This week-readings Epistle Eph 2:4-10 Gospel Luke 8:26-39 (Julian calendar) 23rd SUNDAY after Pentecost Tone 6 Also First Confession and Solemn Communion for Daniel Podgorny ========================================================================================= EPISTLE Eph 2: But God, being rich in faithful love, through the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our sins, brought us to life with Christ-it is through grace that you have been saved- 6 and raised us up with him and gave us a place with him in heaven, in Christ Jesus. 7 This was to show for all ages to come, through his goodness towards us in Christ Jesus, how extraordinarily rich he is in grace. 8 Because it is by grace that you have been saved, through faith; not by anything of your own, but by a gift from God; 9 not by anything that you have done, so that nobody can claim the credit. 10 We are God's work of art, created in Christ Jesus for the good works which God has already designated to make up our way of life. Gospel Luke 8: They came to land in the territory of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. 27 He was stepping ashore when a man from the city who was possessed by devils came towards him; for a long time the man had been living with no clothes on, not in a house, but in the tombs. 28 Catching sight of Jesus he gave a shout, fell at his feet and cried out at the top of his voice, 'What do you want with me, Jesus, son of the Most High God? I implore you, do not torture me.' 29 For Jesus had been telling the unclean spirit to come out of the man. It had seized on him a great many times, and then they used to secure him with chains and fetters to restrain him, but he would always break the fastenings, and the devil would drive him out into the wilds. 30 Jesus asked him, 'What is your name?' He said, 'Legion'-because many devils had gone into him. 31 And these begged him not to order them to depart into the Abyss. 32 Now there was a large herd of pigs feeding there on the mountain, and the devils begged him to let them go into these. So he gave them leave. 33 The devils came out of the man and went into the pigs, and the herd charged down the cliff into the lake and was drowned. 34 When the swineherds saw what had happened they ran off and told their story in the city and in the country round about; 35 and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus they found the man from whom the devils had gone out sitting at the feet of Jesus, wearing clothes and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 36 Those who had witnessed it told them how the man who had been possessed came to be saved. 37 The entire population of the Gerasene territory was in great fear and asked Jesus to leave them. So he got into the boat and went back. 38 The man from whom the devils had gone out asked to be allowed to stay with him, but he sent him away saying, 39 'Go back home and report all that God has done for you.' So the man went off and proclaimed throughout the city all that Jesus had done for him =============================================================================== REFLECTION OF THE WEEK CHOTKY (PRAYER ROPE) Because we live in the western world, many of us have heard and know about the ROSARY, but what are CHOTKY is less known. As the western rite Christians have the ROSARY upon which they pray to Our Lady- Hail Mary, so the Eastern Christians Greek/ Eastern Catholic and Orthodox have CHOTKY - komboskini in Greek, the prayer rope upon which they pray the Jesus Prayer or otherwise known as the prayer of the heart. CHOTKY are composed of 33, 50, 100 or more knots. Often, ten knots are separated by beads. The thirty three knots symbolise the 33 years of Jesus life on earth. The prayer which is recited the most on the chotky: Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner is the Gospel prayer of the publican taken from Jesus parable of the Pharisee and the Publican, Lk.18,9-14 and from the parable of the blind beggar Bartolomeus, who began to see after he cried to Christ and begged Jesus to have mercy on him. Mk.10, Mt. 20, Lk. 18, Prayer on the CHOTKY is a part of our personal relationship with God, because by it we better approach our Creator. Page 1

2 When is it possible and necessary to pray on the CHOTKY? The prayer can be recited whenever and wherever. In the morning, during the day or in the evening. When we are in our car, when we go for a walk, when we are working or merely standing in a queue. Volodomyr Monomach taught his children to pray on CHOTKY while riding on horseback. St. Paul in his first letter to the Thessalonians says: Pray without ceasing (1 Thess. 5,17) and the prayer on the CHOTKY is therefore the best method to pray without ceasing. Our task is to approach God as close as it is possible. St. Isaac of Syria says that it is not possible to approach God without such unceasing prayer, so the chotky not only tell us how much we have prayed, but they, according to the words of the Fathers of the Church, have the following meaning: the physical presence of the CHOTKY in our fingers help us to concentrate when disturbed by various evil thoughts and allow us to return to full prayer quickly. Every touch of our fingers on the knot or cross reminds us that we are protected by the prayer that we are reciting. CHOTKY are worn encircling the wrist to remind us that everything we do we should offer up to God. ================================================================================ Last Sat, Perth Parish Council had a fundraiser of Varenyky and cabbage rolls (Holubtsi and we asked helpers to come make the varenyky as we had about 1,000 varenyky on order to do. Many hands make light work. Many thanks to all who came to help, namely : Mrs M Stasiw, Mrs Pat Karpewycz, Mrs Justina Dmytruk, Mrs Sophie Mortlock (who came all the way from Mandurah to help) Mrs Maria Hamiwka, Mrs Judy Sluchniak, Mrs Nadia Furdas, Mrs Janenne Marunczyn, Mrs Irene Dumitro, Mrs Anna Hruzewych, Miss Dorica Konderewicz, Miss Lynette Paraszczyn, Mrs Suzanna Prushynsky, Mr Harry Slocum, Mrs Nadia Mandyczewsky and son Roman, Mrs Eva Gorter, Mrs Ludmilla Zemunovic, and Mrs Luba Valega. What a tremendous effort everyone varenyky were made, and 200 holubtsi made by the Konderewicz family. A great fundraiser towards paying off the lift which has been installed at the stairs going up to the hall. Mrs Dmytruk and her daughter Pat were the first to use it and then Mrs M Stasiw had a go with Fr Kalinecki. Page 2

CYM members held flags during the Panahyda (Memorial service) ===================================================================== This Tuesday 13th Nov, Sr. Marijka Konderewicz SSMI, will be quest speaker at our Spiritual Gathering at 1pm at Sister s residence, 16 Ferguson St, Maylands. Sister Marijka will give some highlights of the Visit of His Beatitude Sviatislav in Canada and Vision 20/20. Please come. 4 This year the Holodomor Panahyda will be at the Ukrainian Catholic Church November 25, 2012, 20 Ferguson St, Maylands After the Liturgies at both Ukrainian Churches, everyone is invited to attend a Panahyda (Memorial service) in the Ukrainian Catholic Church Following the Panahyda there will be light refreshments and courtesy of Dr Lesa Melnyczuk a showing of the film "Holodomor Ukraine's Genocide" a film by Bobby Leigh. The film is excellent and very well subtitled (it is easy to follow both in English & Ukrainian). The film is very current being released in March The film was 5 years in the making, it is well researched, very well documented and very compelling. There will also be a short talk by Dr Lesa Melnyczuk. Ukraine remembers the World acknowledges! Mykola Mowczan President UAWA Perth ================================================================================= MEDIA RELEASE Ukrainian World Congress Nov 1, 2012 REMEMBERING THE VICTIMS OF THE HOLODOMOR The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) calls upon the international community to commemorate the 79th anniversary of the Holodomor on November 24, 2012, and duly pay respect to the innocent victims of this genocide of the Ukrainian people. Despite efforts by the totalitarian Soviet regime to spread disinformation and destroy the painful personal memories, today, the truth about the Holodomor has become ingrained in the global reality. Undisputable facts founded in archival documents and academic research, and in eyewitness testimonies formed the basis for recognition of the Holodomor as an act of genocide against the Ukrainian people by 16 countries and remembrance of the Holodomor s victims by high-level international agencies, including the Organization of United Nations, the European Parliament, UNESCO and OSCE. Continuing its long-standing efforts dedicated to sharing the truth of the Holodomor with the world, the UWC calls upon all Ukrainians to, once again, reflect upon these horrific pages of our history and to continue awareness campaigns, while working persistently toward the recognition of the Holodomor as a genocide of the Ukrainian people by as many countries as possible and ensuring inclusion of this topic in school curricula. On Saturday, November 24, 2012 International Holodomor Memorial Day, UWC calls upon: all Ukrainian churches and community organizations to organize requiems, gatherings and other initiatives with the goal of engaging the broader Ukrainian community, as well as representatives of government, nongovernmental organizations and local residents; the international community to: Remember the victims by pausing for a moment of silence at 19:32 local time, light candles of remembrance in homes; and participate in local commemorations and memorial services. (In Perth Sun 25th Nov) May our memory of the victims of the Holodomor, Ukrainian famine-genocide be eternal. Ukraine remembers the World acknowledges! Bring along some tools, for pruning, weeding. Cleaning of the Church Cleaning the Hall and Kitchen area Weeding around the Church premises Fixing and checking all Reticulation Trimming the lemon tree and cleaning up that garden area Adding some manure to the tree and in Father's garden area Weeding around the monument area General sweeping and cleaning Throwing out rubbish from the library areas? A RESTORATION (Maintenance) fund has being organised for our Church renovations. This is separate to the yearly upkeep (podatok) fund. If you wish to donate, please see Luba Valega. The Church building is in need of repairs and so the Parish Council is asking for your support. Total now $ The Parish Council has installed a lift going up to the hall via the stairs outside to help people to be able to get to the hall much easier. We are looking for donations to help cover costs of installing the lift.
