1 The Epistle September 2016 Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church Rev. Father Simon Thomas, Pastor Rev. Father Nicholas Vieron, Pastor Emeritus 573 N. Highland St. / Memphis, TN (901) / fax (901) annunciationmemphis@gmail.com/ 43 rd Biennial Clergy-Laity Congress in Nashville Respectfully Submitted by Father Simon Thomas The 43 rd Biennial Clergy- Laity Congress (CLC) in Nashville was the fifth congress I have attended. While the congress itself was generally a standard congress, with the usual meetings and discussions, there were a few things that did stand out: Hierarchical Interaction with the Laity While the clergy have regular interactions with the bishops of the church, especially their own hierarch(s), the laypeople rarely see any bishop but their own, and even his visits are infrequent. At the CLC, on top of running into them in the hallways, there were several scheduled opportunities for everyone to interact with and hear from the various hierarchs of the Archdiocese. Monday morning each hierarch had a break-out session with select delegates. Tuesday was a presentation on the Great & Holy Council with the attending hierarchs. Thursday gave an opportunity for many of the hierarchs to comment during the plenary session, culminating in the Grand Banquet. Celebrating the Divine Liturgy As one of the local clergy, I was asked to celebrate the Divine Liturgy on Wednesday morning. While that meant waking up extra early, it was an honor and joy to celebrate this service. Adding to the joy was having the sisters of the Orthodox group Eikona chanting the service. However, most joyful was seeing how many people came to Liturgy in the middle of this busy and tiring week, including many of our parishioners. The Activities Although Nashville may be fairly familiar to Memphians, it is a target destination for many across the country for its various attractions. Staying at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel, a Divine Liturgy celebrated at the Grand Ole Opry, a spectacular fireworks display while cruising the Cumberland River aboard the General Jackson Showboat, and a dinner with a Jonathan Jackson concert at the Parthenon were all scheduled events. I did introduce a few of my clergy brethren and their families to the food and music of Broadway Street. The Business It was not all play and no work, as there were dozens of meetings and presentations scheduled, along with an exhibition hall to purchase goods and services. 3 President s Message September President s Message Happy New Year! No I haven t lost my mind, although some would argue that point. We begin a new year in the life of the church. As our children begin their school year again in a new grade, how fitting is it that we begin a new cycle in the church. We will see the lazy days of summer give way to the bustle of fall activities and luncheons in the church. I attended the Clergy Laity conference in Nashville over the July 4 th week. I would like to report that the fireworks in Nashville are quite spectacular. If you ever have the opportunity to see them, I highly recommend doing so. The conference went well and the highlight was hearing from Archbishop Demetrios and 4 of our Metropolitans who were present at the Great Council. I feel different somehow realizing that we are living in a time when history has been made. I beg your forgiveness. I had intended to schedule some work sessions to do clean-up work around the church over the summer. I must have blinked because it seems that summer has come and gone. The work dates will still be scheduled so please be watching for them soon. On September 18 th, come join us at Houston High for our annual community softball game and picnic. We used to have an old men vs young men game, but it has transitioned since most of the young men have gone on to college and their careers and the old men have matured more than they would like to admit. (I speak for myself here) I look forward to seeing all of you back now that vacations have ended and we get back into our regular routines. In His Service Ted Poplos Annunciation Prayer List Pray for one another, that you may be healed (James 5:16). Prayer is an important resource for those who are in need. 5 The Holy Martyr Sophia, and her Daughters Faith, Hope & Love September 17th The Holy Martyrs Saint Sophia and her Daughters Faith, Hope and Love were born in Italy. Their mother was a pious Christian widow who named her daughters for the three Christian virtues. Faith was twelve, Hope was ten, and Love was nine. Saint Sophia raised them in the love of the Lord Jesus Christ. Saint Sophia and her daughters did not hide their faith in Christ, but openly confessed it before everyone. An official named Antiochus denounced them to the emperor Hadrian, who ordered that they be brought to Rome. Realizing that they would be taken before the emperor, the holy virgins prayed fervently to the Lord Jesus Christ, asking that He give them the strength not to fear torture and death. When the holy virgins and their mother came before the emperor, everyone present was amazed at their composure. They looked as though they had been brought to some happy festival, rather than to torture. Summoning each of the sisters in turn, Hadrian urged them to offer sacrifice to the goddess Artemis. The young girls remained unyielding. Then the emperor ordered them to be tortured. They burned the holy virgins over an iron grating, then threw them into a red-hot oven, and finally into a cauldron with boiling tar, but the Lord preserved them. The youngest child, Love, was tied to a wheel and they beat her with rods until her body was covered all over with bloody welts. After undergoing unspeakable torments, the holy virgins glorified their Heavenly Bridegroom and remained steadfast in the Faith. The emperor subjected Saint Sophia to another grievous torture: the mother was forced to watch the suffering of her daughters. She displayed adamant courage, and urged her daughters to endure their torments for the sake of the Heavenly Bridegroom. All three maidens were beheaded, and joyfully bent their necks beneath the sword. In order to intensify Saint Sophia s inner suffering, the emperor permitted her to take the bodies of her daughters. She placed their remains in coffins and loaded them on a wagon. She drove beyond the city limits and reverently buried them on a high hill. Saint Sophia sat there by the graves of her daughters for three days, and finally she gave up her soul to the Lord. Even though she did not suffer for Christ in the flesh, she was not deprived of a martyr s crown. Instead, she suffered in her heart. Believers buried her body there beside her daughters. The relics of the holy martyrs have rested at the women s monastery in Eschau, Alcese in France since the year 777. 7 2016 CLERGY-LAITY CONGRESS REPORTS Parish Council President s Report from Clergy Laity 2016 It was an honor to represent Annunciation Memphis at the clergy laity congress in Nashville. I ran into old friends and made some new ones. It is always interesting to learn that we all share the same problems in our communities and can share our solutions together to look for new and unique ways to solve them. I can t say that there is any one magic solution, but the energy and enthusiasm of the participants as they left was truly noticeable. I know that I always come away with a renewed energy and look forward to being able to share it within our community. It was awesome to participate in a Liturgy with the entire leadership of the Greek Orthodox Church celebrating at the Grand Old Opry. I will go out on a limb here and say that this was a first for this event. The highlight of the conference was the session reviewing the Great Council that took place in Crete. This is the first council of this kind in over 1200 years. It was fascinating to hear from 4 Metropolitans and the Archbishop who were present for the deliberations and discussion. It was as if listening to modern history (and this will be history) as they spoke and shared their experiences. I am sure that Metropolitan Nicholas will be glad to share some of his stories when he visits next. I focused most of my attention on the youth workshops which talked about the Youth Protection Policy which will be implemented in There will definitely be some changes to the way that we interact with our youth and Sunday school students, but they are changes that are needed to ensure that our young people not only feel safe but are truly safe within the church and all of the events sponsored by the church to further their spiritual education. As more information comes forth, I will be sharing that with you in my upcoming Presidents messages and in future assemblies. It is my hope that many more from our community have the opportunity to attend one of these conferences and have a chance to experience for yourself the excitement, the spirituality, the friendship and the fun. In His Service Ted Poplos Delegate Report for Demetra Bitinis from Clergy-Laity 2016 To my dearest Annunciation Spiritual, I wish to start out by saying thank you for allowing me to represent our parish at the 43 rd Biennial Clergy-Laity Congress in Nashville. The theme of the Congress was You are the Voice of Christ in a Changing World. As the Father has sent me, so I sent you. (John 20:21). I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to attend my 4 th CLC, in which I was able to reconnect with precious friends and loved ones from across the country that I have not seen in many years. My first morning was spent worshipping at the Hierarchal Divine Liturgy which took place at the grand Ole Opry House. This was my most favorite experience because without the Liturgy we would not need a Congress. Next to this would have to be an A. M. Liturgy in the Chapel room which happened to be celebrated by our very own Father Simon and the changing was done by Eikona, the well-known, talented and beautiful three sisters who are all married to Priests. It was glorious. Beginning on the first day I heard mention of the Holy Spirit being present and I truly felt that presence on the many long walks throughout the hotel, in the meetings, restaurants, at the evening events and in the elevators and hallways. There was also immense enthusiasm over the Great and Holy Synod that had just taken place in Crete, which was the first one to convene in over 1,200 years. Additionally, I felt like there was a wonderful

8 energy flowing into all areas of the congress. I came to realize how important it is for all of us to support the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox National Shrine at the World Trade Center. The world will be witnessing Orthodoxy through our stewardship in the building of the Sacred site. We, as Orthodox Christians, have a huge responsibility to stay unified, a work I kept hearing repeated over and over again. We are all called to be the Voice of Christ in a changing world. Therefore we need to learn more about our faith and be ready and willing to share it with others anywhere and everywhere and everything we do must come from a place of love. I hope I learned something that I might share with you all that will help me as well as you to better serve our Beloved Annunciation Church. In closing I remembered ten years ago at the my first Clergy-Laity Congress thinking about how all Muslims are called to the Hajj, a pilgrimage to Mecca that is a mandatory religious duty, at least once in their lifetime. Wouldn t it be nice if it were possible for each Orthodox Christian to attend a Clergy-Laity Congress at some point in his or her life. I can hardly express my overwhelming joy and elation at being in the presence of our Archbishop, Metropolitans, 0ver 300 priests, deacons, musicians, as well as our wonderful Presvyteras and all the Laity who attended. In unity and love we made our best efforts to gain instruction and knowledge of our precious and Ancient Faith to bring home to share with our individual communities. Thank you all once again for the honor of representing you. I hope in the future we can all become the Voice of Christ in a Changing World. With love in Christ, Demie Bitinis Delegate Report for Richard T. Tobias, DDS from Clergy-Laity 2016 What an honor it was to experience the dynamics, spirituality, education and fellowship at the 43 rd Clergy Laity Conference in Nashville, representing the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of Memphis as a delegate. There was a vast amount of information presented, so it was impossible to attend all the topics being presented. On the 4 th of July we cruised the Cumberland River on the General Jackson steamship and watched the fireworks (the 3 rd largest display in the US) and got to socialize with old friends and made new friends. While there we saw Fathers Milton, Paul, Anthony, Jim, and of course our son, Father Dimitri. After the opening session on Monday morning, we were assigned to a session with Metropolitan Savas. When he asked about the drop in numbers in the Church and how to retain our children in the faith since so many of our children leave the faith, he pointed out that the parents need to lead by example. If they do not teach and pray at home and teach the importance of the Church in their lives, then the children will not value it either. Of course Sunday school attendance regularly to learn from trained teachers was important, but one of the best influences there was, was attending Church Camps to immerse the children in a fun environment where they can experience a spiritual relationship with Christ. On Tuesday we were given a presentation on the just completed Holy and Great Council held in Crete by Patriarchal representatives Metropolitan Damaskinos of Kydonias and Apokoronou and Metropolitan Ambrosios of Korea. Ten of the fourteen Autocephalous Churches were present, which was actually better than the 1 st Council of Nicea. No Council has had a greater representation of the Church or as global. Every Council in history was convened to address specific issues. Five topics were addressed in Crete: 1. Diaspora Mother Churches, Mission and the Future 2. Ecumenical Relations 3. Fasting 4. Marriage 5. Mission of the Church in the World

9 The results of all the discussions will be compiled, reviewed and decisions will be made later. On Wednesday I attended a presentation on the ongoing efforts of the International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC). The session focused exclusively on the Syrian/Iraqi crisis. Also present were Mark Brinkmoeller from the US State Dept. USAID and Joseph Livingston from Project CURE. Mr. Brinkmoeller gave an overview of the almost impossible complexities of the situation with the external influences of ISIS, Iran, and Russia. In addition to transporting humanitarian aid and food to areas under siege during ceasefires (IOCC is one of the few organizations allowed in.), are setting up schools in the refugee camps, because if the children drop out of school then most never go back and then we have another generation of uneducated people to be controlled by ISIS. During the Q & A a prominent New York priest stated that even though his parish hosted a Ramadan feast to foster relations with the Muslim community, his congregation has expressed deep feelings about letting into the US any more Syrian or Iraqi refugees for fear of terrorism. Although the aid goes to all displaced persons (nearly all to Muslims), one church in Florida raised over $35,000 for the Christians by selling pins which contain the sign of the Nazarene which ISIS forces Christians to display on their houses and businesses (which are in our bookstore). In the afternoon I attended a presentation by The Order of the St. Andrew describing many of the developments the Archons are helping the Patriarch to deal with. In the last 40 to 50 years the Turkish government has confiscated over 2/3 of the property owned by the Church, closed most of the churches and shut down the seminary of Halki. The buildings of the seminary are in much need of restoration and soon could reach the state of condemnation at which point the government would seize them. With the recent coup attempt by the more secular military the fundamentalist government may crack down even more and suppress Christians even further than the oppression already in existence. The discussion moved to education in the U.S. and the closing of Charter schools in the public school system and shutting down all Christian references but allowing all teaching about Islam. Throughout the U.S., barriers are thrown up in the way of Christian schools, while the government is openly aiding Muslim schools, which are bringing in teachers from Turkey and the Middle East who are teaching fundamentalist Sharia Law. On Thursday was the Plenary Meeting to receive the Reports of all the working committees of the Archdiocese. My general impression was that committees were all working very hard, but they could definitely use more staff who were more up-to-date on computer technology. Most of the comments from the priests who went to the microphone for questions were that teaching material was slow in coming and was not easily accessible to students and teachers. Thursday evening was the Grand Banquet, which was well enjoyed by all. The Patriarchal representatives presentations impressed upon us that Annunciation, Memphis, the Detroit Metropolis, and the Archdiocese of America are just a part of the fullness of the Orthodox Patriarchate. I highly encourage everyone who is able, to attend future Clergy-Laity Conferences. Respectfully submitted, Richard T. Tobias, DDS Delegate

Youth Ministries Sunday School The Sunday School Program is for children from Pre-K (age 4 by September 1) through 12 th grade. We meet every Sunday immediately following Holy Communion except during the Summer and certain Holidays. Sunday School is getting off to a "fantastic start." Thanks to all the teachers who have volunteered their time to teach lessons for our theme: "Road to Orthodoxy." On Sunday, August 21st, Father Simon blessed the teachers and students. Note from Father Simon: It is important that the children and their teachers receive Holy Communion first, so they may have as much time as possible to learn about our precious Faith. Parents, since we are now saying the Prayers Before Holy Communion together, please wait until these prayers have been completed before taking your children to the Narthex to line them up for Holy Communion. Once our youth have received, the ushers will dismiss the faithful row by row. Thank you for your assistance!

15 HOPE/JOY (Junior Orthodox Youth) There are no events scheduled for September. However, in October we will have the fall schedule of events and fun pictures to share from our Art event in August. Please check the calendar, the bulletin and the October Epistle for updates. GOYA (Greek Orthodox Youth of America) The GOYA Ministry at Annunciation is for youth in grades 6 through 12. We seek to provide programming for the entire group and to provide opportunities for our older youth to serve as role models for younger participants. But, owing to the developmental needs of different age groups in the Ministry, certain activities and meetings will be subdivided into middle school and high school groups. We meet the first and third Sundays of each month at noon in the GOYA Room. Please forward any comments, suggestions for activities, and preferred methods of communication (or to be removed from the GOYA mailing list) to Mitch Obradovic (mitch.obradovic@gmail.com). ATHENIAN DANCE TROUPE The Athenian Dance Troupe's mission is to provide dancers with artistic education and immersion in the rich tradition of Hellenic performing arts and dance. 16 Community Organizations NEW Annunciation Men s Group (Ahepa) for September Epistle The Ahepa met on June 25 th at the Picadilly in Germantown to discuss the future direction of the group. There were about 15 in attendance. It was decided, after much discussion, that the Ahepa would not disband but change itself into a men s group open to all men of Annunciation 18 or older. Any current member of Ahepa who wishes to continue to pay dues to Ahepa may do so. Any new member of the group that wishes to be a member of Ahepa is free to do so, but it is not mandatory to be part of the group. We plan to continue to sponsor events for the community such as the Softball game/community picnic, the Apokreas, Pancake breakfast for the feast of St. Nicholas, the Father s day brunch, and the annual scholarship. We are looking to add some community service outings and other activities. We hosted our first event on August 27 th with an outing to the Redbirds game. The community softball game and picnic will be on September the 18 th. Please dust off your gloves, lace up your cleats and join us for a friendly softball game and a delicious meal afterwards. Can t play anymore? Well we always need coaches for the bases. Can t coach? We need fans to cheer on the players. Please be looking for a schedule of events for our new group. We welcome you and encourage you to offer ideas for events and outings. Daughters of Penelope The Daughters of Penelope, was founded in 1929, in San Francisco, California. It was the realization of Alexandra Apostolides Sonenfeld s dream to create a women s organization comparable to her husband s membership in AHEPA. The AHEPA share our Mission Statement: To promote Hellenism, Education, Philanthropy, Civic Responsibility, and & Individual Excellence. Germantown International Festival - a wonderful success! Thanks so much to our beautiful Athenian Dancers: Mia Obradovic, Megan Wassef, Katherine Hoover and Sophia Douglas who performed several dances as they represented the Athenian Dance Troupe at the Germantown International Festival on Saturday, August 20 th. Numerous countries were represented from all over the world showing their pride of their Motherland and of course we were no different in showing how much we love our beloved Greece at the event! The Daughters of Penelope booth had our traveling suitcase filled with various Greek artifacts on display and sold Greek sweets. It was a wonderful day to share our heritage and culture with others. This annual event was well attended by hundreds of people (the most so far), so if you missed it this year, plan on attending next year! Please mark the date on your calendar Sunday, September 18 AHEPA/DOP Community Picnic. Please join us for this fun-filled event. A flyer with more information is attached. We will once again hold this at Houston High School, the baseball game starts at 4:00pm on the baseball field located in the rear of the school. The food will be provided by the Rendezvous, aka the Vergos. Hot dogs will be provided by AHEPA and Daughters the very refreshing watermelon. We are looking forward to our Sisterhood Tea on Saturday, September 24. Come and join us to learn more about the Daughters and the wonderful events we have ourselves and are asked to participate in to honor our Greek Culture. This is open to all the ladies of the Church who would like to learn more about the Daughters. There will also be the installation of the officers for the upcoming year.
