2 17 th Annual Larcum Concert Shout to the Lord February 11 Photos: Justin Knapp GoF by Corinna Ramsey The three kings visited our Generations of Faith program in January. They brought stories of their journey, answered questions and their famous gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Our littlest Generations of Faith members played in the nursery so their parents and older siblings could visit with the 3 kings. 2
3 You can find us on... by Corinna Ramsey When you walk into Good Shepherd you might get the feeling that we like using technology here. I have been to few churches that have the technology that we do here. We have 2 screens in the worship space that are used regularly to enhance our liturgies. We have 2 screens in Daniels Hall that are used for Generations of Faith, In the Spotlight, funerals, etc. We have 3 monitors that welcome you and keep you up to date on what is going on at Good Shepherd. Why do we use all of this technology anyway? We use it because we respond well to it and we can use it to our benefit in many ways. We know that many of you use technology to keep up with Good Shepherd too. Some great ways for you to keep in touch with your staff and fellow parishioners are our parish app, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and our website. Here is just a snapshot of how you can find us on these mediums and what you might find. Good Shepherd Parish App: Iphone users: text gscc2 to to download, Android users: text gscc1 to to download. You can find mass times, contact information, bulletins, prayers, Sacrament information, our Facebook link, our calendar, daily readings and more. Facebook: We post on our Facebook page every day. You will see posts to register for events, times of prayer, find out what Spotlight is about this weekend, messages that help you enjoy Lent and much more. Search Good Shepherd Catholic Church on Facebook and Like us to see these wonderful things each day. Twitter: Maybe you don t use Facebook or like to use Twitter too. You will see many of the same things we post on our Facebook page on Twitter. Our Twitter handle - so follow us there. Instagram: All the cool people are on Instagram now, right?! We are too. Again, you will see many of the same things that we put on our other social media accounts so you can choose the media that is right for you. Good_Shepherd_Catholic_Church is our handle on Instagram. We also utilize at Good Shepherd to send you Life Notices, reminders, registrations, Lenten/Advent reflections and more. If you don t get these s, let us know so we can get your current and keep you in the loop. We send you just enough to keep in touch but not enough to bug you. Website: Our website is very well kept and user friendly so if you are not on any of the social media outlets or just want to find the information at your own pace, check our website for information on our ministries, schedules, registrations, youth corner, video messages and of course, more! So have we given you enough opportunities to grow in faith and love with your Good Shepherd community? Let us know if you would like to see any different things on any of these media outlets. We are there for you! 3

Enhance Your Soul With Musings by Maggie Brooks Howard Zinn said, Imprisonment is a way of pretending to solve the problem of crime. It does nothing for the victims of crime, but perpetuates the idea of retribution, thus maintaining the endless cycle of violence in our culture. It is a cruel and useless substitute for the elimination of those conditions - poverty, unemployment, desperation, racism, greed - which are at the root of the most punished crimes. The crimes of the rich and powerful go mostly unpunished. What do you think? Live in Love 6
7 Jeannine Gramick: From Math Teacher to LGBT Advocate by Barbara Finley for Women Celebrating the Spirit After a gay man revealed to her the pain he experienced in the Catholic Church because of his sexual orientation, Sister Jeannine Gramick s ministry began a gradual change from mathematics teacher to LGBT advocate. In 1971, Gramick started her advocacy in Pennsylvania by organizing weekly religious services for a small group of lesbian and gay Catholics who had left the church because they felt unwelcome. There was this feeling of great exhilaration, great joy. We made them feel very loved, she said. In the late 1970s she moved to Washington D.C. where she and Rev. Robert Nugent, SDS, founded New Ways Ministries, which supported full inclusion of people with LGBT orientation in Christian and civic life. However, when New Ways Ministries was planning a national symposium on homosexuality, the archbishop of Washington D.C. insisted that they cancel it. In spite of his efforts, the meeting was held with over 200 people attending. Gramick was grateful to her order, the School Sisters of Notre Dame: Those superiors were women of vision. They stood by me. Gramick and Nugent continued their work writing, and hosting meetings, workshops, and retreats on behalf of LGBT Catholics. Finally in 1999, after a lengthy investigation, the Vatican prohibited both from engaging in this ministry. In response to the Vatican order, Nugent reluctantly left New Ways Ministry and returned to parish ministry. On the other hand, Gramick decided to leave her order and continue the LGBT ministry. While some see her work as disobedience to the Vatican, she sees it as following an informed conscience in obedience to God s call. I felt that what was being asked of me was unjust that lesbian and gay people are so marginalized in the Church that they need an advocate, Gramick said. In 2015, the group she led on a pilgrimage to Rome was given VIP seats to Pope Francis s weekly audience. It was a great feeling of vindication, almost a euphoria that this is how the church should be, she said. Sister Jeannine Gramick in support of Maryland's pro-lgbt marriage referendum at St. Mark s Episcopal Church in Silver Spring, Md., on Oct. 18, Washington Blade photo by Michael K. Lavers Sister Jeannine Gramick If you would like to know more about the issues of the LGBT community, we have at ministry here at Good Shepherd called Gay and Straight in Christ. It is, as the title indicates, a group of gay and straight people coming together, praying together, and supporting one another. For more information contact Ann Castiglione at
8 Health Bytes by Laverne Schoonover RN Your Green Corner by Mary Kult Why Get Your Blood Pressure checked? Knowing what your blood pressure is and keeping tabs on it on a regular basis is very important to maintain your health. WHY? Because untreated hypertension may cause many problems, including a heart attack or a stroke. Knowing your blood pressure values and keeping it within normal limits can be vital to maintaining optimal health. High blood pressure or HTM is not necessarily a result of the aging process, there are many other causes of it other than just getting older, keeping it within normal limits is vital to your health. Besides your regular doctor visits, why not take advantage of the service that our dedicated PARISH nurses offer you once a month after each first Saturday and Sunday Mass? Stop in the Chapel and let them check your blood pressure. It only takes a short time and could be very worth your while. Our next blood pressure checks will be done Saturday, April 7 after the 4:30 pm Mass and Sunday April 8 after the 8:30 am and the 11:00 am Masses. See you there! Yes, There are More Uses for Vinegar To get salt off your shoes and prevent long term damage, wipe fresh stains with a cloth dipped in undiluted white vinegar. Revitalize leather furniture by mixing equal parts white vinegar and boiled linseed oil in a spray bottle. Shake mixture well and spray on furniture. Spread it on evenly over the leather using a soft cloth, wait a couple of minutes, then rub it off with a clean cloth. Spring clean your microwave by placing a glass bowl with 1/4 cup vinegar in a cup of water inside for 5 minutes at highest heat setting. Once the liquid cools, dip a cloth into solution and wipe off stains and spatters. Smelly kitchen? Boil 1/2 cup vinegar in 1 cup water until liquid almost gone. Disinfect cutting boards by wiping them down with full strength white vinegar after each use. To remove coffee stains and other discolorations from china, scrub with equal parts of vinegar and salt and rinse under warm water. For quick cleaning, distilled vinegar is one of the best grease eliminators around. When cleaning frying pan, wash off splatters with a sponge dipped in vinegar. Then rinse off with another sponge soaked in cold water. Pour 3 to 4 Tablespoons vinegar into dishwashing liquid and give a few shakes. The vinegar will increase the detergent s grease fighting capabilities and make it last longer. Get grease off the broiler pan by softening it up with a solution of 1cup cider vinegar and 2 tablespoons of sugar. Apply the solution while the pan is still hot and let it sit for an hour or so.
