Through him we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in our hope of sharing the glory of God. More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us. While we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Why, one will hardly die for a righteous man -- though perhaps for a good man one will dare even to die. But God shows his love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we are now justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. Math 6: The eye is the lamp of the body. So if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light; 23 but if your eye is unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness. 24. No one can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth. 25. Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat and what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26. Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27. And can any of you by worrying add a single hour t6o your span of life? 28. And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies if the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, 29. yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not worry, saying, What will we eat? or What will we drink? or What will we wear? 32. For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things; and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.33. But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. ================================================================================== Words of Wisdom There is comfort in knowing and peace in believing that heartfelt prayers surround you every day. The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of God stands forever. Each life is indeed a gift no matter how short, no matter how fragile...each life is indeed a gift to be held in our hearts forever. May God s angels go before you, walk beside you, stand behind you. The sorrows of this world can never take away what love has already given us. 2 Last week the Ukrainian Catholic of St Andrew s in Lidcombe NSW was desecrated with painted graffiti on the outside walls. AFUO WELCOMES RUSSIAN AUSTRALIAN COMMUNITY S SUPPORT The Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO) welcomes the Russian Australian community s condemnation of the recent hate crime at St Andrew s Ukrainian Catholic Church in western Sydney. AFUO President Stefan Romaniw OAM (who is also former Chair of the Victorian Multicultural Commission; Executive Director of Community Languages Australia, and: an Australia Day Ambassador) said: We thank the Russian Australian community for its support in the face of this abhorrent and unaustralian act. Both our communities have made strong positive contributions to Australia, even as ANZACs, and know that what is most important is our democratic and multicultural fabric here in Australia and always working to uphold it. Based on at least 65 years of peaceful relations as neighbours, schoolmates, workmates and friends, I am confident that both our communities will never allow some unknown person or persons, currently being investigated by the NSW Police for a hate crime against Ukrainian Australians, sway us from the course of community harmony in Australia. Russian Australians and Ukrainian Australians will not be provoked into a false conflict because we know that what s most important is that we are all Australians first and foremost. The Ukrainian Australian community also strongly thanks our elected representatives, other ethnic community leaders and members of the general public who have greatly comforted us with their solidarity in this stressful time. We are very grateful to have your friendship and support, Mr. Romaniw said. The following is a translation from the recent issue of Sydney-based Russian language newspaper Unification : The Russian community condemns the provocative act contrary to the policy of multicultural Australia. The authors graffiti was clearly trying to bring about tension and incite enmity between friendly communities. At a meeting of Ukrainian and Russian communities in March with the CRC (Community Relations Commission for a multicultural NSW), agreement was reached not to transfer the conflict that happens in Ukraine to Australia. The Russian community supports peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine, taking into account the interests of all ethnic groups living in the country. 3 UGCC bishops urge the faithful to continue fasting and to continually pray for peace in Ukraine Sunday, 22 June 2014 Our Christian conscience tells us that we do not have the right to let our hands down. We should continue in praying and fasting. In this complicated time for our country, we beseech the Almighty for victory over the machinations of an outside aggressor and for peace on our land, write the members of the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC Kyiv-Halych Major Archbishopric in their Appeal to the faithful and all people of goodwill to continue on-going praying and fasting for peace in Ukraine. The Greek-Catholic bishops are appealing to UGCC faithful and generally to all Christians and people of goodwill, to continue an uninterrupted fast and prayers for peace and a better future for Ukraine. In the Appeal the Most Reverend Bishops provide clear practical directives regarding the continuation of this spiritual deed. The hierarchs commission parishes, monasteries, and seminaries to hold continuous round-the-clock prayers. The bishops ask all faithful and people of goodwill everyday at 9 pm to participate in the joint prayer for Ukraine (on Monday: for the successful service of the President, the government, and Parliament; on Tuesday: for the enemy; for the conversion of those who persecute and attack us; on Wednesday: for the Ukrainian Army; on Thursday: for law protecting organs and the police; on Friday: for those wounded, in captivity, the refugees and their families; on Saturday: for the dead, especially the perished soldiers and all innocently killed; on Sunday: for unity and independence of Ukraine). Also UGCC has announced an uninterrupted strict fast scheduled as follows: on Monday: Kyiv Archeparchy, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Odesa, and Crimea Exarchates; on Tuesday: Lviv Archeparchy, Stryi Eparchy; on Wednesday: Ivano-Frankivsk Archeparchy, Kolomyia-Chernivtsi Eparchies; on Thursday: Ternopil Archeparchy, Buchach Eparchy, Sambir-Drohobych Eparchy; on Friday: Sokal-Zhovkva Eparchy; Lutsk Exarchate. At the end of every Liturgy, the bishops direct to sing the prayer: Oh, God, Great and Only As it is written in the Appeal of UGCC bishops, in facing the new dangers, the Ukrainian people should unite in their readiness to safeguard the Motherland, to defend its independence and the right of every citizen to live in a free, democratic, and European nation. The beginning of the renewal of government in our nation, the Presidential Elections which manifested a consolidation of Ukrainian society and the ability of the people to take on the responsibility for their future, the preservation of an inter-religious and international peace in the country all this is the harvest of prayers heard by God, an expression of the strength of the Intercession of the Most Holy Mother of God over us, which we renewed on April 6th this year, urge the bishops the faithful. We remind all, that somewhat earlier, during the last session of the Synod of Bishops of the Kyiv-Halych Major Archbishopric of UGCC, which took place in Lviv on January 31st and February 1, 2014, the bishops published an Appeal regarding the situation in Ukraine". In this appeal there was announced a period of fasting in all hierarchies with a request to pray for peace. Given the fact that the situation in Ukraine has escalated and remains unregulated, UGCC hierarchs in the next session of the Synod, decided to continue fasting and praying for this intention. UGCC Department of Information ============================================================================== SAINTS Saint Matthew, the first-century tax collector turned apostle who chronicled the life and ministry of Christ in his Gospel, is celebrated by the Church today, September 21. Although relatively little is known about the life of St. Matthew, the account he wrote of Christ's ministry traditionally considered to be the first of the four Gospels - is of inestimable value to the Church, particularly in its verification of Jesus as the Messiah. Eastern Catholics and the Orthodox churches celebrate St. Matthew on November 16, along with St. Fulvianus, a prince who is recorded in some traditions as converting from paganism after Matthew's martyrdom. The Gospel accounts of Mark and Luke, like Matthew's own, describe the encounter between Jesus and Matthew under the surprising circumstances of Matthew's tax-collecting duties. Jewish publicans, who collected taxes on behalf of the Roman rulers of first-century Judea, were objects of scorn and even hatred among their own communities, since they worked on behalf of the occupying power and often earned their living by collecting more than the state's due. Jesus most likely first encountered Matthew near the house of Peter, in Capernaum near the Sea of Galilee. The meeting of the two was dramatic, as Matthew's third-person account in his Gospel captured: As Jesus passed on, the ninth chapter recounts, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post. He said to him, 'Follow me'. And he got up and followed him. Matthew's calling into Jesus' inner circle was a dramatic gesture of the Messiah's universal message and mission, Page 2

4 causing some religious authorities of the Jewish community to wonder: Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners? Jesus' significant response indicated a central purpose of his ministry: I did not come to call the righteous but sinners." A witness to Christ's resurrection after death, as well as his ascension into heaven and the events of Pentecost, Matthew also recorded Jesus' instruction for the apostles to go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. Like 11 of the 12 apostles, St. Matthew is traditionally thought to have died as a martyr while preaching the Gospel. The Roman Martyrology describes his death as occurring in a territory near present-day Egypt. Both the saint himself, and his Gospel narrative, have inspired important works of religious art, ranging from the ornate illuminated pages of the Book of Kells in the ninth century, to the Saint Matthew Passion of J.S. Bach. Three famous paintings of Caravaggio, depicting St. Matthew's calling, inspiration and martyrdom, hang within the Contarelli Chapel in Rome's Church of St. Louis of the French. Reflecting on St. Matthew's calling, from the pursuit of dishonest financial gain to the heights of holiness and divine inspiration, Pope Benedict said in 2006 that in the figure of Matthew, the Gospels present to us a true and proper paradox: those who seem to be the farthest from holiness can even become a model of the acceptance of God's mercy and offer a glimpse of its marvelous effects in their own lives. ================================================================================ Trying to pray and it just is not working? try the akafist.
