2 COMMEMORATING WWI, EU BISHOPS PRAY FOR PEACE IN YPRES: On the occasion of the centenary of the end of World War I, bishops from the European Conference of Bishops (COMECE) urged all persons of good will to work together in the promotion of dialogue a key element for the European Union as a project of peace by preserving the diversity of historical memories in Europe. Their call comes from the symbolic setting of Ypres, theatre of some of the darkest and most cruel pages of the conflict. Bishop Nicholas Hudson, Auxiliary Bishop in Westminster said: "I feel deeply moved to be with you in Tyne Cot because my grandfather, Eric Hudson, fought here in the Battle of Passchendaele and survived. We gather here in a spirit of what the ancient Romans called pietas. Pietas, for the Romans, meant gratitude, loyalty, respect. We gather indeed in gratitude, loyalty and respect for all those here who laid down their lives in order that we might be free. We pray that they may now rest in peace; we pray for peace across the whole Continent of Europe. When we gathered, many of us, for the Re-thinking Europe conference in the Vatican, the Holy Father urged all of us to keep the human at the centre, at the heart of the European project. Tyne Cot is a place where we cannot but think of the human. For around us lie the remains of 12,000 men. The inscriptions chosen by their families to adorn the headstones are deeply poignant. Greater love has no man than to lay down his life for his friends ; Well done, dear husband and father, your noble duty done. This is a place where we remember the cost of war for both family and soldier alike. We remember what it is to be human; remember the sacrifice made by these men for their fellow human beings. It is a place we should resolve never to forget; from the rising of the sun to its setting, always to remember them." This Sunday of 11 November 2018 marks the last of the six Masses celebrated in our country to mark the centenary of World War I: 4 August Centenary of entry of the British Empire into WWI; 25 April Start of Gallipoli Campaign; 31 May/1 June Battle of Jutland commemorating the war at sea; 1 July Battle of the Somme; 31 July Start of the Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele). Catholic parishes are asked to mark these important anniversaries on the nearest Sunday by offering Mass for all those who died and to pray in the intercessions for those currently serving in the armed forces, and for peace.

3 YOUTH GATHERING: Young people aged are invited to come to our Diocesan Youth Gathering on Saturday 24th November at St Brendan s College, Broomhill Road, Bristol. BS45RQ. The day begins at 11am and finishes at 4pm. There will be a celebration of St Oscar Romero & the Synod, great speakers, music and activities, including the launch of our new Diocesan Youth Forum. The day will finish with Mass & commissioning of young people. Under 18 s must have a parental consent form, available to download from Refreshments are provided, please bring a packed lunch. To book your parish group or individual place, youth@cliftondiocese.com There will also be information given on how young people may participate in the National Youth Gathering Flame 2019 which will take place at Wembley Arena in Spring PRAY FOR ASIA BIBI AND PERSECUTED CHRISTIANS!: When Asia Bibi defended herself for drinking out of a cup on a hot summer s day back in June 2009, little did she know the price she and her family would pay for her courage in defending her Catholic faith a suffering that continues to this day. The fateful drink of water that Asia took came in a break during a heavy working day picking berries, close to her home in Sheikhupura in the Punjab province. Asia s fellow-workers were furious with her for using a cup that they too used. They made accusations against her and stated that, as a Christian, she had defiled the vessel by drinking out of it. When Asia spoke up for her Christian faith, the response of her co-workers was to accuse her of blasphemy. She was arrested and in November 2010 sentenced to death. In July 2015 the Supreme Court of Pakistan suspended her death sentence pending an appeal. That same Court revoked the sentence two weeks ago, but the Administration then placed an Exit Control Order on her, preventing her from leaving the country, and placing her at the mercy of mobs who have declared their intent to take the law into their own hands and put Asia to death. At the time of writing, it was claimed that Asia Bibi had been released from prison under tight security. It is uncertain whether she has been able to leave Pakistan. Aid to the Church in Need have produced prayer cards to support her and other persecuted Christians in Pakistan and elsewhere. 5 MARIAN HALL BUILDING FUND WELL UNDER WAY!: Father Jean-Patrice writes: Following on from the successful events organised by our parishioners from South Petherton, we had the first major event at Yeovil which was the Bollywood Night (more photos on the Parish Facebook Page) organised by the Keralan Community together with their friends from the Somerset Malayalee Community Association (SMCA), which raised a fantastic 1,510.50, and was a truly wonderful evening appreciated by all. THANK YOU! Our first Monthly Collection for the MHBF raised , of which was gift-aided. Thank you for this very good start! SHOE BOX APPEAL 2018: Please bring your completed shoeboxes to help children in Romania for Christmas by the evening of Thursday 21 Any boxes brought in after date this cannot be collected. Leaflets are available at the back of both churches to help you know what to put in the boxes. GO WITH GREATER STRENGTH: This is a gathering called by the National Service Committee of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal in England and Wales.
