Zuehlsdorf s Blog written for someone who is inking of going to confession...how to allay e anxiety some have, etc. Before anying else, I am very glad at you are aware of your need to go to confession and you are striving to do it right. Please know, friend, at going to confession is not supposed to be like being stretched on e rack. Yes, it is hard. Yes, you accuse yourself of sins. Yes, you should be orough and at can be painful. But ink of e relief afterward. Even if you don t ink you are wholly knowledgeable about what to do, go anyway. The priest can help if you get stuck. 99.9% of priests are going to be pretty careful wi you. Just explain at it has been a long time and at you are nervous. He ll hear at. One: There is no specific meod of confessing or of examining your conscience, which is more to e point. You can use e commandments. That is a standard way. You can go wi virtues and vices. I ink examens using e Decalogue, e Ten Commandments, are pretty complete. Perhaps at would be e easiest. You could simply say at you sinned against e, say, 4 Commandment X times. However, sometimes you may need to add details or circumstances at made it worse. For example, you can sin against e 7 Commandment by stealing a candy bar, stealing Bill Gate s Porsche, or stealing a little old widow s monly pension. If you are starving, running from an Islamic terrorist hit squad, or well I can t ink of a good reason to steal a widow s pension at e moment, unless it is to buy Mystic Monk Coffee no not at eier ese are details at need to be included. Also, if you stole a candy bar once or 634 times, at is someing you need to mention. Get e idea? Two: 2) It is necessary to confess sins in kind and number, what e sin was and how many times you did it. The number does make a difference. That said, we have bad memories. Just do your best, friend and don t torture yourself. Ten years is a long time. If you can t ink of numbers of times, go wi someing like an frequency, or an average per mon, per year. Someing like at. If you still can t get at it, use someing like very rarely, really often, constantly. That sort of ing. God knows at you are doing your best and, in examining your conscience, you are still giving yourself and e priest a sense of e problem you may or may not have wi a particular sin. Three: Sometimes when a sin is deeply ingrained or habitual ere is a sense in which e guilt of at sin can be a bit less. That doesn t mean at you are not committing a sin. Furermore, when you know at you are sinning, you have e responsibility to do someing about it. We can t excuse ourselves saying, I can t help it!, and en continue as if it suddenly is okay to do it because we struggled over it for a little bit. This is one of e hard parts of e spiritual life: we have to be willing to suffer, plain and simple. Saying no to ourselves can make us suffer. But knowing at we are going to suffer ahead of time could help us get our heads into e right place and make some plans before hand, so when e hard part starts, we are not just twisting in e wind. If you know at X is a big problem and at you had better stop X-ing, make a plan so at when you recognize you are on e verge of X-ing, your pre-arranged plan will kick in and you will Y instead. This can help. Finally, it really does help to memorize a regular patter or routine for what to say. That structure will make it easier!
5 Take it easy friend. If you forget someing, but you did your best during e confession itself, don t fret. Mentioned it e next time you go. God knows you did your best and He doesn t expect e impossible. You ll be okay. Just go. And if you ink you may need a little time, make an appointment wi e priest, even to meet at e confessional if you don t want to do e face to face ing. Give it a shot, please. A. One ousand Q. What do bulletproof vests, fire escapes, windshield wipers and laser printers have in common? A. All were invented by women. Q. What is e only food at doesn't spoil? A. A TOUCH OF HUMOR Many years ago in Scotland, a new game was invented. It was ruled 'Gentlemen Only...Ladies Forbidden'....and us, e word GOLF entered into e English language. Every day more money is printed for Monopoly an e U.S. Treasury. Men can read smaller print an women can; women can hear better. YOU KNOW YOU ARE LIVING IN 2010 when You accidentally enter your PIN on e microwave. Coca-Cola was originally green. 2. You haven't played solitaire wi real cards in years. It is impossible to lick your elbow. The cost of raising a medium-size dog to e age of eleven: $ 16, You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your family of ree. 4. You e person who works at e desk next to you. Intelligent people have more zinc and copper in eir hair.. The first novel ever written on a typewriter, Tom Sawyer. 111,111,111 x 111,111,111 = 12,345,678,987, 654, Your reason for not staying in touch wi friends and family is at ey don't have addresses. 6. You pull up in your own driveway and use your cell phone to see if anyone is home to help you carry in e groceries... Q.. If you were to spell out numbers, how far would you have to go until you would find e letter 'A'? 7. Every commercial on television has a web site at e bottom of e screen
6 8. Leaving e house wiout your cell phone, which you didn't even have e first 20 or 30 (or 60) years of your life, is now a cause for panic and you turn around to go and get it 10. You get up in e morning and go on line before getting your coffee 11. You start tilting your head sideways to smile. : ) 12 You're reading is and nodding and laughing. 13. Even worse, you know exactly to whom you are going to forward is message. Seeking time to deepen your relationship wi our Lord? Please join us for our Holy Hour Wednesday 2nd March at 7pm in St Michael's Church. Holy Hour comprises of a multilingual Rosary, Shared/Quiet Prayers, Exposition & Benediction of e Blessed Sacrament. Take advantage of is time between Sundays to develop your relationship wi our Lord and pray togeer wi us. 14. You are too busy to notice ere was no #9 on is list. 15. You actually scrolled back up to check at ere wasn't a # 9 on is list THE LITTLE WAY The next time you re tempted to judge someone, perhaps remember is little bit of ought of someone from e internet. It was a person s reaction to a priest he knew who was charged wi abuse. STAFF CHANGE We have a new employee as part of our parish staff. Faer Mayo recently hired Dan Benedict as our part-time Maintenance Custodian. Dan will be familiar to many of you since he has been our Handyperson e last 4-5 years when someing has broken, etc. Please make him welcome here at our parish. You know e way at geese fly, where ey take turns flying in e draft of ose in front of em so at e work is shared? That's why we have to pray not only for priests, but for each oer, so when one of us is lacking e energy to go on, we carry at broer or sister in our own draft until we grow weary, and en ey do e same for us. In Our Lord's own words, He told us at ose who are well have no need of a physician. Out of own misery and sinfulness ere is at spark at compels us to ink of and do for oers, even while we ourselves are lacking. It's not hypocrisy to want to rescue oers from falling into Hell. It's a trick of e devil to make us ink is way so we feel we should do noing. Let's continue to pray for each oer.
