousness and he anoints my head with oil and my cup it overflows with joy, I feast on his pure delights. And though I walk the darkest path, I will not fear the evil one. For you are with me and your rod and staff are the comfort I need to know. Words: Stuart Townend, b based on Psalm 23 Music: S. Townend 1996 Thankyou Music (Admin. by Integrity Music) Scripture Reading Colossians 3: 1 17 A compassionate Church: clothed with the love of Christ for God s world. The reading will be followed by a time of silence. Death is swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your sting? Christ is risen from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. Death is swallowed up in victory. The trumpet will sound and the dead shall be raised. Where, O death, is your sting? We shall not all sleep, but we shall be changed. Death is swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your sting? from 1 Corinthians 15 16

Gospel Canticle Metrical Setting of the Benedictus The God of Israel, blessèd be, who comes to set this people free, who raises up with mighty sign, a Saviour born of David s line. Through holy prophets promised long, salvation comes to conquer wrong. Old enmities are overthrown as God in mercy calls us home. In holy covenant God swore to Abraham, our ancestor, that we from fear and falsehood raised might walk before God all our days. And you, my child, are called this day, a prophet to prepare the way, to speak salvation, and to bring God s wayward people to their King. In tender mercy, God of love the dawn is breaking from above, to shine on those in death and dark, to guide our feet in peace s path. Words: based on Luke 1: Music: O WALY WALY, English traditional melody arr. Noel Tredinnick, b Intercessions are offered. Prayers Silence may be kept. 17

The Collect of the day is said. God of life, who for our redemption gave your only-begotten Son to the death of the cross, and by his glorious resurrection have delivered us from the power of our enemy: grant us so to die daily to sin, that we may evermore live with him in the joy of his risen life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Lord s Prayer is said. Rejoicing in God s new creation, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray Our Father in heaven Are you thirsty? Are you empty? Come and drink these living waters, tired and broken, peace unspoken, rest beside these living waters. Christ is calling, find refreshing at the cross of living waters. Lay your life down, all the old gone, rise up in these living waters. The Conclusion 18

There s a river that flows with mercy and love, bringing joy to the city of our God. There our hope is secure. Do not fear anymore. Praise the Lord of living waters. Spirit moving, mercy washing, healing in these living waters. Lead your children to the shoreline, life is in these living waters. Are you thirsty? Are you empty? Come and drink these living waters, love forgiveness, vast and boundless, Christ, he is our living waters. Words & Music: Ed Cash & Kristyn Getty 2016 Getty Music Publishing (Admin. by Music Services, Inc.) May the risen Christ grant us the joys of eternal life. Amen. Let us bless the Lord. eluia, alleluia. Thanks be to God. eluia, alleluia.
