Children from the ages 7 thru 17 needing Sacraments of Initiation may contact Sylvia Fernandez at Ovase. Not one person, not even one Archdiocese, can protect all children / vulnerable adults. Abuse is an epidemic problem in our entire society but we intend to do everything we can to stop it. We are offering Child/ Adult Safety instruction to protect children, youth, vulnerable adults. We will also educate parents who have a responsibility to safeguard the children in their care. Children / Vulnerable Adults cannot protect themselves from a predator. We know they need trusted and loving adults in whom they can confide any concern or fear. You are that person and we want to work with you for the good of all children/ vulnerable adults in this Archdiocese. Spanish and English classes will be offered. These funds are used for our youth for events such as Youth Spectacular, Young Neighbors in Action, Steubenville Conference, and many more events and projects, where our youth learn more about living the Catholic faith and serving our Lord. 5 5 St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD MAY 13, St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT RCIA NEWS The Easter Vigil is only the beginning of a commitment to a lifelong discovery and living out the Christian message. The next period of the RCIA JOURNEY is called MYSTAGOGY, a Greek word meaning mystery. In the early Church, the community used the fifty days from Easter to Pentecost to explain the mystery of the sacraments celebrated at Easter. This period is a time for our newly baptized, Frank Garza and those who have come into full communion with the Catholic Church, James LaMontagne and Roberto Sanchez, to gain a deeper understanding of God s word, the sacraments and what their new commitment means in their lives. They will continue to gather for prayer and exploration of Catholic Christianity with a redirected focus - from learning the faith to living the faith. Please continue to pray for them. Space is limited.first come, first serve! Please call Tennille Lessing or Monica Wheaton with any questions. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In Ireland and the United Kingdom, Mother s Day is over. Mothering Sunday was on the Fourth Sunday of Lent. Long ago, people were freed from work to travel on this day to the parish where they were baptized, their Mother Church. Often, people were reunited with their mothers on this day. Employers would release their workers and servants for this visit. The American celebration, while based on this custom, really has to do with an anti-war movement of mothers in Civil War times. They crusaded for better sanitary conditions for their sons. When President Wilson instituted the first Mother s Day in 1912, it was a day to fly the flag in honor of mothers whose children had died in battle. First we hear Luke s description of those events in the opening verses of the Acts of the Apostles. Next we hear words of encouragement and guidance from the Letter to the Ephesians. Finally we hear Mark s account of the Ascension, foretelling the mighty words and acts the Christian community would do in Jesus name. Together these scriptures give us a vision of the mission of the church of Jesus Christ a mission statement of sorts. Like mission statements in our parishes and corporations, this mission statement can help us set priorities and focus our activities. Aunque pensemos que las personas santas están alejadas del mundo, no podemos escuchar las lecturas de hoy sin comprender que las personas santas elegidas por Dios son enviadas a vivir en el mundo, en donde pueden revelar el amor de Dios que santifica al mundo entero.
