2 Beloved in the Lord, Christos Aneste! When our Lord Jesus nudges, one must listen! With the blessing of Metropolitan Nicholas of Detroit and Bishop Demetrios of Chicago, I have been assigned to the Saint George Greek Orthodox Church in DeKalb, Illinois, by August first this summer. The main reason for accepting this transfer is for us to be near family in the Chicago area. It is bitter-sweet to leave a parish that has supported us and shown us so much love. It has become our favorite parish in our nearly 50 years of service. You have our love in return. We plan to visit with you in the near future and extend an invitation to all of you to visit us any time. You would be most welcome. I know that you will offer your full support to the next Priest in every way, just as you did myself, Presvytera, and Sofia. In His Name, Father George, Proistamenos 50 years ago I was ordained on St. Elias Names Day. Hence a deep kinship with the church and all her members. It has been a pleasure and honor to participate in many of your liturgies and events. 12 years ago I was assigned to my beloved Saint Nicholas Parish one month after our grandson, Nicholas was born. Now, I leave you to serve another parish near my family in Chicago: St. George. Does not the Lord work in Mysterious ways? Father George, Proistamenos

6 THANK YOUS: This is tough because it is so easy to overlook someone accidentally, but here goes: It has been a joy to work with President Athena Constantine and the Erene Society these past almost twelve years. She and the Society were honored recently with a Plaque. I have had 3 great Council Presidents John Silo, James Cheronis and now Timothy Anderson. All the members of the Council present and past have co-operated in trying to do the best for our Church and Community. My Altar Boys have been indespensable. Nick Verleni has been my right hand present at almost every Divine Liturgy, Sundays and weekdays all these years. Thanks also to Elias Tsitso, Chris Christodoulou, Jimmy Christ and Christian Duro. Other wonderful Altar boys grew up in the Altar and then went on to College. Bless them all. The Choir under Presvytera Anne s leadership has been an inspiration to all, not just here in our Church, but representing our faith at all the Ecumenical concerts. Throughout the years, beginning with Athena Dimitri and Liz Frederick and Christine Cheronis our Sunday School has been developing. Now under the expertise of educator Sabrina Piaschyk, with co-teachers, Chris Cheronis, Kathleen Morrison, and Christine Tsitso the precious children have learned so much and are con tinually being educated in the Faith. Those who took care of the Sunday Bulletin, all did a fine job: Stephanie Lampropolos, Teresa Duro and now Angie Turner. Bible Readings and Epistle readings, order of Hymns and then the news of the week have been a great source of information. Readers during Lent and Holy week are to be commended: JoAnne Christ, James Cheronis, Teresa Duro, Kathleen Morrison, Kathy Kieva, Presvytera Anne, Helen Voulgaris, and Dr. Mary Ann Spanos and Dora Turner. Also, thanks to Nicholas Manno and Thomas Getska of St.Elias Albanian Church for doing many readings for us over the years and joining our Choir whenever possible. George Spanos saw to repairs throughout the years and George Theofilactides, in addition to creating out Memorial Table and other necessary artifacts for the Altar and Iconostas, repaired broken pews and the organ leg. Thank you both! John Silo has run successful Yassou Festivals with EVERYONE S help these past years. Finally, I thank all of you who have taken care of Sofia during Liturgies, walked her, pushed her in her stroller, brought her up for Holy Communion so that Presvytera could direct the Choir: Stephanie Lampropolos, Helen Voulgaris, Julianne Dimitri, Basil Gedz, Panteli Pantelis and George Spanos. God bless. Prosforon Makers: Chairperson, Joanne Christ with Christine Cheronis, Angie Turner, Maria Stanton, Louise Hill, Kathleen Morrison and Madison Christ. Koliva Makers: Christine Cheronis and Stephanie Lampropoulos Cook Books: Elizabeth Frederick Last but not least, I thank Betty Pappas of Olean, who for all these years co-ordinated our Liturgies in Olean or other communities. God grant you ALL health and happiness. Father George

20 FAITH TEACHINGS Regarding Suicides and Cremation By Metropolitan Isaiah of Denver Over the past several years it appears that a number of persons who have been recognized as Orthodox Christians have taken their lives as well as some who leave in their wills that they wish to be cremated. On the basis of these two realities, it is obvious that many of our people have no understanding of the sanctity of the human body and have not been educated on the seriousness of these matters relative to the fact that they consider themselves members of the Church. In the matter of suicides, if a person is considered in his or her right mind and commits suicide, the only interpretation that the Church can give is that such a person rejects the life given to them by the Holy Spirit. The result is that the Church does not offer a funeral service to that person. The reason for this is that the funeral service is reserved only for those who believe in the resurrection of the dead and eternal life after the resurrection. Therefore, the only time a funeral is conducted for a suicide is on the basis of a doctor s reputable statement that the person committing suicide was not in his or her right mind. In the matter of cremations, the inference is that there is no resurrection of the body, contrary to what we read in the New Testament, and thus the cremation returns the body to its basic elements. It is also important to note that the Orthodox Christian funeral service is written on the premise that a body is present. Consequently, whether a body is cremated, lost at sea, or otherwise absent, the funeral service cannot be conducted. The reason for this is that the funeral service is deliberately written in such a way as if the deceased were singing the dramatic hymns. Specific verses are taken from the Book of Psalms (118) which are in the first person, using the pronoun I. Aside from this fact, cremation goes contrary to Holy Scripture. One good example is found in St. Paul s First Letter to the Corinthians where we read,...glorify God in your body and in your spirit which are God s (6:20). In other words, our bodies and souls belong to God, and not to us. Therefore, we have no right to do with our bodies what we please. In addition to all of this, there is even a greater reason why cremation is contrary to our Christian faith. Simply put, it desecrates the body. Moreover, the so-called ashes from a cremation are not ashes. They are the crushed and pulverized skull and bones of the body, the arms and legs. They are put through a grinding machine which actually turns the bones into dust. Finally, for an Orthodox Christian to fulfill the wishes of a member of the family who wishes to be cremated after death actually defiles the sacraments of Baptism, Chrismation, Confession, Holy Unction, Holy Matrimony, and the Holy Eucharist by considering the wishes of the deceased more important than the divine blessing of the Holy Spirit upon the deceased body throughout the years that the body was the recipient of those holy blessings. On the basis of these realities, it is the responsibility of not only the clergy, but of all our faithful Greek Orthodox Christians to do whatever they can do, in a positive way, to impress upon those who accept this pagan practice that it is wrong. The fact that the deceased body of an Orthodox Christian receives multiple blessings from the Lord in preparation of the eternal Kingdom any violence upon a dead body is the desecration of God s temple.

23 Choir Corner My dear Choir Members, I will never forget our nearly twelve years together, singing praises to the Lord during the Divine Liturgies. We came a long way, BABY! We could have performed complicated, beautiful renditions of the Liturgy, but our purpose was to include the Congregation in the singing. And we succeeded beautifully. With the simple green liturgy books, most everyone could follow along. As the years went by we got better and better. We included some more difficult hymns and sang them well. We even performed at several Ecumenical Choir Concerts, being told every time, that our Hymns were enjoyed the most. I feel that our last concert was the best, singing the newly arranged Herouvikon or Cherubim Hymn, which we have incorporated into our Sunday Divine Liturgies. This past Holy Week we sang, for the first time, The Troparion Kassianis. It was wonderful. And our Great Friday and Easter Services went very well, with everyone participating just as we wanted. We have purchased new music throughout the years, new Choir robes; we have honored past and present choir members, going back to the first choirs here, we have received choir pins, certificates and icons, we have held annual Choir luncheons to support our MEFGOX and Music Forum obligations: we have performed here in our Fellowship Hall several concerts and programs. It s been great. Thank you one and all for your dedication and your lovely voices: James Cheronis, Basil Gedz, Dean Stanton, Jerry Newburg, Christo Christodoulou, Joanne Christ, Madison Christ, Angie Turner, Dora Turner, Ashley Stanton, Elizabeth Newburg, Kathy Theofilactidis, Kathleen Morrison, Kathy Kieva, and Helen Verleni. Thanks also to Nicholas Manno and Thomas Getska of Saint Elias Albanian Church for joining us at all of the Ecumenical Concerts as well as many of our Divine Liturgies here. I will never forget you. I will always marvel at how wonderful we have sounded most of the time with the organ and without the organ A Capella> You are all trained now. You can do fine on your own... With sad and happy emotions at our leaving you ( you know what I mean), your Presvytera Anastasia

25 MIROFORES GIRLS How precious it was to see our adorable Mirofores girls standing by Jesus s flowered tomb on Great and Holy Friday, this past Holy Week. We thank Madison Christ for directing them this year. She did a great job. The girls were: Chryssie Rose Panteli, Sara Tsitso, Kylie Irene Kress, Melina Singleton, Ellie Sophia Theofilactidis, Aubrie Newburg, and Tatiana Irene Piaschyk. The girls were troupers, standing a long time and then throwing their rose petals upon Jesus s tomb when Father George instructed them to. Then, they processed, in their beautiful white dresses around the whole Church, with the whole congregation holding lit candles and chanting Ayios O Theos, as they followed the Tomb of Christ, the Altar Boys, Father George and the Choir. God bless each one of them and may they hold this special memory in their hearts for years to come. Thank you, Mirofora Girls. Love, Presvytera Anne Repasts On Palm Sunday a wonderful luncheon was prepared by our own resident chef Todd Singleton. A fullhouse enjoyed the traditional fish, potatoes, salads and fruit. Thanks to Todd for all his hard work and preparations. On Holy Friday evening, after the service, everyone went into the Fellowship Hall for a light supper prepared by Presvytera Anne and Father George. Thanks to Stephanie Lampropolos and to all those who helped out. Also many thanks to all who brought dishes to pass during our Wednesday night Lenten dinners. On Easter Sunday, after the midnight Resurrection Service, all wnet into the Hall for a wonderful repast which was prepared by the Kathleen Morrison and the Cheronis and Turner Families. Thank you to all those who attended, ate, and cleaned up!
