St. Paul s Episcopal Church St. Paul's is an affirming and inclusive Christian community striving through worship, love and service to welcome all people just as God created you. All are welcome, no exceptions! Second Sunday after Pentecost Proper 4 June 3, :30 A.M.

The Liturgy of the Word We stand to sing and pray. Processional Hymn # 7 Christ, whose glory fills the skies Blessed be God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. Gloria in excelsis: Glory to God S 280 2

The Collect of the Day Proper 4 The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. O God, your never-failing providence sets in order all things both in heaven and earth: Put away from us, we entreat you, all hurtful things, and give us those things which are profitable for us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. We sit to hear the lessons. 3

The First Lesson 1 Samuel 3:1-10(11-20) Lector A reading from the Book of Samuel. Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the LORD under Eli. The word of the LORD was rare in those days; visions were not widespread. At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room; the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was. Then the LORD called, Samuel! Samuel! and he said, Here I am! and ran to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you called me. But he said, I did not call; lie down again. So he went and lay down. The LORD called again, Samuel! Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you called me. But he said, I did not call, my son; lie down again. Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, and the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him. The LORD called Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you called me. Then Eli perceived that the LORD was calling the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. Now the LORD came and stood there, calling as before, Samuel! Samuel! And Samuel said, Speak, for your servant is listening. [Then the LORD said to Samuel, See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make both ears of anyone who hears of it tingle. On that day I will fulfill against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. For I have told him that I am about to 4

punish his house forever, for the iniquity that he knew, because his sons were blaspheming God, and he did not restrain them. Therefore I swear to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli s house shall not be expiated by sacrifice or offering forever. Samuel lay there until morning; then he opened the doors of the house of the LORD. Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli. But Eli called Samuel and said, Samuel, my son. He said, Here I am. Eli said, What was it that he told you? Do not hide it from me. May God do so to you and more also, if you hide anything from me of all that he told you. So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. Then he said, It is the LORD; let him do what seems good to him. As Samuel grew up, the LORD was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. And all Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was a trustworthy prophet of thelord.] Lector The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God Psalm 139:1-5,12-17 Lector Let us read sections of Psalm 139 together. 1 LORD, you have searched me out and known me; * you know my sitting down and my rising up; you discern my thoughts from afar. 2 You trace my journeys and my resting-places * and are acquainted with all my ways. 5

3 Indeed, there is not a word on my lips, * but you, O LORD, know it altogether. 4 You press upon me behind and before * and lay your hand upon me. 5 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; * it is so high that I cannot attain to it. 12 For you yourself created my inmost parts; * you knit me together in my mother's womb. 13 I will thank you because I am marvelously made; * your works are wonderful, and I know it well. 14 My body was not hidden from you, * while I was being made in secret and woven in the depths of the earth. 15 Your eyes beheld my limbs, yet unfinished in the womb; all of them were written in your book; * they were fashioned day by day, when as yet there was none of them. 16 How deep I find your thoughts, O God! * how great is the sum of them! 17 If I were to count them, they would be more in number than the sand; * to count them all, my life span would need to be like yours. 6

The Second Lesson 2 Corinthians 4:5-12 Lector A reading from the Paul s letter to the Corinthians. We do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus sake. For it is the God who said, Let light shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies. For while we live, we are always being given up to death for Jesus sake, so that the life of Jesus may be made visible in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you. Lector The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God We stand to sing and hear the Gospel. 7

Gradual Hymn # 440 Blessed Jesus, at thy word The Gospel Mark 2:23-3:6 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to you, Lord Christ. One sabbath Jesus and his disciples were going through the grainfields; and as they made their way his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. The Pharisees said to him, Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the sabbath? And he said to them, Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need of food? He entered the house of God, when Abiathar was high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and he gave some to his companions. Then he said to them, The sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the sabbath; so the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath. Again he entered the synagogue, and a man was there who had a withered hand. They watched him to see whether he would cure him on the sabbath, so that they might accuse him. And he said to the man who had the withered hand, Come forward. Then he said to them, Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the sabbath, to save life or to kill? But they were silent. He looked around at them with anger; he was grieved at their hardness of heart and said to the man, Stretch out your hand. He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. The Pharisees went out and immediately conspired with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him. 8

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Sermon The Reverend Ed Bird Silence for meditation The Nicene Creed We stand to affirm our faith by reciting the Nicene Creed. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 9

We also will pray weekly for churches and ministries in the Diocese of Chicago and our Companion Dioceses as part of the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer. The Confession of Sin Let us confess our sins to the Lord, for God forgives and heals us. Silence (kneel or stand) 12

In Unison We need your healing, Merciful God; give us true repentance. Some sins are plain to us; some escape us, some we cannot face. Forgive us; set us free to hear your word to us; set us free to serve you. God forgives you. Forgive others; forgive yourself. Through Christ, God has put away your sin; approach your God and one another in peace. We stand for the pronouncement of the Peace The Peace The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. The Offertory Then we greet one another saying, Peace be with you. Announcements The Holy Communion I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the mercy of God, To present yourselves as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, Which is your spiritual worship (Romans 12:1) Offertory Hymn # 567 Thine arm, O Lord, in days of old Doxology Hymn # 380 v. 3 13

Sursum Corda The Great Thanksgiving Eucharistic Prayer C The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, you are worthy of glory and praise. Glory to you for ever and ever. At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home. 14

By your will they were created and have their being. From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. You made us the rulers of creation. But we turned against you, and betrayed your trust; and we turned against one another. Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight. Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets and sages you revealed your righteous Law. And in the fullness of time you sent your only Son, born of a woman, to fulfill your Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace. By his blood, he reconciled us. By his wounds, we are healed. And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, to proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn: Sanctus: S114 Holy, holy, holy Lord 15

We remain standing or kneel And so, we who have been redeemed by him, and made a new people by water and the Spirit, now bring before you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord. On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me." After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me." Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of thanksgiving, We celebrate his death and resurrection, as we await the day of his coming. Lord God of our Fathers and Mothers: God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; God of Sarah, Rachel, Rebecca and Leah; God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at work in the world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we 16

may worthily serve the world in his name. Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread. Accept these prayers and praises, Father, through Jesus Christ our great High, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, your Church gives honor, glory, and worship, from generation to generation. AMEN. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, In Unison Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread Silence is observed after the bread is broken. Fraction Anthem: S 158 Agnus Dei: O Lamb of God 17

Communion Hymn # 655 O Jesus, I have promised Prayer after Communion When all have received Communion, the leads the following prayer: Let us pray. In Unison Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image and nourishing us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of Christ s Body and Blood. Now send us forth a people, forgiven, healed, renewed; that we may proclaim your love to the world and continue in the risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen. 18

Please stand.
