1 THE WONDERWORKER May / June 2017 Fr. Jarrod s Message Beloved Parishioners, Christ is Risen! Christos Anesti! Krishti u ngjall! Christos Voskrese! In every language, the message is the same: Christ is risen from the dead, by death trampling down upon death, and to those in the tombs He has granted life! This message contains our hope, our joy, and our ultimate meaning as Orthodox Christians. This message inspires us to grow closer to our Risen Lord and Savior. This message unites all Orthodox Christians throughout the world as the Body of Christ. Truly, the Lord is risen! I hope and pray that each and every member of our St. Nicholas Church experienced a very blessed Holy Week and Pascha. As you will see in this issue of The Wonderworker, Holy Week and Pascha at St. Nicholas was a beautiful and spiritually edifying experience. The faithful members of our church community worked together in every aspect to support and celebrate these services. It was truly a Great and Holy Week! We now look forward to the Feast of the Ascension where we enter into the mystery of Jesus Christ returning to Heaven forty days after His Resurrection. This year, we will celebrate the Vesperal Divine Liturgy for this Feast on Wednesday, May 24 at 5:30 pm at St. Stephen Episcopal Church in Olean, New York. This is the first time that we will celebrate a major Feast of the Church at a time and place that allows our Beloved Parishioners who live in and around the Olean area to attend without a lengthy journey. We encourage all of our parishioners, regardless of where they live, to join us in Olean for this service, which will be our sole parish celebration of the Feast of the Ascension. On Sunday, June 4, we will celebrate the Feast of Pentecost, which is the commemoration of the descent of the Holy Spirit fifty days after the Resurrection of the Lord. ST. 4 UPSTATE NEW YORK GOYA LENTEN RETREAT On Saturday March 18, 2017, several Saint Nicholas parishioners attended the Upstate NY GOYA Lenten Retreat at the Holy Spirit in Rochester, NY. The retreat included morning Orthros and evening Vespers, fun activities and ice breakers for the youth, and also learning sessions for children and adults alike. We were blessed to have His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas leading the retreat assisted by Dcn. Alex Radulescu. Parish priests in attendance and participating were Fr. Jarrod Russell from St. Nicholas Jamestown, Fr. Michael Marcantoni from Holy Spirit Rochester, Fr. David Smith from Saint Sophia Syracuse, and Fr. Chris Christakis from Annunciation Buffalo. The children participated in a Service Project, which involved preparing sandwiches, assembling health & beauty care items and writing inspirational messages to be placed in each packet for people in need. Overall it was a wonderful day of faith and fellowship, and we encourage all to attend any such future events. During dinner, the children were blessed with a special interaction with Metropolitan Nicholas, wherein he engaged very closely with them and answered questions posed by the children for him on recipe cards earlier that day. Questions such as, What kind of music do you listen to?, Where did you get your staff?, Do you carry it with you everywhere you go?, Why do you dress like that?, and Did you always know you would be a priest? His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas was very entertained by these questions and he was happy to answer each and every one of them. (Answers: The Phantom of the Opera was the last song played on his ipod, he got the staff in Greece, he only carries it with him when traveling throughout his Diocese, he dresses in the style of robes as he was directed by his Spiritual Father at the time he was ordained a priest, and he has known since the age of 4 that he would be a priest because God inspired him then while he served as an acolyte). The next Metropolis GOYA event is Summer Camp at Saint Timothy s Camp in Croghan NY. Camp Dates for 2017 are August Registration forms will be online soon at

15 St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Ladies Erene Society Submitted by: Christine Cheronis, President Christ is risen! Truly, He is risen! Our Ladies Erene Society was very busy during the Lenten season and throughout Holy Week leading up to Pascha. In addition to our regular monthly meetings, we hosted the annual work bee that is held prior to Pascha to clean the Holy items Father Jarrod uses during Liturgy. A lot of elbow grease was needed to remove all the wax from the carpets from the previous year s Holy Saturday night service as well as hours of polishing to make everything shine again. Thanks to all the ladies (and men!) who spent their Saturday afternoon scrubbing and polishing to make our Church shine for Pascha. The ladies held meetings in March and April to discuss several new projects. St. Erene s Kitchen Committee is currently working with Father Jarrod and the Office for the Aging to bring nutritious meals to our parishioners who have had difficulty getting out during the harsh winter months. Meals will be prepared and delivered along with some other Greek goodies and personal items in each basket as Father visits our Church members. If you have a loved one from our Church that you would like to add to Father s visitation list and could benefit from a Love Basket from the Ladies Erene Society, please contact Father Jarrod or Christine Cheronis. May is Philoptochos Membership month for all the Parishes within the Metropolis of Detroit and the National Philoptochos Society.
