We have a rich immigrant ancestry and a diverse ethnic heritage where Christian charity prevails. We are committed to the Eucharist, the Good News of Jesus Christ and all teachings of the Catholic Church. We strive to minister to the needs of those we encounter on a daily basis by centering ourselves in worship, participating in the sacramental life of the Church, and performing works of mercy. We seek to build-up the Kingdom of God through stewardship and service under the guidance of our patroness, Mary, the Mother of God.
2 Page Two Seven Dolors Church The clerical sexual abuse scandal and the subsequent cover up has revealed a deep problem that has plagued our church for untold centuries. That problem is clericalism. This is not just my observation. Pope Francis has pointed this out time and time again. One effect of clericalism is that decisions are made by a very few the clerics i.e. the members of the clergy and these decisions effect the vast majority who are not consulted about the decisions or policies, etc. I think everyone reading this understands what I mean, and can think of many instances of clericalism that they have witnessed. I am writing about one of the issues that effects all of us. It is the present translation of the Roman Missal which was released in I do not claim to be a Latin scholar ; however, I feel blessed in that I studied Latin for 4 years at Duquesne and also taught Latin at St. Vincent and in high schools. The Roman Missal is in Latin and, by decree, must be the basis for all the translations of the Mass into the many languages of the world. At the point in time in which the present English translation was done, an archconservative group was in control of approving translations. This group insisted that the translations follow the Latin literally. Let me explain the result. We really didn t get a translation; we got a vocabulary list. My old Latin professor at Duquesne an Irishman by the name of Father Cornelius Holley would have told us if we had presented such a translation Okay, my boy now put that vocabulary into English sentences. At the time of the debate over the present translation, I was present at a workshop on the topic presented by Bishop Trautman of Erie. He pointed out that the about to be released new translation was full of problems. Time has certainly proven him to have been correct. We can only hope that at some point the necessary complete and thorough re-do will be made. Oh, sorry, we all know that the clerical establishment does not listen to us underlings..it may take centuries for action to come about..sad. Compare for yourself: Present Opening Prayer for Baptism of the Lord: Almighty ever-living God, who, when Christ had been baptized in the River Jordan and as the Holy Spirit descended upon him, solemnly declared him your beloved Son, grant that your children by adoption, reborn of water and the Holy Spirit, may always be well pleasing to you. Older version: Almighty, eternal God, when the Spirit descended upon Jesus at his baptism in the Jordon, you revealed him as your own beloved Son. Keep us, your children born of water and the Spirit, faithful to our calling. Fr. Richard, O.S.B. Thank You! A special thank you to the Christian Mothers and the Knights of Columbus for sponsoring the Epiphany Party. The food provided, covered dishes and desserts were delicious.
