Grant to us, Lord, we beseech thee, the spirit to think and do always such things as are right, that we, who cannot exist without thee, may by thee be enabled to live according to thy will; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The First Lesson 2 Samuel 18:5-9, 15, The king ordered Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, "Deal gently for my sake with the young man Absalom." And all the people heard when the king gave orders to all the commanders concerning Absalom. So the army went out into the field against Israel; and the battle was fought in the forest of Ephraim. The men of Israel were defeated there by the servants of David, and the slaughter there was great on that day, twenty thousand men. The battle spread over the face of all the country; and the forest claimed more victims that day than the sword. Absalom happened to meet the servants of David. Absalom was riding on his mule, and the mule went under the thick branches of a great oak. His head 2

3 caught fast in the oak, and he was left hanging between heaven and earth, while the mule that was under him went on. And ten young men, Joab's armor-bearers, surrounded Absalom and struck him, and killed him. Then the Cushite came; and the Cushite said, "Good tidings for my lord the king! For the LORD has vindicated you this day, delivering you from the power of all who rose up against you." The king said to the Cushite, "Is it well with the young man Absalom?" The Cushite answered, "May the enemies of my lord the king, and all who rise up to do you harm, be like that young man." The king was deeply moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept; and as he went, he said, "O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! Would I had died instead of you, O Absalom, my son, my son!" Psalm Psalm Out of the depth have I called to you, O LORD; LORD, hear my voice;* let your ears consider well the voice of my supplication. 2 If you, LORD, were to note what is done amiss,* O Lord, who could stand? 3 For there is forgiveness with you;* therefore you shall be feared. 4 I wait for the LORD; my soul waits for him;* in his word is my hope. 5 My soul waits for the LORD, more than watchmen for the morning,* more than watchmen for the morning. 6 O Israel, wait for the LORD,* for with the LORD there is mercy; 7 With him there is plenteous redemption,* and he shall redeem Israel from all their sins. 3

4 The Second Lesson Ephesians 4:25-5:2 So then, putting away falsehood, let all of us speak the truth to our neighbors, for we are members of one another. Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not make room for the devil. Thieves must give up stealing; rather let them labor and work honestly with their own hands, so as to have something to share with the needy. Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only what is useful for building up, as there is need, so that your words may give grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were marked with a seal for the day of redemption. Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you. Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God who will redeem Israel from all its iniquities. Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. Then the Jews began to complain about him because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven." They were saying, "Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, 'I have come down from heaven'?" Jesus answered them, "Do not complain among yourselves. No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me; and I will raise that person up on the last day. It is written in the prophets, 'And they shall all be taught by God.' 4

5 Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. The Sermon The Very Reverend Stacy Walker-Frontjes The Nicene Creed Pages Prayers of the for the Eleventh Sunday of Pentecost Sisters and brothers, confident in God s love in Jesus Christ, let us pray for the world and for our needs, saying: hear our prayer. God, you have called forth the church to embody your way of life. Help those who profess faith in Christ to be faithful disciples and live according to your Word. For all who follow Jesus Christ, Strengthen our church s leaders, especially Katharine, our Presiding Bishop, Michael, our Presiding Bishop Elect, Jeff our Diocesan Bishop, Chris our Assisting Bishop, and our priest, Stacy.*For the congregations of Rockhampton in Queensland, Australia, and our companion dioceses of Southeast Mexico and Renk in the South Sudan; and for congregations in the Waukegan Deanery: St. Ignatius of Antioch in Antioch; St. Mary in Crystal 5

6 Lake; St. Gregory in Deerfield; St. Andrew in Grayslake; Annunciation of Our Lady in Gurnee. Your children imitate you by speaking truth, showing forgiveness, and dwelling together in loving community. For our neighbors and our neighborhoods, that we may live in peace and justice, God, our civic leaders face daily challenges and temptations. For government officials, that they may have integrity of heart and wisdom of judgment in their performance of public service, We pray especially for our President, Barak, and our Governor, Bruce. God, the people of earth hunger for the spiritual food you provide that gives meaning to life. But many also hunger for good bread, for safe drinking water, and for the bare necessities of life. For those who struggle against the dehumanizing power of poverty, and for those who pursue justice in the sharing of earth s resources, 6

7 God, your world is filled with the delights of natural beauty, but also with danger of natural disaster. For the planet Earth, our home, that people may dwell in peace with the land, honoring its beauty, conserving its resources, and respecting its power, We pray for the sick and those facing difficult situations. May Christ dwell in their hearts through faith, and may they know that they are rooted and grounded in love. We pray especially for Alan and Brenda, June, Laura, Paula Hofer, Jan Kuntz, Jim, Margaret Johnson, Betsey and Family, Kurt, Gretta May, Jan, Kara, Jim and Ryan, and Kurt, Gail, Shelton, Aleta and Dale, Eva Leonard, Lisa and Breanna, Marie and Family, Jasmine and Martin, Jenifer and Mike, Brad and Jean, Jasmine and Chris, Cindy, Kathleen, Amy and Andrew, Mr. Burgess, Tanner and family, Lisa Allison, Bob and Joan Brown, Pastor Fred deoliveira. The host is placed in your open hands; please assist in guiding the chalice to your lips, or dip the host in the wine. We have gluten free hosts available, ask the priest at the rail. It is acceptable to receive only the bread or the wine. If you would rather not receive communion, you are invited to come to the rail for a blessing. Simply cross your arms over your chest and the priest will say a prayer for you. Farewell to Sue Ouellette Today will be the last Sunday that Sue Ouellette will be attending at St. Paul s before moving to the Rochester NY area for a year long clinical pastoral education program at Strong Memorial Hospital. There will be a farewell cake and coffee reception during the 11:30 A.M. Coffee Hour after the 10:30 A.M. service to thank her for her contributions and wish her well. Join Us this Wednesday, August 12th for Mid-Week Holy Eucharist with Prayers for Healing All are welcome to join us Wednesdays for a quiet service of Holy Communion with healing prayers. The service begins at 9:30A.M. and never lasts longer than 30 minutes. We meet in the chapel next to the Parish Hall. Enter through the North doors or the Kitchen door. The reading for this Wednesday, August 12th, is the proper for Florence Nightingale from the Holy Women, Holy Men" book. Thrive Market and Garden The third Thrive Market will take place this Saturday, August 15 th. We will need volunteers. There are sign up sheets in the Parish Hall to help with the Markets. Garden nights continue on Tuesday nights at 6:30 P.M. (unless the weather is inclement). The next Thrive Market date is Saturday, September 19 th. 12

13 The Annual Picnic is Coming Save the date of August 23! The service will be held outside at 10:30 A.M. and will be followed by an outdoor picnic. Bring backpacks for the Blessing of the Backpacks! Childcare will be provided and games will be available for the children at the picnic. There is a sign up sheet in the Parish Hall. This is Food Pantry Sunday! Although any contribution is most welcome, we are choosing one particular item as a priority each month. For the month of August, the priority is diapers--size 4 and up. Contributions may be made at any time during the month, not just today. We hope that everyone will participate, even in a small way. Summer Service Ministries Try Something New How is God calling you to serve today? To take on a role in today s 10:30 AM service, simply take up the nametag for that role. There are instructions for each posted. The Crucifer/Acolyte will process in with the Priest and the Eucharistic Minister will join the Priest at Communion time. If you are thinking of reading and want to see the passages for the morning ahead of time, the Sunday bulletin is posted on the website, by Wednesday mornings. New Service Schedule Beginning August 23 rd with the Annual Picnic and continuing until Rev. Stacy returns form Sabbatical on November 29 th, there will only be the one 10:30 A.M. Service. Sunday School for adults and children will begin on September 13 th and continue at 9:15 A.M. during this time. 13

15 Household Prayer: Morning Loving God, as I break the fast of evening rest give me an appetite for your good gifts. Let my hunger be satisfied with the nourishing bread of life you offer in Jesus Christ, that I may receive strength for the journey this day holds. Amen. Household Prayer: Evening Lord Christ, you are the bread that has sustained me. Let me rest in peace, trusting that the grace you have given me for this day will be renewed like manna in the wilderness, nourishment for the challenge of tomorrow and confirmation of the promise of eternal life.
