1 THE WONDERWORKER MARCH / APRIL 2017 Fr. Jarrod s Lenten Message We are entering Great Lent, and the Church calls us to increase our fasting, prayer, and almsgiving for the next forty days in preparation for the celebration of our Lord s Passion and Resurrection. Why forty days? As Saint Augustine explains, for forty days Moses, the guardian of the Law, fasted; for forty days Elias, the most excellent of the Prophets, fasted; for forty days the Lord Himself, to whom both the Law and the Prophets gave testimony, fasted. We follow these holy examples, especially of our Lord Jesus Christ, and engage in increased spiritual labors for the forty days of Great Lent. In order for us to grow spiritually during the next forty days, we must increase our liturgical prayer through the additional services offered only during Great Lent and Holy Week. This should include the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts celebrated during the first five Wednesday evenings of Great Lent and on Holy Wednesday Morning during Holy Week. This ancient service is only offered during this time of spiritual preparation and is a wonderful opportunity for Orthodox Christians to hear readings from the Old Testament, to chant Lenten hymns, and to receive the Holy Eucharist on weekdays during Great Lent. During the first five Wednesday evenings of Great Lent, the Liturgy of Presanctified Gifts will be celebrated at 6:30 pm, which will make the service accessible to those who work or attend school during the day or live a long distance from the Church. As we begin this Lenten journey, we should also call to mind the Prayer of Saint Ephraim that is recited during the weekday services of Great Lent and by the faithful throughout the fast: O Lord and Master of my life, give me not a spirit of sloth, vain curiosity, lust for power, and idle talk. But give to me Thy servant a spirit of soberness, humility, patience, and love. O Lord and King, grant me to see my own faults and not to condemn my brother; for blessed art Thou to the ages of ages. Amen. In Christ, Have a blessed Lent! Rev. Fr. Jarrod Russell ST. NICHOLAS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH 15 FRANCIS ST. PO BOX 264 JAMESTOWN, NY (716) FAX: (716) JAMESTOWN.ORG PARISH PRIEST Rev. Fr. MAY THEIR MEMORIES BE ETERNAL A NOTE FROM THE CHOIR By Jim Cheronis, Choir Coordinator The St. Nicholas Choir held their first practice on Thursday, February 9, Choir Director Jim Cheronis issued the newly completed Divine Liturgy Hymnals in 4 part harmony. The choir practiced responses to the petitions according to the sheet music, and everyone was amazed with how beautiful the combined voices sounded. The goal is to learn to sing the Divine Liturgy using the sheet music, and that will take some time. Practices will generally be held every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month at the St. Nicholas Church from 6:30 pm. - 7:30 p.m. The Choir Director is also willing to work with individuals or groups outside of regular practice times. We welcome anyone who is interested to join the growing St. Nicholas Choir! Upcoming practice dates are 2/23, 3/09 and 3/23.

5 The Tradition of the Vasilopita January 8, 2017 The tradition of baking and cutting a special "pita" each year is observed in honor of our holy father Basil the Great, Archbishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia - hence its name "Vasilopita" meaning "St. Basil's Bread." For centuries, parents, grandparents and godparents have related the following to Orthodox children about St. Basil and the Vasilopeta. One year, during a time of terrible famine, the emperor levied a sinfully excessive tax upon the people of Caesarea. The tax was such a heavy burden upon the already impoverished people that to avoid debtors' prison each family had to relinquish its few remaining coins and pieces of jewelry, including precious family heirlooms. Learning of this injustice upon his flock, St. Basil the Great, the Archbishop of Caesarea, took up his bishop's staff and the book of the holy Gospels and came to his people's defense by fearlessly calling the emperor to repentance. By God's grace, the emperor did repent! He canceled the tax and instructed his tax collectors to turn over to St. Basil all of the chests containing the coins and jewelry which had been paid as taxes by the people of Caesarea. But now St. Basil was faced with the daunting and impossible task of returning these thousands of coins and pieces of jewelry to their rightful owners. After praying for a long time before the icons of our Master Christ and His All-Holy Mother, St. Basil had all the treasures baked into one huge pita. He then called all the townspeople to prayer at the cathedral, and, after the Divine Liturgy, he blessed and cut the pita, giving a piece to each person. Miraculously, each owner received in his piece of Vasilopita his own valuables. They all joyfully returned home, giving thanks to God who had delivered them from abject poverty and to their good and holy bishop St. Basil the Great! In remembrance of that miracle wrought by God as a result of St. Basil's love and defense of his people, Orthodox Christians have observed the tradition of the Vasilopita each year on January 1st - the date on which St. Basil reposed in the Lord in the year 379. Many thanks to Jerry Newburg whose first attempt at making Saint Nicholas Parish's traditional Vasilopita was a great success! Congratulations to Helen Voulgaris who was the lucky recipient of the coin - many blessings to Helen and her family in 2017 and always!

7 Yassou Dancers Update Submitted by: Dora Turner Date: Feb 17, 2017 Everyone loves to watch the Saint Nicholas Yassou Dancers perform at our annual Yassou Festival. The Dancers proudly demonstrate the Greek heritage and culture, and work very hard to represent the church with this enjoyable entertainment. Since attending the Syracuse Dance Festival a few months ago, we learned a lot about how other churches work all year to practice and strive to provide authenticity both in their appearance and their techniques. Father Jarrod and the Parish Council have agreed to help us improve upon the professional appearance of the Saint Nicholas Dancers by approving the purchase of costumes, which will remain the property of the church and be handed down to the younger children as they rise up through the ranks. With the input of many dancers and parishioners, these final 3 costumes were selected, from the website which is located in Kastoria, Greece. Please let me know if your child will participate, as we must get measurements, submit and pay for the order by March 31, 2017 to ensure that we have the costumes in time for the Festival. The cost estimate includes pricing for all costume and accessories for each dancer and shoes (tsarouhia) for the boys only. Females in the older group must purchase their own character shoes which cost approximately $25 per pair. You can sponsor a costume or costumes! All sponsorships and donations would be greatly appreciated. We are very excited for the 2017 Yassou Festival this year we plan to introduce some new dances that we learned in Syracuse, and with our new costumes, we know you will be pleasantly surprised with our improved performances!
