3 Acquiring Super Powers Greetings in Christ! Comic book writer Stan Lee passed away last month. If you are unfamiliar with the name, you are likely to be familiar with some of his creations like Spider-Man, Captain America, Hulk, and a group of them called the Avengers, to name a few. He was perhaps the most influential person in creating the Marvel Universe at Marvel Comics. In short, whether you knew him or not, you knew of him. I didn t read comic books as a kid. In fact, I only started paying attention to comic book characters when their movies started coming out in earnest over the past 20 or so years. The storylines are intriguing, the lessons are uplifting and applicable to daily life, and the characters are relatable. And about those characters The vast majority of the superheroes Stan Lee created started out as just ordinary people like you and me. They were not from outer space, like Superman of the DC Comics realm, but humans and flawed humans at that. Tony Stark is a narcissistic playboy and drunk, Bruce Banner is a weak recluse, Stephen Strange is an egotistical surgeon, Peter Parker is an orphan who is responsible for his guardian and uncle being murdered. Yet, despite these flaws, they end up becoming superheroes, overcoming these obstacles and serving others for the greater good: Tony Stark becomes Iron Man, Bruce Banner becomes the Hulk, Stephen Strange becomes Dr. Strange, and Peter Parker becomes Spider-Man. They all use the special powers they have acquired to overcome their flaws and help humanity around them. When they band together in teams, such as the Avengers or the Justice League, they are an even stronger force to be reckoned with. This sounds a lot like what we Christians have been called to do. We all have our own flaws to overcome, what may be called our temptations, or what the Church calls Passions. They may not be so exaggerated as being narcissistic, egotistical, or responsible for another s misfortune, but even nagging temptations can become a source of frustration in our spiritual life, leading us to spiritual apathy, or worse, separation from Christ and His Church. Rather, we are called to overcome these temptations, these passions. But what is the superpower that we can use? Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! He offers us superpowers through His Church in the form of the sacraments, and most importantly through His Body and Blood in the Eucharist. Through the sacraments we obtain the ability to overcome our sins. We become a force to be reckoned with in the world. And when we band together as a team, we become even stronger. This team is called the Church, and it doesn t just include us, but all the Saints who have gone before us. As members of the Orthodox Church, we are the most powerful force in the universe. With Love in Christ, [Abba Nilus] also said, Do not be always wanting everything to turn out as you think it should, but rather as God pleases; then you will be undisturbed and thankful in your prayer. The Sayings of the Desert Fathers A brother came to see Abba Poemen and said to him, Abba, I have many thoughts and they put me in danger. The old man led him outside and said to him, Expand your chest, but do not breathe in. He said, I cannot do that. The old man said to him, If you cannot do that, no more can you prevent thoughts from arising, but you can resist them. The Sayings of the Desert Fathers Rev. Father Simon Thomas Parish Priest

4 President s Message December 2018 As I think about all the tasks that I must complete in preparation of our Thanksgiving feast, I can t help but think about those who may not have the means to have a meal. There are some who have no one to have a meal with. At times like this, I am reminded of just how much the Lord has blessed me and my family. All the other problems and issues then take a back seat to what is truly important. I will be thankful for my family and friends who sit around our table on Thursday and thank God that He has put each one into my life. I cannot believe that December is upon us so soon. It doesn t seem that long ago that we were congratulating our graduates. Yes, I do realize that the weather makes a convincing argument about what time of year it is. I do enjoy this time of year for its natural beauty. My office is located on the third floor of my home and lets me look out over the rooftops of the adjacent homes to see the pallet of colors that the trees have created. There is nothing that we can create that compares to the work that God can do. For that reason, we should prepare ourselves for the feast day of the Nativity of Christ. Instead of fighting the masses for the sale items, or spending hours at the computer ordering things that we may or may not need, lets spend a few moments thinking about the miracle of the birth of our Lord. Let us give a little of ourselves to the less fortunate. I mean, how can you walk past the red kettle with the nice folks ringing that bell? I am looking forward to seeing the Nativity story unfold before our eyes in the church when our young people re-enact the event. I don t know about you, but this gets me every year. I am so impressed by the accomplishments of the students along with the Greek school as they sing the hymns, play their instruments and sing the carols. Mark your calendars for December 16 to see this amazing event. As the year ends, I look back on all that we have accomplished this past year. The two events that have made the most impact on this community are the completion of the icon screen and the addition of a Pastoral assistant. Both have made a transformation in this community that will be present for many years to come. There were numerous other maintenance events that occurred that I will not bore you with. We have also approved the amendments to our by-laws which will guide the way that the council goes about the day to day operation of running the business side of the church. We as a community have come a long way in a year, and I hope that under the new council and new leadership, that we continue to make progress and grow our ministries that allow us to serve the Lord. I pray that all of you have a blessed Nativity feast and that the blessings of the Lord be upon you and your families. 6 The Holy Archdeacon Stephen, the First Martyr December 27th The Holy Protomartyr and Archdeacon Stephen was the eldest of the seven deacons, appointed by the Apostles themselves, and therefore he is called archdeacon. He was the first Christian martyr, and he suffered for Christ when he was about thirty. In the words of Asterias, he was the starting point of the martyrs, the instructor of suffering for Christ, the foundation of righteous confession, since Stephen was the first to shed his blood for the Gospel. Filled with the Holy Spirit, Saint Stephen preached Christianity and defeated Jewish teachers of the Law in debate. The Jews maligned Saint Stephen, saying that he had uttered blasphemy against God and against Moses. Saint Stephen came before the Sanhedrin and the High Priest to answer these charges. He gave a fiery speech, in which he recounted the history of the Jewish nation, and denounced the Jews for persecuting the prophets, and also for executing the promised Messiah, Jesus Christ (Acts chapter 7). During his speech, Saint Stephen suddenly saw the heavens opened and Jesus Christ standing at the right hand of God. The Jews shouted and covered their ears, and rushed at him. They dragged him out of the city and stoned him, but the holy martyr prayed for his murderers. Far off on the heights stood the Mother of God with the holy Apostle John the Theologian, and she prayed fervently for the martyr. Before his death Saint Stephen said, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. O Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. Then he joyfully gave up his pure soul to Christ. Acts 8:2 says Godly men buried Stephen and mourned deeply for him. The body of the holy Protomartyr Stephen, left to be eaten by beasts, was secretly taken up by the Jewish teacher Gamaliel and his son Habib, who buried Stephen on his estate. They both believed in Christ, and later received holy Baptism. The Greek Orthodox Church of Saint Stephen was built outside the eastern gate of the city, which tradition holds to be site of his martyrdom. The relics of the protomartyr were later translated to Rome by Pope Pelagius II during the construction of the basilica of San Lorenzo fuori le Mura. They were interred alongside the relics of Saint Lawrence, whose tomb is enshrined within the church. Saint Stephen is also commemorated on August 2 (Translation of his relics) and on September 15 (Uncovering of his relics in the year 415).

8 Book Review by Billy Benson The Gurus, the Young Man, and Elder Paisios by Dionysios Farasiotis St Herman of Alaska Brotherhood This is a story of a young Greek man who came of age in the turbulent times of the late 60 s, and his decades search for truth. Though being raised in the secularism of modern thought as a child, his desire for truth was strong. As he matured he sought and studied the philosophies familiar with the times he lived, but even then he felt something was missing from his life. He began experimenting in the eastern mysticism that had begun to gain acceptance, seeking and searching. It was then that he and some friends decided to visit Mount Athos. Though he was unfamiliar with Mount Athos, he and his friends went to see the sights, wander, and enjoy the free room and board that the monks of Athos offered. It was here that he encountered Elder (now Saint) Paisios, who was to have an impact on his search for truth. After a time of discussion with the Elder, his attitude towards both Christ and Christianity began to change. Though he had encountered truth, his mind refused to accept it as the fullness, seeing it instead only as the partial truth. This book then goes on to describe his journey for the fullness of truth, taking him in his mid-twenties to the ashrams of India, seeking and experiencing Hinduism and the stark contrast it bears when held to the light of the Orthodox Faith. The detail that the reader will see in both the allure of the religion and the subsequent dangers that are in the eastern Hindi yogis may be frightening at times. The internal and external struggles of the young man will provide an understanding of the difficulties of breaking loose from the bonds of eastern mysticism. And the continual love of Elder Paisios towards this young man will inspire the reader, bringing an understanding of how God can rescue, repair, and bring anew the life that he has created us to live. I found it is not an easy book to read, the material and depth of explanation can be uncomfortable at times. But I found joy in the example that Saint Paisios and the other monks of Athos gave as they showed love to this young man while at the same time respecting his freewill. Though this book is not suitable for younger readers, I do feel it is a good book for those who may be thinking of seeking outside the Orthodox Faith, especially if that seeking involves the dangers of eastern religions. I also suggest that this book be read under the guidance of your father confessor so that the reader can ask questions that will arise while reading this book. Saint Paisios of the Holy Mountain

31 This Christmas night, peace was bestowed on the whole world; So, let no one threaten; This is the night of the Most Gentle One Let no one be cruel; This is the night of the Most Humble One Let no one be proud. Now is the day of joy Let us not revenge; Now is the day of good will Let us not be mean. In this day of peace let us not be conquered by anger Today, the Bountiful One, impoverished Himself for our sake; So, you rich ones, invite the poor to your table. Today we received a Gift, for which we did not ask; So let us give alms to those who implore us and beg. This present day casts open the heavenly door to our prayers Let us open our door to those who ask our forgiveness. Now the Divine Being took upon Himself the seal of humanity, In order for humanity to be decorated by the seal of Divinity. -The Christmas Sermon of Saint Isaac of Nineveh
