4 Seeing the Invisible People One thing I do know is that though I was blind, now I see. H. G. Wells made The Invisible Man a fictional character, but there are real life counterparts. While staying at a hotel, I noticed the earnest efforts of the woman charged with keeping the free breakfast buffet stocked. Struck by her service, I walked over and offered her a tip while saying, Thanks for your work. Her stunned, grateful look made it clear that she was accustomed to operating as an invisible woman. Most are not born blind like the man in the gospel, but we soon develop selective sight. Perhaps we overlook an underachieving child or take a quiet worker for granted or look past a homeless veteran. Jesus has the eyes to see people that others do not notice, like the widow putting pennies in the poor box or Zacchaeus perched in a tree. In the film, Avatar, the most personal affirmation is declaring to another, I see you! Jesus cures the blindness that looks past others and opens our eyes to see the dignity and worth of every person. OUR CATHOLIC FAITH: Why Do We Make the Sign of the Cross? When we enter a church, we dip our finger into holy water and make the sign of the cross. The holy water is a symbol of our baptism, and in the sign of the cross, we profess the deepest mysteries of the Christian Faith: the Trinity-- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit--and the saving work of Jesus on the Cross. The combination of the words and the action are a creed--a statement of belief. Because we make the sign of the cross so often, we may be tempted to rush through it, to say the words without listening to them, or to ignore the symbolism of tracing the shape of the cross on our bodies. A creed is not simply a statement of belief--it is a vow to defend that belief. And He said to all, If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me. Luke 9:23 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA DISPLAY New CDs and books are here to accompany you on your Lenten journey and throughout this Year of Mercy. Be inspired and grow in your faith, and then pass the CDs and books on to others a great way to participate in the New Evangelization and share your faith. We appreciate your donations which help us to continue offering new titles! A little bit of mercy makes the world less cold and more just. Pope Francis CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES Second Collection This Weekend Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me (Mt 25:40). Today, we are reminded that Jesus identified himself with our poorest brothers and sisters. The Catholic Relief Services Collection serves Jesus in the victims of human trafficking, those who suffer from unjust laws, and those who need pastoral care and humanitarian assistance across the globe. Through supporting today s collection, you help Jesus in disguise. Please be generous. FOLLOWING JESUS TO EASTER, according to Mark, Matthew, Luke, and John A Lenten series offered by Fr. Richard Berube, SSE Lent offers us a special time to reflect on Jesus words to his disciples, Take up your cross and follow me. There will be five sessions: four talks with discussion and a fifth session in the form of a holy hour and guided meditation. This series will be held on March 9th from 7pm 8pm, in the Hoehl Room on the lower level of Holy Family St. Lawrence Parish Center.
