2 EMERGENCY SPECIAL COLLECTION THIS SUNDAY: is for the Cyclone Idai Appeal administered by the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD).Your donation will give food, clean water and healthcare to people in desperate need. Gabriel, their expert working with the Church in Mozambique at this time, tells us: We know that Idai has wiped out crops and livestock, damaged water supplies and wrecked sanitation facilities, leaving vulnerable families even more exposed. With the support and generosity of the Catholic community, we can reach the people who really need urgent emergency aid. SECOND COLLECTION NEXT SUNDAY: will be for Aid to the Church in Need which is a Pontifical Foundation of the Catholic Church, supporting the Catholic faithful and other Christians where they are persecuted, oppressed or in pastoral need. During Lent, they are offering Readings and Reflections for each of the Sundays, speaking about one project they are helping. The Reflection for this Sunday is printed elsewhere in the Bulletin. Other Reflections as well as more information about their work can be found at their website Copies of their newsletter can be found at the back of both churches, as well as donation envelopes, which are you particularly encouraged to use for Gift Aid if you are a taxpayer. FILIPINO CULTURAL EVENING: Rose Stephenson writes: 'On behalf of the Filipino community I'm very pleased to say we raised 2, on the night. We are all very grateful for all the love and support that our friends, families, work colleagues, parishioners and to those who were unable to attend but bought entrance tickets and raffle tickets, have shown to us.. Thank you so much.' MARY S MEALS: Ann White writes: Thank you so much for your donation of almost 720 to Mary s Meals. As you have heard on the news, devastating floods have affected areas where Mary s Meals works in Malawi. As a result, an emergency feeding programme is taking place for over 17,000 people of all ages, on top of the normal school feeding programme. This is only possible because of the support given to Mary s Meals. Please, please, remember the little money boxes, fill them with love, and hand them in the week after Easter. Your generosity will make an immediate difference to a child s life. Isn t that so good to know? Thank you again. CHRISTIAN AID LENT LUNCH AT SOUTH PETHERTON: The final Lent Lunch will be held at the Methodist Hall at 12.30pm on: Wednesday 3rd April (W.I.).

3 A FUTURE FULL OF HOPE - The Year of Prayer: FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT The parable of the Prodigal Son is so well-known to us that it would be easy for us believe that we don t need to listen because we ve heard it so many times before! We know it! But do we? There is a beautiful and profound message of the immense, limitless love of God in this story. A love which God wishes each one of us to experience. As we listen to this Gospel Jesus wants us to know that whatever mistakes we may have made in life, we are not beyond redemption. We are worth far more than the worst thing we have ever done in life. God is waiting for us to come home. God s love has no limits. God does not have favourites or a list of exclusions as to who is entitled to that love. As we move through Lent, let us have the confidence to turn to God in his loving mercy and allow his tender embrace to heal us and restore us to a newness of life and love. LENTEN DEVOTIONS: Please remember the extra Masses on Wednesday morning at 6.30am and Thursday evening at 6.30pm, and the times of Adoration on early Wednesday morning, Thursday evening and Friday afternoon. 4 AID TO THE CHURCH IN NEED - REFLECTION FOR THE FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT: Sister Luma Khudher an Iraqi Dominican sister of St Catherine of Siena has first-hand experience of persecution when she was forced to flee Qaraqosh in Iraq s Nineveh Plains, after extremists seized the Christian majority town in the summer of With the rest of her community, she sought sanctuary in the Kurdish capital Erbil, where the Chaldean Catholic Church looked after around 10,000 Christian families. Sadly, 12 elderly Dominican Sisters died in the weeks after they arrived in Erbil. Sister Luma lived as an Internally Displaced Person (IDP) there for more than two years. Her order helped with the pastoral care of displaced families and educating IDP children in Erbil and Dohuk. Aid to the Church in Need helped the Chaldean Church s emergency aid programme and financed the building of eight schools for the Christian families. The Church was concerned that if education was not provided, then the displaced children would be further disadvantaged after the crisis was finally over. WEEK 4 - IRAQ PRAYER INTENTIONS: Sr Luma and the Dominicans All Religious Sisters Displaced Christians It is only through shadows that one comes to know the light. St Catherine of Siena "When the poor one called out, the Lord heard, and from all his distress he saved him (Psalm 33) After the Nineveh Plains were liberated in late 2016, her community were among the first to return to repair their destroyed convents in Qaraqosh. The Sisters continue in their role as teachers including catechesis to returning Christians as well as opening kindergartens and a school. The Sisters faith and the returning Iraqi Christian families resilience provide a message of hope after years of hardship. This Lenten Sunday s responsorial psalm reminds us that despite the suffering in the Middle East and elsewhere that the Church worldwide is called to taste and see that the Lord is good (Psalm 33). ACN benefactors responded to the urgent need of thousands of displaced or refugee Christians and others in need with prayers and by helping with their practical daily needs in Iraq. This Sunday s psalm presents the Christian challenge to follow Christ s example by helping others: When the poor one called out, the Lord heard, and from all his distress he saved him (Psalm 33)..

5 The charity is also supporting the rebuilding of a number of Christian villages overseen by the Nineveh Reconstruction Committee (NRC), an ecumenical organisation of the Chaldean, Syriac Orthodox and Syriac Catholic Churches. As of November 2018, the NRC has restored 5,746 houses. This year, the charity is funding the continued restoration of the Sisters Immaculate Mary Convent and the reconstruction of a further 1,500 houses in Qaraqosh as well as 500 houses in the villages of Bashiqua, Bahzani and Bartella. A Prayer for the Church in Nineveh Plains from NRC s website states: Lord and God, Hear today the cry of your children, now scattered to the four winds and forced to seek shelter in foreign lands Grant your people now the grace of returning to those places where the tree of their life is deeply rooted. Grant that this tree may bear fruits of peace and enable your people to restore the honour of your Name in those places you gave to them and to their ancestors, and preserve this land for future generations also, so that the praise of your Name may never cease in their churches and in their families. We ask you this, O God, lover of mankind, through the intercession of Mary, the Blessed Mother of God, of the martyrs of the Nineveh Plains and of all who have borne witness to you by their blood. Amen. We remember in our prayers: The Parishes of St Dominic, Dursley and St Joseph, Nympsfield. The Holy Father s Prayer Intentions for April: Doctors and their Collaborators in War Zones: For doctors and their humanitarian collaborators in war zones, who risk their lives to save the lives of others. For all Christians persecuted for their faith. For candidates receiving the Sacraments at Easter. For the people affected across Southern Africa by Cyclone Idai.
