2 ABOUT LANGRI TANGPA CENTRE Langri Tangpa Centre is a teaching and meditation centre in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. We provide a friendly and supportive environment for learning and putting into practice the teachings of the Buddha. We are open to everyone with an interest in making their life happy and meaningful. There is no need to be a Buddhist to benefit from the courses on offer, and we encourage questioning and open dialogue. Langri Tangpa Centre is a non-profit organisation, founded in 1982, and run entirely by volunteers. We are affiliated with the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT), an organisation of over 140 centres throughout the world, founded by Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche. We seek to reflect their teachings throughout our extensive program, and to support our principal inspiration, HH the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet. LTC is incorporated in Queensland under the Associations Incorporation Act 1981 (QLD). We operate an ATO endorsed School Building Fund with Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status and are sanctioned as a community purpose organisation under the Collections Act 1966 (QLD). ABN OPENING HOURS Reception, shop, library and meditation hall are open before and after class. As the centre is run by volunteers, sometimes the reception closes whilst class is on. How Buddhism Helps Tuesday evenings 21 November 5 December Explore essential aspects of Tibetan Buddhism that guide our inner journey of both personal liberation and global harmony. Topics include how to stay true to what really matters in life, how to avoid distraction, and how to develop a natural sense of kindness. 4-weeks with registered FPMT teacher Miffi Maxmillion. Classes are sequential but you can join at any time. By donation (suggested $10 but there is no set amount). No need to book, just come along. Notes for the course are $15 Starting Point Saturday 2 December (2 pm 3.30 pm) Come along to our beginner's welcome and orientation, and enjoy a guided tour, short meditation, and an information session about the program and the centre. Discover which elements of our program will suit you, and share delicious chai tea afterwards. First Saturday of the month! Everyone is welcome! This event is freely offered. No need to book, just come along. Participants receive a welcome pack and free book to take home. 2
4 YOGA Morning Yoga Classes Mondays with Jill Shaw-Feather Wednesdays with Cindy Hartigan Fridays with Jill Shaw-Feather (9.30 am 11 am) Yoga for all levels and age groups, including seniors and beginners. Relaxation, personal instruction and mindful movement helps you unwind from workday stress, let go of tension and feel revitalised. A flowing style that allows you to work to your own capacity. Develop strength and flexibility by working to your own capacity, and as deeply as you feel comfortable. Linked by the breath, this flowing blend of asana (postures) pranayama (breath work) relaxation and meditation helps you to become centred, relaxed and revitalized. Evening Yoga Classes Mondays with Amanda Lynn Wednesdays with Cindy Hartigan Vinyasa flow, Sun Salutations, stretching and strengthening for a deeply nourishing practice. Yoga helps calm the mind and leave you feeling both relaxed and invigorated. Suitable for all levels of experience, with variations to suit the individual. There is also the opportunity to explore more challenging poses in a safe and nurturing environment. About the yoga classes... There is no need to book, just come along! Beginners are welcome, as the classes are a mixed group. The room is climate controlled, and yoga mats, blankets and equipment are supplied. BYO water bottle, wear loose and comfortable clothes, and arrive at least 15 minutes early if this is your first class. Costs is $15 per class (cash only please). Enter through the doors at the street end, as reception may not be open. There are toilets and change-rooms for your convenience. **Final class for 2017 will be on 15 December. 3
5 EMOTIONAL BALANCE Becoming Your Best Self Thursday mornings 23 November 21 December (10.30 am 12 pm) Drawing on Buddhist psychology, we examine how to bring forth our innate good qualities, and overcome the distraction, anxiety and depression that hampers our life and happiness. If we can overcome our destructive emotions and habits, we will naturally become more peaceful, and our relationships with others will naturally become happier and more constructive. There is no need to be a Buddhist to attend these are universal application that can be used by anyone, regardless of belief! 5-weeks with registered FPMT teacher Miffi Maxmillion. Classes are sequential but you can join at any time. By donation (suggested $10 but no set amount). Notes are $15. COMMUNITY Tsa-tsa Painting Workshop Sunday 10 December (2 pm 4.30 pm) A relaxing afternoon spent painting the small flat-backed statues of the buddhas (tsatsas). This activity helps us to connect with and draw forth the enlightened qualities of the buddhas in our own mind. It also helps to calm the mind and develop concentration. You don t need any artistic skill to enjoy this contemplative activity! By donation (suggested $10, but no set amount). All materials supplied. Bookings appreciated. Miffi Maxmillion is the Spiritual Program Co-ordinator and teaches the beginner s courses. She has been at LTC since 1997, when she took over from her mother Inta Mckimm, who originally founded the centre in Miffi has a background in circus costumes and couture, and says she enjoys watching far too much TV to relax. 5
6 PUJAS & CEREMONIES Annual Refuge Ceremony Friday 1 December (7.30 pm 9.30 pm) Taking Refuge means taking the Buddha, his teachings (the Dharma), and the spiritual community (the Sangha) as one's primary guidance and protection, and keeping the Refuge vows and commitments. Geshe Tsultrim will bestow the ceremony in an unbroken lineage from the time of the Buddha. First-timers: You take the Refuge vow (commitments and lay precepts) and receive a booklet with a Refuge name. There will be an opportunity to offer a khata at the end of the ceremony. Prior study on refuge is recommended. Returners: This is an ideal opportunity to renew and strengthen your vows. Annual ceremony, everyone is welcome both those taking refuge as well as family members and friends. Bookings are essential for first-timers, as there are things we need to prepare for you! By donation (suggested $20). Geshe Phuntsok Tsultrim is the resident Geshe at our sister centre, Chenrezig Institute. He was born in Tibet and at age 14 was admitted to Sera Je monastery, where after twenty years studying the five textual systems, he completed his Geshe degree (equivalent to a doctorate in Buddhist studies). He taught Buddhist philosophy at TCV School, Bylakuppee for two years before returning to Sera Je. Geshe Tsultrim also spent some time teaching at Root Institute where he was immensely popular for the warm and approachable way in which he presented the Dharma. Ven. Lozang Drolkar became a nun in She has a degree in Applied Ethics, and currently attends the advanced study program at Chenrezig Institute as well as studying to become a Buddhist chaplain. She leads meditations, conducts baby naming ceremonies and has taught Buddhism in schools. She has a daughter, two grandsons, and loves to laugh! We close for the summer break Langri Tangpa Centre closes for private retreat from 25 December 26 January. We re-open on the Saturday 27 January. 3
7 LEARN TO MEDITATE Purification Meditations Thursday evenings 23 November 21 December Guided meditations to purify our negative actions, speech and emotions. These step-bystep practices help to overcome destructive habit patterns and remove the negative imprints made on our mind by past actions. From simple breathing and mindfulness to blissful visualisations, these meditations suit everyone, whether religious or not. 5-weeks with registered FPMT teacher Ven. Lozang Drolkar. Mindfulness Practice Afternoon Saturday 9 December (1 pm 4 pm) Be led through a range of mindfulness exercises and meditations to help you start, or deepen, your mindfulness practice. Each session includes gentle mindful movement, a relaxing body scan, breath meditations and mindful walking. Afternoon led by Ven. Lozang Drolkar. Guided Meditation, DVD & Chai Sunday mornings 3 17 December (10.30 am 12 pm) Spend a relaxed morning enjoying a guided mindfulness meditation followed by a visualisation of the Buddha. We also watch a documentary on a Buddhist topic, and end with a discussion, delicious chai tea and biscuits. On-going drop-in classes led by the LTC nuns. No need to book, just come along. 8 IN-DEPTH BUDDHISM Afflictions to Perfections Game Wednesday 20 December (7 pm 8.30 pm) An enjoyable way to integrate your Buddhist study and connect deeply with your fellow students. We share stories of our own experiences along the Dharma path. Playing this game produces as much laughter and merriment as it does thought and concentration! Open to all, but especially recommended for Discovering Buddhism students. Run as several small groups, with Miffi Maxmillion. By donation (suggested $10) Discovering Buddhism UNIT 2: How to Meditate Wednesday evenings 4 October 13 December (7 pm 8.30 pm) Learn the purpose of meditation, and the benefits from simple relaxation to taming the mind and ultimately becoming awake, or enlightened. Discover how to set up an effective and enjoyable daily meditation practice to bring ultimate benefit. 10-weeks with registered FPMT teacher Eddie Peet. Join at the beginning of any unit. By donation (suggested $10 but no set amount). Bound notes are $30. If you are unsure if this course will suit you, please feel welcome to sit in on a class. Lamrim Chenmo Study Group Sunday mornings 3 & 10 December (9 am 12 pm) In-depth study group exploring Lama Tsong Khapa's Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment. We listen to the commentary during class, discuss the homework, and discover how to integrate the lam-rim wisdom into daily life. Held twice a month, led by registered FPMT teacher, Eddie Peet. Suitable for established students or the committed beginner. (Suggested donation $10) Notes printed or on CD. 7
9 IN-DEPTH BUDDHISM Twelve Links of Dependent Arising Tuesday mornings 28 November 19 December (10.30 am 12 pm) The Buddha's teaching on the Twelve Links encompasses life, the universe and everything! It depicts the Four Noble Truths, how karma and disturbing emotions keep us bound in cyclic existence, and how we can harness our natural potential to become completely liberated from cyclic existence. 4-weeks with registered FPMT teacher Eddie Peet. This is a supplementary course for Discovering Buddhism. By donation (suggested $10 but no set amount). Notes are $15. Eddie Peet is a registered teacher within the FPMT and has been leading the intermediate classes at LTC since His gentle manner and in-depth knowledge of the Buddhist path make him an invaluable resource. He is widely read, and is known for his non-judgmental compassion for anyone wishing to apply the teachings into their life. 10 PUJAS & CEREMONIES Medicine Buddha Puja Sunday 3 December Prayers and offerings to the seven healing Buddhas. This practice helps to remove obstacles, dissolve the root cause of problems, and connect with universal healing energy. Bring your medicines to put on the altar and be blessed. Monthly offering ceremony, and ideal first-time puja as it is in English! No need to be a Buddhist to attend. By donation (suggested $10, or bring an offering of flowers or food) Annual Nyung-Ne Retreat on Compassion Buddha Wednesday 27 Dec Monday 1 Jan (Residential retreat) A challenging yet rewarding retreat on Chenrezig the compassion buddha. This purification method involves keeping physical discipline, meditation and prostrations, and silence and fasting on alternate days. It is especially useful for people whose schedules cannot accommodate long-term retreat. Doing even one Nyung-Ne or abiding in retreat for just two days is said to be as effective as three months of other purification practices and is extremely powerful for healing illness, purifying negative karma, and opening the heart to compassion. Bookings are essential a week in advance, as numbers are limited and this event books out early! Cost is $180 and includes all meals and offerings. The retreat is residential and attendees must commit to all f our days, the introduction evening, and the celebratory breakfast. Newcomers are especially welcome, as we have regular tutorials, and returning Nyung-Ne retreatants to support and encourage you! Would you like to help sponsor a Nyung-Ne? By donation (suggested $10, or bring an offering of flowers or food) Lama Tsong Khapa Day Wisdom Meditations Tuesday 12 December Celebrate the extensive qualities of Lama Tsong Khapa with a practice to develop wisdom and clarity. We focus on the seven wisdoms that cut through the darkness of confusion and increase memory and understanding. We offer chai tea, make personal dedications, and rejoice in the amazing Lama Tsong Khapa Christmas Tree Tower! Annual event.
