This week-readings Epistle 2Cor 9:6-11 Gospel Luke 5:1-11 (Julian calendar) 18th SUNDAY after Pentecost Tone 1 ========================================================================================= EPISTLE 2Cor 9:6-11 9:6 Remember this: he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly. He who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 9:7 Let each man give according as he has determined in his heart; not grudgingly, or under compulsion; for God loves a cheerful giver. 9:8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, that you, always having all sufficiency in everything, may abound to every good work. 9:9 As it is written, He has scattered abroad, he has given to the poor. His righteousness remains forever. * 9:10 Now may he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food, supply and multiply your seed for sowing, and increase the fruits of your righteousness; 9:11 you being enriched in everything to all liberality, which works through us thanksgiving to God. Gospel Luke 5:1-11 5:1 Now it happened, while the multitude pressed on him and heard the word of God, that he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret. 5:2 He saw two boats standing by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them, and were washing their nets. 5:3 He entered into one of the boats, which was Simon s, and asked him to put out a little from the land. He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat. 5:4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, Put out into the deep, and let down your nets for a catch. 5:5 Simon answered him, Master, we worked all night, and took nothing; but at your word I will let down the net. 5:6 When they had done this, they caught a great multitude of fish, and their net was breaking. 5:7 They beckoned to their partners in the other boat, that they should come and help them. They came, and filled both boats, so that they began to sink. 5:8 But Simon Peter, when he saw it, fell down at Jesus knees, saying, Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, Lord. 5:9 For he was amazed, and all who were with him, at the catch of fish which they had caught; 5:10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Jesus said to Simon, Don t be afraid. From now on you will be catching people. 5:11 When they had brought their boats to land, they left everything, and followed him. ================================================================================= REFLECTION OF THE WEEK The Mother of God When we try to discover who is Mary, the mother of Jesus, in Byzantine theology as with everything else, we look at the liturgical tradition. This reflects the teachings of the bible and the Fathers of the Church. Taking an active part in the liturgical life of the church is the perfect way to embrace theology and spirituality. Liturgy not only includes prayers, hymns, antiphons, and biblical readings of the Divine Liturgy and liturgies of all feast days of the year. This also includes iconography. Icons are never separated from liturgy.... Iconography avoids the question of what did Mary look like. That is why she usually looks, Greek, Ukrainian, Russian or whatever the nationality of the iconographer. Enculturation is fundamental in the Byzantine tradition. To avoid enculturation is being very non byzantine. (Refer to Ss Cyril and Methodius). Mary in the Byzantine icon always relates to her motherhood, hence the theological title Mother of God. She points to her Son showing the way in an icon called the Hodegetria, "she who shows the way". She embraces her Son, faces touching, motherly care touching Godly care in the icon called the Eleousa, "tenderness". ========================================================================================= If you want your sins to be "covered" by the Lord, do not display your virtues to others. For whatever we do with our virtues God will also do with our sins. St Mark the Ascetic Page 1

We are getting older and things are getting bad here. Gas prices are too high, there are no jobs, our food and heating costs are too high. I know some have taken you out of our schools, government and even Christmas, but Lord I'm asking you to come back and re-bless Australia We really need you! There are more of us who want you than those who don't! Thank You Lord, I Love you.. "Life without God is like an unsharpened pencil it has no point." Vichnaya Pamyat Eternal Memory The Magnificat And Mary said: My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord And my spirit exults in God my Saviour! Because he has looked upon his lowly handmaid. Yes, from this day forward all generations will call me blessed, for the Almighty has done great things for me. HOLY IS HIS Name! And His mercy reaches from age to age for those who fear him. He has shown the power of his arm, He has routed the proud of heart. He has pulled down princes from their thrones and exalted the lowly. The hungry he has filled with good things, the rich sent empty away. He has come to the help of Israel his servant, mindful of his mercy According to the promise he made to our ancestors To Abraham and to his descendants forever (Luke1: 46-55). Recently we have celebrated two feast days of the Mother of God: The Feast of Assumption and her Nativity. We do not know the exact day of Our Lady s birthday, but what is important is to celebrate her because she is the greatest woman that has ever lived. In our liturgical prayers we praise her with many magnificent poetic expressions, and sing many hymns in her honour. We love her and we rejoice in her. Mary is the greatest example of how to relate to God. She was pure and was able to comprehend the immensity of God. She knew that God wanted the best for her. She knew implicitly that God s will is life. When she was asked to be the mother of Jesus she understood that it was God s power acting in her. She was one with God. Let us in a quiet place and in the silence of our heart spend time with Mary and listen to what she wants to share with us. Let us reflect on the Magnificat, and allow Mary to teach us of God s goodness living in us. We can learn from her how to surrender to God in joy. And let us write our own Magnificat. 3 His Beatitude Patriarch Sviatoslav Visits the Khram To The Venerable Nun Martyrs Olympia and Laurentia On Sunday, September 23rd, under beautiful Saskatoon skies, His Beatitude Patriarch Sviatoslav honored the Ukrainian Sisters of St. Joseph with a visit to their Khram dedicated to the Venerable Nun Martyrs Olympia and Laurentia. After walking three times in procession around the Khram His Beatitude, together with their Excellencies Bryan Bayda, Eparch of Saskatoon; Michael Wiwchar, Bishop Emeritus of Saskatoon; and Stephan Meniok, Exarch of Donetsk-Kharkiv, Eastern Ukraine, as well as, several members of the Clergy and Sisters entered into it and celebrated a Moleben to the Nun Martyrs. During the service His Beatitude blessed the newly erected iconostas and icon to the 27 Martyrs on the inside of the Khram, as well as, the new entrance bell tower and multi-purpose building on its grounds. Inside the new building, which is being referred to as "The Ark", given its shape and the fact that it was successfully built during a record rainy season, His Beatitude also blessed a well which is central to it, as well as, the water flowing from it. Over 350 faithful participated in this historical event which marked the official completion of this multi-facility complex which includes a Monastery for the Sisters; a Khram to the Venerable Nun Martyrs Olympia and Laurentia in which their crucial elements and Our Lord and Saviour are ever present; a Trapezna building in which food is served and displays are held; the entrance archway which also serves as a bell tower; and, the new "Ark" which will house an Icon Corner and Martyrs Museum, the well/fountain, a coffee bar and meeting room, as well as, washroom facilities and a huge outdoor covered patio. Once all of these amenities are fully in place and functional the complex will be opened as a pilgrimage destination site. The Ukrainian Sisters of St. Joseph of Saskatoon sincerely thank His Beatitude for praying with them and blessing the new installations at the Khram complex; and, in the words of Venerable Olympia continue to give "Glory to God for Everything". Sisters of St. Joseph *****************************************************************************************************8 Minute Meditations extracts from AmericanCatholic.org Pleasing God Almighty, eternal, just and merciful God, grant us in our misery that we may do for your sake alone what we know you want us to do, and always want what pleases you; so that, cleansed and enlightened interiorly and fired with the ardor of the Holy Spirit, we may be able to follow in the footsteps of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and so make our way to you. The more I know myself to be loved by God, the more I open my heart with love to the world. from Wrapped Up True Discipleship Give me the grace, O Savior of the world, to bring your presence even to your enemies and to persist faithfully in witnessing to them even when I find it painful to do so. Let me be inspired by your martyrs who constantly call us back to you, our only hope and salvation. Fr. Benedict J. Groeschel, C.F.R. from Firmly On the Rock Page 3

4 You know you were born Ukrainian or have become Ukrainian by association when... Your knowledge of the Ukrainian language includes phrases such as: "Slava Isusu Christu", "Christos Razhdayetsya", "Christos Voskres", "Ya Ne Znayu", "Nu Yak Tom", "Dyakuyu", "Na Zdarovlya" and "Mnohaya Lita". Maybe even: "Nekhai Tebe Kachka Kopne" [May a duck kick you]. You call your grandma "babtsia" or "baba" and your grandpa dido. You know (or think you know) how to dance the hopak, kolomeyka and polka, but you only do it at Weddings or at a Malanka New Years dance after kicking back a few generous shots of vodka or cognac. When frustrated, you slap your forehead, shake your head, and say " To Ne Pravda" [It Can't be True] or "Ya Ne Viryu" [ I Can't Believe It]. It seems you're forever selling raffle tickets for some church fundraiser. You have at least one male relative named "Stefan," or "Vasyl" or "Bohdan", or "Taras" or "Roman" or "Vlodko." One of your aunts is named Hannia, Olya, Tekla, Lyuba, Nastia, Sofia, or Halya. Your parents have at least one crucifix or icon mounted on a wall in their house with pussy willows tucked behind it. You must visit "Bozhiy Hrib" [Jesus' Grave] in your parish church on Good Friday or Holy Saturday. You go to the church hall with you Easter basket to have your food blessed for the Sunday family Easter breakfast. You have become accustomed to eating red horseradish, with boiled eggs, kolbassa and ham. You have your new house blessed when you first move in at then yearly at Yordan [Epiphany/Jordan]. You get chills down your spine when you sing "Christos Voskres" [Christ is Risen] on Easter Sunday. Your family has a beautiful "Holy Supper" on Christmas Eve at which you share bread and honey, kiss everyone, sing "Boh Predvichni" [God Eternal] and have a meatless 12-course dinner including kutya. You always prefer rye bread to white. You know the words to "Mnohaya Lita" [God Grant You Many Years] and sing it at all birthday parties, weddings and celebrations. You tear up whenever you hear "Veechnaya Pomyat" sung at funerals. At least one of your friends doesn't know when to stop drinking. You have waited in line at a church to buy pyrohy, borshtch, paska or holubtsi. Words like kobassa, kapusta [cabbage], shkvarky [fried bacon bits] actually mean something to you. No celebration is complete without Ukrainian fresh baked pastries such as chrusty, pampushky and walnut tortes. You actually know who Saint Volodymyr the Great, Taras Shevchenko, & Volodymyr Palahniuk [Jack Palance] were and why they're important. You have at least one relative who sings really well (or thinks he or she sings well) and plays the piano, violin, guitar, sopilka or bandura. You often wear your embroidered Ukrainian blouse or shirt to special occasions. You have a niece or nephew who dances with a Ukrainian Folk group. Your idea of "healthy" is boiled pyrohy with butter and onions, holubtsi with tomato sauce, kobassa, pickles, and solonyna [fat back spread on rye bread]. You have a bar in your house - usually in the basement. Your family always has an excuse to hold a "hostyna" (party) when someone gets married or has a baby or graduates from kindergarten, high school or college. Your older relatives collect "prayer cards" from funerals. As a family, you often visit cemeteries to say a prayer for relatives, plant flowers and light votive candles. Zeleni Sviata People often have trouble pronouncing your last name. You dislike it very much when someone calls you Russian. When you visit, you never arrive empty-handed and when someone comes to your house you have enough food for the entire street.
