1 ALL SAINTS ANGLICAN CHURCH Pastor: Jim Halmarson Deacon: Suzanne McMillan Deacon: Alan Wotherspoon Organist and Choir Director: Syd Birrell REMEMBRANCE DAY Sunday November 11, :30 AM 235 Rubidge Street Peterborough, Ontario K9J 3N

2 Prelude Presider: Please stand THE STORY OF REMEMBRANCE Across Canada, and in many other countries, people gather on November 11 to honour the courage and devotion of brave men and women who made the supreme sacrifice of dying for their country. The hostilities of the First World War ceased on November 11, 1918, at 11:00 a.m.; the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. The following year marked the first observance of a day to remember and honour those who died; as well as to give thanks for the sacrifices of those who came back from serving their country. Since then, Canadians have fought in other conflicts and many have given their lives so that we might enjoy freedom today. We will pause our service at 11:00 a.m. and ring our church bells as part of our remembrance. PROCESSIONAL HYMN 576 (omit v. 3) For the Healing of the Nations THE ROYAL ANTHEM God save our gracious Queen, long live our noble Queen, God save the Queen: Send her victorious, happy and glorious, long to reign over us: God save the Queen. THE GREETING Officiant: All: Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Officiant:Dearly beloved brethren, the Scripture moveth us in sundry places to acknowledge and confess our manifold sins and wickedness; and that we should not dissemble nor cloke them before the face of Almighty God our heavenly Father; but confess them with an humble, lowly, penitent, and obedient heart; to the end that we may obtain forgiveness of the same, by his infinite goodness and mercy. And although we ought at all times humbly to acknowledge our sins before God; 2

3 yet ought we most chiefly so to do, when we assemble and meet together to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his most holy Word, and to ask those things which are requisite and necessary, as well for the body as the soul. Wherefore I pray and beseech you, as many as are here present, to accompany me with a pure heart and humble voice unto the throne of the heavenly grace. ~Please assume a position of prayer~ Officiant:ALMIGHTY and most merciful Father, All: We have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep, We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts, We have offended against thy holy laws, We have left undone those things which we ought to have done, And we have done those things which we ought not to have done; And there is no health in us. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare thou them, O God, which confess their faults. Restore thou them that are penitent; According to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesu our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, That we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, To the glory of thy holy Name. Amen. ABSOLUTION Officiant:Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who desireth not the death of sinners, but rather that they may turn from their wickedness, and live, hath given power and commandment to his Ministers, to declare and pronounce to his people, being penitent, the Absolution and Remission of their sins. He pardoneth and absolveth all them that truly repent and unfeignedly believe his holy Gospel. Wherefore we beseech him to grant us true repentance and his Holy Spirit, that those things may please him which we do at this present, and that the rest of our life hereafter may be pure and holy; so that at the last we may come to his eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen ~Please Stand~ LITURGY OF REMEMBRANCE (Laying of the Wreaths) Officiant: This is the will of him that sent me that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, All: and I will raise them up at the last day. THE LAST POST played by Medda Burnett 3

We will be marking this occasion with a special presentation from some students from Adam Scott CVI, who for the past few years have been conducting research on soldiers from the Peterborough and surrounding area. As a result, a web page has been created. This page contains names, biographies and images relating to 63 local soldiers. The web page can be reached at In particular, we will hear from two of these students who were responsible for researching information on three young men who belonged to All Saints' Anglican Church-Leonard Blake and brothers, Stanley and Benjamin Rippingale. Choir: Flanders Fields Alexander Tilley In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks still bravely singing fly Scare heard amid the guns below. We are the dead: Short days ago, We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved: and now we lie In Flanders fields! Take up our quarrel with the foe To you, from failing hands, we throw The torch: be yours to hold it high If ye break faith with us who die, We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields words by Lt. Colonel John McCrae THE COLLECT Officiant: Let us pray; Almighty and eternal God, All: from whose love in Christ we cannot be parted, either by death or life: hear our prayers and thanksgivings for all whom we remember this day; fulfil 5

Rest forever more. ~Please stand~ The Blessing Officiant: The peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord: And may the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be amongst you and remain with you always. 6

7 All: Amen. RECESSIONAL HYMN 528 O God Our Help in Ages Past THE NATIONAL ANTHEM O Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love in all thy sons command. With glowing hearts we see thee rise, The True North strong and free! From far and wide, O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. God keep our land glorious and free! O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. THE DISMISSAL Officiant: May God give to you and to all those whom you love his comfort and his peace, his light and his joy, in this world and the next; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. All: Amen. Deacon: Neither death nor life can separate us from the love of God in Jesus Christ our Lord. Go in the peace of Christ. All: Thanks be to God. May they rest in peace and rise in Glory. POSTLUDE St. Anne Fugue J. S. Bach A note from Syd: Bach s St Anne fugue is built on the tune to our last hymn today, O God Our Help In Ages Past. A second and then a third fugue follows, always combining sooner or later with the St Anne theme, leading many to the conclusion that Bach is honouring the Trinity, three in one and one in three. Perhaps you can hear the rushing wind of the Holy Spirit in the second movement. The third movement combines all three themes. And it is hard not to agree that the final entry of the fugue subject is the grandest ending to any fugue in music. FLOWERS IN THE CHURCH today are given to the Glory of God and in loving memory of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Additional funds have been provided by the All Saints Heritage Trust. The benches will provide accessible & durable resting spots for people in the community. They also celebrate the partnership between All Saints and our neighbourhood and recognize the efforts of the community members who initiated the project.
