St. Paul s Vision Statement: We pray that our hearts may be opened to seek the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to be the church and the Christians that God is calling us to be. 3 The Collect of the Day The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. We sit to hear the lessons. The First Lesson Acts 16:16-34 One day, as we were going to the place of prayer, we met a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners a great deal of money by fortunetelling. While she followed Paul and us, she would cry out, "These men are slaves of the Most High God, who proclaim to you a way of salvation." She kept doing this for many days. But Paul, very much annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, "I order you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her." And it came out that very hour. But when her owners saw that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the authorities. When they had brought them before the magistrates, they said, "These men are disturbing our city; they are Jews and are advocating customs that are not lawful for us as Romans to adopt or observe." The crowd joined in attacking them, and the magistrates had them stripped of their clothing and ordered them to be beaten with rods. After they had given them a severe flogging, they threw them into prison and ordered the jailer to keep them securely. Following these instructions, he put them in the innermost cell and fastened their feet in the stocks. 3

4 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was an earthquake, so violent that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone's chains were unfastened. When the jailer woke up and saw the prison doors wide open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, since he supposed that the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted in a loud voice, "Do not harm yourself, for we are all here." The jailer called for lights, and rushing in, he fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. Then he brought them outside and said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" They answered, "Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household." They spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. At the same hour of the night he took them and washed their wounds; then he and his entire family were baptized without delay. He brought them up into the house and set food before them; and he and his entire household rejoiced that he had become a believer in God. Lector The Word of the Lord. Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they will have the right to the tree of life and may enter the city by the gates. "It is I, Jesus, who sent my angel to you with this testimony for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star." The Spirit and the bride say, "Come." And let everyone who hears say, "Come." And let everyone who is thirsty come. Let anyone who wishes take the water of life as a gift. 7 We stand to affirm our faith by reciting the Nicene Creed. The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 7

8 Prayers of the for The Seventh Sunday of Easter Our Lord Jesus prayed for us that we might be one. Let us pray as one for the needs of the world, for the church, and for all with whom Jesus desires our unity, saying, Holy God, hear our prayer. God, our lifeblood and our light, you show us your new creation every day. You feed and clothe us and give us joy in your good earth. We praise you our home and our true blessing. Silence Holy God, hear our prayer. For the church s mission to proclaim the good news, that the world might know you; may the new life possible in faith break open all people to love one another. For the well-being of the earth and its creatures; for the oceans and rivers, heavens and depths, soil and dust; for plants and fish and birds and mammals, who together with ourselves are fed and blessed each day by the air, food, and water you provide. For all people who cry out to you in this hardened time; for people who do not have work, those who have no safety net; those without dining tables or beds; those who do not have enough food. Silence Holy God, hear our prayer. On this Mother s Day, we give thanks to God for the divine gift of motherhood in all its diverse forms. Let us pray for all the mothers among us today; for our own mothers, those living and those who have passed away; for the mothers who loved us and for those who fell short of loving us fully; for all who hope to be mothers someday and for those who hope to have children has been frustrated; for all mothers who have lost children; for all women and men who have mothered others in any way those who have been our substitute mothers and we who have done so for those in need; and for the earth that bore us and provides us with our sustenance. 9

13 The Great Thanksgiving Eucharistic Prayer A It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. But chiefly are we bound to praise you for the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us, and has taken away the sin of the world. By his death he has destroyed death, and by his rising to life again he has won for us everlasting life. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: 13

17 The Episcopal Church invites all Christians to receive communion. The host is placed in your open hands; please assist in guiding the chalice to your lips, or dip the host in the wine. We have gluten free hosts available, ask the priest at the rail. It is acceptable to receive only the bread or the wine. If you would rather not receive communion, you are invited to come to the rail for a blessing. Simply cross your arms over your chest and the priest will say a prayer for you. 21 Announcements Welcome! If you are worshipping here for the first time, please sign our guest book. You are welcome to join us for refreshments after the service in the Parish Hall. Communion Bread Baking Sunday, Today Just a few weeks remain in the current Sunday School program year - "Recognition Sunday" is May 22nd! The students will bake the bread for communion today, May 8. The Lobsters are Coming! Go to our website and Buy Online Now! Lobster Boil is Saturday May 21. It s coming up fast! We need your help. Signup sheets and flyers will be available today in the Parish Hall: please volunteer to work with one of the teams on Lobster Boil Day and take flyers to distribute. Ordering can be done on the website and on the Lobster Phone now! New Sunday Schedule The last 8:00 AM service on Sundays will be on May 15 th. Sunday School for adults and children will still begin at 9:15 AM and the 10:30 AM service will also remain at the same time. The new schedule will begin May 22 nd. We will schedule Rite I at the 10:30 AM service from time to time. Visit from the Islamic Society on May 14 th Last February we were invited to get to know our neighbors at the mosque of the Islamic Society of NIU/DeKalb. We have invited the members of the mosque for a return visit on Saturday, May 14 th, at 1:30 PM. We could a few partners to bring refreshments and share some of the history of this congregation. Sunday School and Graduate Recognition Day The Sunday School program year is coming to a close. We will be having Sunday School and Graduate Recognition Day on Sunday, May 22nd at the 10:30 AM service. Please contact the Parish Office by May 15th to let us know if you have any people graduating from high school or a degree program that you would like to be recognized. Plant the Garden Sunday May 22 will be the celebration of Plant the Garden Sunday. We ll be planting seeds in the children s garden and front beds as well as some seeds in the main garden after the 10:30 AM service. Join us immediately following the service for a special prayer of blessing over the garden beds. Wear your blue jeans or other garden attire if you would like to help plant after the prayers. Bring the kids in play clothes so they can plant their very own garden. Pentecost is Next Week, May 15th Wear the bright colors of the Spirit reds, yellows or oranges. Join Us on Third Wednesdays for Mid-Week Holy Eucharist with Prayers for Healing All are welcome to join us Wednesdays for a quiet service of Holy Communion with healing prayers. The service begins at 9:30A.M. and never lasts longer than 30 minutes. We meet in the chapel next to the Parish Hall. Enter through the North doors or the Kitchen door. The next Healing Service will on May 18th,

23 Food Pantry Collection is Today, May 8th Parishioners are reminded that today, May 8th, will be Food Pantry Sunday. There is no specified priority item this month, but canned pet food, diapers (4 and up), canned fruit and canned beans are always needed. Fresh fruit such as apples or oranges are also welcome. Please place your donations in the baskets provided. No glass jars, please. Contributions may be made at any time during the month, not just on the 8th. We hope that everyone will participate, even in a small way.
