Living Waters Evening Prayer Monday 30 April Wednesday 2 May Please bring this booklet with you to your small group each night
Small Group Prayer Evening Prayer at the conference is shared in small groups (the same groups as for the Bible study in the mornings). We hope this will allow you to get to know people a little better and provide opportunity to begin genuinely praying for one another s real concerns, in whatever manner you are comfortable, as the days go on. Leading Please choose from among the group someone to lead each night, someone to read and someone to begin the short chants, which we hope will be familiar enough to most to sing unaccompanied. Please do not ask the bishops or archdeacons to lead, as they will be leading worship at other points. Foot- or Hand-Washing on Wednesday On the Wednesday evening we encourage everyone to respond to the Lord s command to wash one another s feet, which we will have heard at the day s eucharist. In today s society many people find having their feet washed uncomfortable, for all manner of reasons, and so we offer you the choice of having a hand washed instead if you prefer. Please bring along a towel to dry your foot or hand afterwards (water, jug and bowl will be supplied). 2
Evening Prayer Monday Christ calls us to be contemplative. Christ calls us to be courageous. Christ calls us to be compassionate. Let us pause to reflect on the past day, all we have left behind, all we have shared, all that has been spoken and all that has gone unsaid. A time of silent reflection is kept. Then all sing through twice: Words & Music: Daniel Iverson, Birdwing Music 3
Short Bible Reading In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Genesis 1: 1 2 Responsory When you send forth your Spirit, we are created; you renew the face of the earth. When you send forth your Spirit, we are created; you renew the face of the earth. O Lord, how manifold are your works; in wisdom you have made them all. You renew the face of the earth. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. When you send forth your Spirit, we are created; you renew the face of the earth. cf. Psalm 104: 30, 24 Response Sharing Please introduce yourself to someone you do not already know well and share with one another something of your ministry contexts and what you are each hoping for from these days apart at the conference. After about 10 minutes, the group should draw back together and each person introduce their neighbour with whom they ve been speaking to the whole group and offer one word that sums up their prayer for them. 4
Together we pray: God of our pilgrimage, we are a thirsty people in a dry and weary land. Strike our stony hearts afresh, restore your springs of life within us. Renew us by your Holy Spirit. Let streams of living water flow through all your Church for the healing of the nations, for the blessing of the earth and to the glory of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and ever. Amen. Conclusion May the God of contemplation enrich our gaze, give rest to our souls, and draw us into his perfect peace. Amen. 5
Evening Prayer Tuesday Christ calls us to be contemplative. Christ calls us to be courageous. Christ calls us to be compassionate. Let us pause to reflect on the past day, all we have left behind, all we have shared, all that has been spoken and all that has gone unsaid. A time of silent reflection is kept. Then all sing through twice: Words & Music: Jacques Berthier, Ateliers et Presses de Taizé (Admin. by GIA Publications) 6
Short Bible Reading Then the angel showed me the river of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing it fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. Revelation 22: 1 2 Responsory Be strong and let your heart take courage, all you who wait upon the Lord. Be strong and let your heart take courage, all you who wait upon the Lord. Love the Lord, all you his saints. all you who wait upon the Lord. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. Be strong and let your heart take courage, all you who wait upon the Lord. cf. Psalm 31: 24 Response Prayer in Pairs In twos or threes, as people are comfortable, each person is invited to share something they would value prayer for, whether personal or for their ministry context. The others in the two or three are encouraged to gently lay a hand on the person s shoulder as they are seated and to pray for them either in silence or out loud. 7
Amen. Conclusion May the God of courage build us up in his strength to trust in his power and work for his Kingdom. Amen. 8
Evening Prayer - Wednesday Christ calls us to be contemplative. Christ calls us to be courageous. Christ calls us to be compassionate. Let us pause to reflect on the past day, all we have left behind, all we have shared, all that has been spoken and all that has gone unsaid. A time of silent reflection is kept. Then all sing through three times (in English or Latin as the group prefers): Words & Music: Jacques Berthier, Ateliers et Presses de Taizé Short Bible Reading Jesus said to his disciples, Do you know what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord and you are right, for that is what I am. So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another s feet. John 13: 12b 14 9
Responsory Come to me all you who travail and are heavy laden and I will refresh you. Come to me all you who travail and are heavy laden and I will refresh you. For my burden is easy and my yoke is light. I will refresh you. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. Come to me all you who travail and are heavy laden and I will refresh you. 10 cf. Matthew 11: 28, 29 Response Foot- or Hand-Washing Please bring along a towel with you. Water and bowls will be provided. Each person is invited to share with the whole group one thing that has built them up or encouraged them over the three days together. Once all have had chance to share what has encouraged them, each person gently washes and then dries the hand or foot of the person next to them, as a sign of love, service and commitment to build one another up in Christ.
Amen. Conclusion May the God of compassion, enlarge our hearts, give strength to our hands and purpose to our feet. Amen.
