First, Faer Mayo mentioned at e Dawn Redwoods, e two large Redwood Trees in e courtyard have branches which are breaking and falling (nearly striking parishioners and making areas of e garden unusable). Fr. Mayo contacted an arborist who confirmed at e trees have become a safety concern due to eir size and age. An application petition was filed wi e city to have e trees removed. The application has been approved. Approximate cost for e removal will be around $ $3000. The contractor chosen will save some of e lumber from e trees and benches for e new garden area will be made from e lumber, allowing e trees to continue to be a part of St. Michael s. Secondly, e Building Project Team met recently wi e Parish Funds Trustees (PFT). Project updates were discussed, main concern from e (PFT) was e parish ability to repay e loan, which primarily come from e gifts and pledges of parishioners and friends. The Parish must also be considered financially solvent in order to receive a loan. Finally, e Parish will be moving forward to hire a Project Manager, begin e process of selecting a general contractor, and scheduling a hearing-wi e City of Portland Historic Landmarks Commission, to obtain e needed formal City approval. 6 Never tire of working for a more just world, marked by greater solidarity! Pope Francis, Apostolic Journey to Rio de Janeiro, July 25, 2013 T o be just toward oers, we must work to ensure ey have adequate resources to meet eir human needs. Projects supported by e Caolic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) move beyond providing for immediate needs. They work to build healy, sustainable futures for communities. Ten years ago, Boston s Haley House began offering bakery training at e request of a few regular guests at e soup kitchen. Due to high demand, Haley House expanded e training into a six-mon course at includes customer relations and basic business principles. Haley House currently has 70 trainees who have completed e program and are now employed in e Boston area. Haley House also offers cooking classes for at-risk teens and holistic, individual support to men and women reentering e community after incarceration. Like Haley House, Fai Works recognizes e value of human relationships in e fight against poverty. Operating in e Roanoke Valley, Fai Works builds community rough conversation. After listening to residents and members of parishes and congregations in e city s Soueast area, e group worked to get e area recognized as medically underserved, and ereby secured $6 million for a new heal clinic. This change will make a dramatic difference in e lives of residents, 80 percent of whom are uninsured. The dialogue fostered by Fai Works also bridges racial divides. One member commented at nowhere else would we probably have talked to each oer, but here we are now working togeer, gardening [in community gardens] togeer. Members are working to train leaders in e Hispanic community and to listen to eir concerns. Haley House and Fai Works create a strong local economy by building human relationships and carry on Christ s mission to bring glad tidings to e poor... liberty to captives... sight to e blind, to let e oppressed go free (Lk 4:18). The Caolic Campaign for Human Development funds programs like ese in communities across e United States and helps people living in poverty join togeer, identify problems and find ways to improve eir lives and neighborhoods. CCHD is e official domestic anti-poverty agency of e Caolic bishops in e United States. Your support helps to end poverty one community at a time. Working togeer, we can reach out and touch e lives of ose living on e margins of society. Please visit to read more details of CCHD s efforts to spread Christ s love by helping to break e cycle of poverty in your community and across e country
7 Origins CCHD was founded in 1970 by e Caolic bishops of e United States as eir domestic anti-poverty program. They realized at outreach rough established charitable services was not creating e changes people needed in order to get emselves out of poverty. Wi is goal in mind, e bishops worked to address e underlying policies and systems at perpetuate poverty, as a complement to direct service. Impact CCHD brings Caolic social teaching to life. It funds community and economic development programs across e United States at help poor and marginalized people join togeer to make decisions, seek solutions to local problems, and find ways to improve eir lives and neighborhoods. Economic development initiatives help create new businesses and jobs. CCHD also provides educational opportunities for Caolics to learn about poverty, stand in solidarity wi ose affected by it, and reflect on eir own responsibility before e great need of oers. Involvement You can make a difference: 1. Donate. Your generous support, in e parish collection and roughout e year, is vital to CCHD s anti-poverty mission and creates real change. 2. Learn. Take advantage of CCHD awareness programs to learn more about poverty, ose affected by it, and our responsibilities as members of e Church. Visit 3. Pray for ose who receive CCHD support and for all our broers and sisters struggling wi poverty Grants Community Development: 178 Economic Development/Job Creation: 36 Technical Assistance: 10 Total: $9,299,250 CCHD is committed to accountability and transparency. We allocate funds to community projects at promote e mission and vision of CCHD while adhering to e moral and social teachings of e Caolic Church. Please visit to view funding criteria and see a detailed list of our most recent grants. CCHD s primary source of support is a once-ayear collection held in parishes across e United States. Twenty-five percent of e collection supports anti-poverty projects in e (arch) diocese where e funds are collected.
